The Feelings Of Being Hooked Analysis
The Feeling of Being Hooked (Pages 97–120) I have gotten caught up in a book before. At first I
thought the book didn't look good so I looked at the back and was not interested. Unfortunately I
have to read the book for school. Everyone told me that they were not very interested in the book as
the previously read it. There were a couple of people who told me the book was really good though,
so I didn't know what to expect. Most of the people who are reading the book like me weren't really
excited but they were a little interested to read it. So I was a little eager to read it, but didn't know
what to expect. On the first day we started reading the book I thought to myself, "This actually isn't
that bad of a book." I couldn't believe how

How I Learned To Read The Book 'My Antonia'
I can not begin to describe how quickly this year has gone! Throughout it though I feel like have
gained a lot both academically and personally. I have learned to manage my time better since I also
took on a college class with my regular classes. This has been a struggle sometimes but it has
pushed me to become better. I know have a clearer picture of my future and where I will go after
high school thanks to some to the projects we have completed and I imagine this will only continue
during senior English.
Throughout my junior year of English, I gained and learned many new things. One thing that has
benefited me, even though I do not always enjoy doing it, is IXL. From this, I have gained and
practiced many skills. I was able to notice this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I like when you assign us so many pages per day and we can just read. I like this more than our
Literature books because theses are the full story and there is more time to develop a plot. Even
though in the beginning of My Antonia I was confused everything became clearer as I kept reading
and it was a good story. I feel that when we read actual books I benefit more from it.
When we read out of Literature books I am often confused and lost in the story. A big part of this is
because it is only a small amount of the actual book or story and I am not able to get a full grasp on
what is happening. I also am not a fan of doing worksheets in the class as I feel this is sometimes
just busy work. I would not mind doing more creative writing in this class as I enjoy that very much
opposed to reading from out Literature books.
Overall I have enjoyed junior English and have gained much. I understand that it is hard to meet the
expectations and wishes of every student and you have done a good job of selecting assignments
that a majority of the class would enjoy. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me this year and I
look forward to spending my senior year with you along to help guide

How To Read Mindless Books
I completely agree with this quote because how would someone have any advantage over those who
cannot read if all they do is read mindless books, or choose not to read at all. Sure, that person is
able to read, but they are not acquiring their full potential. People who do not choose to read, do not
challenge themselves to understand the world around them. Any able readers must try to challenge
their understanding, be open to new ideas, and even challenge those ideas. People must explore their
curiousness through exposure to great literature. It is displeasing to think that more people are
choosing to not even attempt to read complex books. It is displeasing to think that people are
reaching for tabloids at a grocery store while the nearby

My Love Of Reading
Reading is an essential part of life and is the cornerstone of learning. Without it, you wouldn't be
anything in life. Reading is one of the most valued commodities on earth. However, most people
don't value reading as much as others do. When I was younger, reading was something that I valued,
but the older I got the less I valued it. The library was the place that started my love for reading.
Being able to pick out of a wide variety books was what had me very excited. Rows upon rows of
books that I could choose from. Once I found the one I wanted, I took it home and read it to my
mom. Then, about a week later, my mom would take me back to the place filled with books I wanted
to read. Being such a young age, I could only read books out of the kids section. I loved reading
books like blues clues, elmo, and the little train that could, but I thought I was ready for the big boy
books. My mom would let me pick out a bigger book on occasion. But, I didn't actually know how
to read them so I pretended like I knew how. My mom would help me on words that I didn't
understand how to say. After awhile, I could almost read my mom full page of a book. If i'm being
honest, I would only get the books to look at the pictures. That started to change as I got into
kindergarten. Mrs. Fudge, my kindergarten teacher, was ecstatic about reading. She would always
read the class a book from the school library. The best part about the book was that the students got
to pick which book we

Reflection About Reading
According to a survey done by the Pew Research Center in 2016, "About a quarter of American
adults (26%) say they haven't read a book in whole or in part in the past year, whether in print,
electronic or audio form." I believe I form part of this demographic group because I don't like
reading books. I would say that my past experiences have made me into being a non reader.
Therefore, I will explain to you my process of how I learned to read and who influenced my success,
what were my favorite books back then and now, and how my past experiences have shaped me into
the reader I think I am.Thus, I believe that I am not a reader. I learned how to read in school with the
help of my parents and teacher. I was about seven years old and in the first grade when I was taught
how to read .Every morning my teacher would make us say and pronounce the sound of each letter
in the alphabet. After this she would make us put these skills into practice. For example, she would
make us read short stories as a group on a squared rug she had in her classroom. My teacher would
start off by reading the first page of the story and then she would popcorn a student to continue
reading. If a student was struggling with a word she would make he/she sound it out syllable by
syllable until reading it correctly. Furthermore, my parents would make me reread the short stories
read in class to them each day and they would buy me many books to read.Without everyones
dedication and passion I wouldn't have

