Lesson 4: Types of Sentences
Lesson Plan Template

1. Lesson Title: Types of Sentences
2. Grade/Age Level: 7
3. Subject Area: Language Arts / Grammar
4. Time allotted for the lesson: two days (two 80 minute class periods)
5. Short description of lesson
In this lesson, students will review the four types of sentences: simple, compound,
complex, and compound-complex. By the close of the lesson students will be able to
identify sentence types by closely examining the make-up of each sentence. The lesson
is designed so that students can move at their own pace, as this is a review of grammar
concepts previously covered in the course. Students will also complete and submit two
assignments designed to provide practice on sentence examination to determine the
sentence type. Students will complete the fourth and final step in the Four Level
Analysis example at the end of the lesson.
6. State Curriculum Standards met in this lesson:
2.1. Acquire Strategies and Skills for Comprehending Text
7.LA.2.2.4. The student will be able to follow multi-step written directions.
3.2. Acquire Skills for Writing a Draft
7.LA.3.3.4. The student will be able to apply a variety of sentence structures to improve
sentence fluency and enhance writing style.
5.4. Acquire Skills for Using Conventions
7.LA.5.4.2. The student will be able to use commas, including in appositives. Use
parentheses and semicolon in writing. (735.02.a)
5.3. Acquire Skills for Sentence Structure
7.LA.5.3.2. The student will be able to use correctly future verb tenses, adjectives,
personal pronouns, conjunctions, and adverbs. (735.02.a)
6.3. Acquire Viewing Skills
7.LA.6.3.2. The student will be able to demonstrate understanding of graphics, pictures,
and charts appropriate to grade level. (738.01.a; 738.01.b)
7.LA.6.3.5. The student will be able to apply technical skills to produce visuals that
communicate to the audience. (737.04.b)
7. Instructional Objectives:
a. Review the four different types of sentences
b. Examine sentences to determine their type
c. Practice examining sentences in order to determine their type
8. Instructional Procedures
a. Students will begin the Lesson by viewing the informational graphics
b. Students will review the notes for the types of sentences
c. Students will complete and submit the assignments for the types of sentences
d. Students will complete the fourth step of the Four Level analysis before moving
on to the next lesson
9. Adaptations for special learners:
Learners with special needs will be privy to audio notes, clarification on assignments,
additional time if needed, and/or online tutorials.
10. Supplemental Activities:
Online tutorials if needed, or instructional videos on TeacherTube.
11. Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be assessed informally in Lesson 4. Assessment data will come from the
assignment submissions. Students need to score a 70% average on the two assignments
in order to move on to the Lesson 5: Putting it All Together. Feedback will be provided
to students via correspondence from teacher to student and grade reports on our class
Moodle page.
12. Learner Products:
Students will submit two worksheet based assignments that allows them additional
practice on examining sentences to determine their type. Students will also complete
the fourth and final step of the Four Level Analysis.
