1. Tapeworms And Wolves OH MY!!
Leslie Sinclair, DVM says: Tapeworm larvae are carried by fleas, so dogs usually become infected
with tapeworms when they ingest a flea. If you take your pet abroad, it may be exposed to diseases
which we do not have in the UK, for example diseases transmitted by the bite of certain ticks, and
parasites such as heartworm and tapeworm. Depending on where you are going, your vet should be
able to advise you on preventative treatments, or any other precautions you need to take and how to
look for signs of ill health in your pet.
For example, dogs who eat raw meat may sometimes get infected with Echinococcus granulosus,
another type of tapeworm. Although the appearance of tapeworms is revolting, they are seldom a big
threat to our dog's health. If our dog is healthy and has a strong immune system, tapeworm
infestation is usually short-term and harmless. Freshly-ground pumpkin seeds can be fed to your dog
to treat tapeworm infestation. There are several methods of treatment for tapeworms.
A dog must bite or swallow an infected flea or louse to acquire the parasite. Several species of
Taenia, another type of tapeworm, parasitize dogs. These tapeworms are found in the northern
United States and Canada. Treatment: Droncit, Cestex, Drontal Plus, Telmintic, and Vercom Paste
are highly effective against all the common dog tapeworms. Prevention: The common dog tapeworm
can be controlled by eliminating fleas and lice from the environment.
The other tapeworm infecting cats is Taenia taeniaeformis , though this form is much less commonly
encountered that the one currently under discussion here. Sometimes these animals may be seen
rubbing their rear end on the floor and on examination of the stool, one may see small tapeworm
segments that resemble cucumber seeds. Tapeworms have neither a digestive tube,
nor circulatory or respiratory systems.
Tapeworms can be treated with medication from your veterinarian but unless you also get rid of the
fleas your dog has a high likelihood of becoming reinfected with tapeworms. They occur when the
dogs skin becomes further irritated by the excessive scratching. Left untreated these can develop
into crusty lesions which can lead to secondary infections. Adult flea feces appear as little specks of
dirt on your dogs skin.
