2. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re here today to talk about a very contagious disease among your pets that may be due to
contact with infected dogs at a boarding facility or dog park.
3. The pets that are highest at risk are puppies and older dogs, since their immune systems are not at their best.
Cats are susceptible as well, but dogs are usually kept in the same areas for playtime.

4. Is your dog coughing?

5. Has your dog lost his or her appetite?

6. Has your dog come into close contact with
another dog?
7. Does your dog have a fever? If so, your dog may have
tracheobronchitis, or Bordatella.

8. Kennel cough is caused by Bordatella bronchiseptica, a zoonotic, gram-negative bacteria that is capable of
forming biofilms. The bacteria infects animals of all sizes, including household pets and farm animals. Dogs
are most commonly infected because they are very social and are often boarded or taken to dog parks,
where they come into contact with many other dogs.Vaccines exist, but some bacteria continue to survive
and proliferate in the animal.

9. To verify infection, blood samples must be taken and analyzed, viral isolation must be
performed, and bacterial cultures must be grown to identify the pathogen.

10. Most dogs recover from kennel cough without treatment, but there are antibiotics that target
Bordatella bronchiseptica and there are ways to soothe your dog’s throat. Use a harness as
opposed to a collar to minimize strain against the throat and give large dogs a tablespoon of
honey. Smaller dogs can be given a teaspoon instead.