Reflection About Reading
"You have to read 10 hours this week" said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs
were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I
however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my
mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs.
Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary
school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better
you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book
fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of
books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the
library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then
be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the
librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would
always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even
though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty's freshman college prep English class
reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and

How To Read The Book 'The Shining' By Stephen King
Recently during this last summer, I have determined to read the book "The Shining" by Stephen
King. The reason that I chose this book is that this book was meant to be a backup book for another
book, "Peregrine" by John Alec Baker. However, I was incapable of finishing that book because I
couldn't be engaged the premise of the book nor its intricate details of bird observation. On the other
hand, "The Shining" was more feasible to enter, as I was already familiar with the book. With that
said, "The Shining" was a pleasure to read. It has a simple organization as described in the
following: the beginning contains the exposition, the middle introduces the main setting, and the
ending concludes with the characters' departure. The flow and

How To Read The Book This Lullaby
¨This Lullaby¨ By Sarah Dessen is a good book, but not one of the best I´ve read. I would rate it 3.5
out of 5, it is slow and not a lot of big or crazy things happen in the book that would knock you out
of your seat, you have to keep reading to find out what going to happen next. I would recommend
this book for teenagers who like romance and real life problems of high school girls, I picked this
book to read because the plot looked interesting and I like to read drama and romance books, they
are my favorite. ¨This Lullaby¨ has a lot of real life problems that could help you with your family,
friends and relationships, It is about a girl named Remy, who is eighteen–years old. Remy's mother

Dark Life Research Paper
The best book is one that makes you live the life of the character. I have only read a few books like
these. However, I hope to read many more throughout my lifetime.
One amazing way reading has changed is just my short lifetime is the digitalization of almost all
books. When I was very young I faintly recall going to Barnes and Nobles to actually buy a book,
now I get everything I read online. My inability for a long time to reread any book made my parents
find a cheaper way for me to read. When I was nine I got my first ever tablet, a Kindle Fire, this one
thing completely changed how I have read from then on. I never went to the library again to get a
book after I received this Kindle. I got all my reading materials from amazon and still do today. This
allowed me to read many more books faster and much cheaper than in the past. After about a year I

I reread the book "Dark Life" by Kat Falls, and it was much better than I expected. The book
focuses on a child named Ty that lives under the sea in the relative near future. The book follows
him through some of his many adventures, and his blossoming love life. One reason I chose to
reread this book was because it made me feel as if I was actually living Ty's life. I originally read
"Dark Life" about a two and a half years ago and I liked it then, yet I realized some of the subtle
jokes and themes passed over me. One major theme that I did not notice as much when I first read it
was how the romance progressed. It progressed in the cliche romantic novel way which led you to
realize that this author is not a romance writer. Another major theme that was more somber was how
corrupt the government is portrayed in the book. The government in the book very closely resembles
the one we have today. Rereading one of my first books turned out to be a much more enjoyable
experience than I expected it to

How I Learned How To Read A Book Analysis
I had so many events growing up as a kid but the most of it all would be learning how to read. Once
upon a time in my life, I had no idea about how to write let alone know how to read a book.
Personally, I was taught how to read by an uncle called Isaac. This uncle would always sit me down
at home to teach me how to read whether I felt like reading or not. You can call it "home education."
I remember vividly of how Uncle Ike as we the kids call him especially me would always buy story
books from town and would see to it that I read it but the best of it all is about taking you to a trip or
buying you some clothes if I was able to read it properly and with much fluidity of the words. At
first, I use to battle with myself when reading because I felt I was in a different world aside being in
my normal world all because of how difficult reading was to me. Uncle Ike would always beat me if
I read or pronounce a sentence or a word wrongly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pardon me if I don't mention the tittle of the story book because it's really been ages so I cannot
recollect the name of the book. He sat me down and handed the story book to me and demanded I

got a bit nervous and started to read aloud. I remember whiles reading I came across some words
like " the and their" and pronouncing those words was very tough for me but I remember my uncle
constantly taught me how to say it right. Since I was nervous, I had to try and learn it the hard way
since I didn't wanted to be beaten. Finally, I got use to the words of the book as time progressed and
started developing a little appetite for reading. In conclusion, I would say my experience on learning
how to read was full of cheer and

