Benefit From Home Grown Fruit and Vegetables
1. Benefit From Home Grown Fruit and Vegetables
There are a number of reasons why you might want to start growing your own produce at home or
on an allotment, one of which is its ever growing cost.
Vegetable gardening is not as easy as just heading to the shops and buying them off the shelf,
however you can produce vegetables that are usually cheaper and invariably taste better.
First you must decide how much of your garden you wish to use for growing your produce and that
it has good drainage, air flow and deep soil. It also needs to be able to get as much sunlight as
possible. Failing that, you will be required to purchase containers of varying sizes which are
suitable for growing the desired vegetables or fruit.
Before planting, the soil must be properly prepared. Good soil for vegetable gardening is achieved
by cultivation and the application of organic materials. Organic matter added to the soil releases
nitrogen, minerals and other nutrients which plants need to thrive.
Mulching is a vital part of soil preparation. The most popular and best type of mulch you can use
is compost. While the kind and amount of fertilizer used depends on the soil and types of plants,
there are some plants that have specific needs; leafy plants, like cabbage, spinach, and lettuce
usually grow better with more nitrogen, while root crops like potatoes, turnips, and carrots require
more potash.
One thing that is vitally important in vegetable gardening is the garden arrangement. There is no
single plan that will work for every garden due to varying conditions. Consulting home garden
design books may assist you in this.
One popular way to arrange a vegetable garden is to plant vegetables needing only limited space
together, such as radishes, lettuce, beets, and spinach and those that require more room together,
such as corn and potatoes.
When you are finally ready to begin planting your vegetable garden, make sure you plant at the
right time of year. If you are dying to get an early start, you may want to begin your growing
indoors and then transplant when the weather permits. After you are finished planting, make sure
your vegetables receive the appropriate amount of water, which depends on the type of plant.
Most plants will need the equivalent of about an inch of water per week and somewhere between
2. 6 and 8 hours of sunlight per day and during periods of dryness they will benefit enormously from
some extra water.
It would also be useful if you purchased food and drink books based on produce growing so that
you can get all the growing advice and tips you need as and when you need it.
Vegetable gardening is many people’s favourite form of gardening because you can actually taste
the fruits of your labour. Vegetable gardening is not that expensive to start and the taste of home
grown veggies definitely beat that of supermarket vegetables. Your vegetable gardening days will
be full of produce if you take the proper precautions when planting and continue the maintenance
of your garden.
Remember also, watching out for pests as protection is needed in order for your vegetable garden
to yield a bountiful harvest. Hard work will pay dividends.