How Dramtically Affected My Reading Life
1. "If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all"(by
Oscar Wilde). Originally, I disliked reading, but soon did I realize that the only reason I despised
reading was because I kept reading the wrong type of books. By reading a wide selection of
different types of books this year, it really opened up my eyes. In other words, by reviewing
numerous amount of books, it has impacted me by making me realize that a book is just more then
thousands of words and hundreds of pages. But instead a story that has dramtically impacted me and
how i can look upon situations. That being said, by reading and viewing many different books, it has
changed my outlook on how I judge relating to reading and books. As previously stated by reading a
lot of books, it has impacted my reading life. What I mean by this is for as long as I could remember
reading was not for me because I would only read very few books and all would bore me to death.
However, the selection of books that I read this year impacted my reading life by making me way
more interested to read on and overall be way more greedy to read. For example, the book The Dead
and The Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer made me love reading, and also made me realize certain genres
that really interest me. Meaning, the genre of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sherman's father was an avid reader of westerns, spy thrillers, murder mysteries, gangster epics, and

that had a lot of actions and mysteries. These types of books can be found everywhere, Sherman
picked out these books that his father owned and he started to read them. He is giving an example
for the reader to that they don't need to buy books to read, just look of books that family member or
roommate had, and if you finish reading these books or didn't found one them you can buy new or

more books to his collection like the Kennedy assassination, Watergate, the Vietnam War, and the
entire 23–book series of the Apache westerns, these books are so long and complicated and
sometime had hidden meaning, and that is the third step that Sherman give to the reader. He also

How To Read A Book, By Mortimer Adler
Based on the course material, many attributes make up a good reader. Not only should good readers
avoid numerous distractions, like technology, but they should also be active readers. In a book
entitled, How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler lists many characteristics of good readers. On active
reading, Adler claims that "since any sort of reading is an activity, all reading to some degree must
be active. Completely passive reading is impossible; we cannot read with our eyes immobilized and
our minds asleep...the more active the reading the better" (5). Adler also uses the analogy of a
baseball to further illustrate his point. The author and his or her work acts like a pitcher and the
reader is the catcher–the author pitches information and the ... Show more content on

In a book entitled, Deep Work, author Cal Newport explores the idea of deep work versus shallow
work. He defines deep work as "professional activities performed in a state of distraction–free
concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limits" (Newport 3). On the other hand,
shallow work is "non–cognitively demanding, logistical–style tasks, often performed while
distracted" (Newport 6). In response to Adler's teachings, good readers should read "deeply" with
maximum effort and minimal distractions. However, in a later section of his book, Newport explains
that deep work is not something that comes easily. He explains that willpower and unbroken
concentration is not easily achieved or maintained: "Your will, in other words, is not a manifestation
of your character that you can deploy without limit; it's instead like a muscle that tires" (Newport
116). Like with any other muscle in the body, a person's ability to concentrate must be worked on
and strengthened. A good reader should learn his or her limitations and read actively when they can
work deeply. Trying to read actively while working shallowly is a waste of

Reading And Love: My Love For Reading
Everyone grows up learning how to read; nevertheless, not everyone grows up to love reading.
Fortunately, my love for reading only continued to grow as I grew older. It all began when my
parents and grandmother would read to my brother and I at bedtime, and expanding over time. Now
I read to my own children at bedtime, helping them find their own stories to love. Polar Bear, Polar
Bear, What Do You Hear, had become one of my favorite bedtime stories when my grandmother
would read it to my brother and I, when I was a toddler. She would put so much thought and action
behind her words that would make the story exciting. Moreover, it was the only story I would have

reading my junior year included, "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert and "The Truth About

Monday through Friday the first thing that our teacher said to us when we walked into the classroom
was, "Take out your books." Every Day in the beginning of the class we would read silently for ten
minutes. Every day I would be roaming through the bookshelves looking for that one book that
would be interesting to me. Then one day that changed. It was time for our second quarter book
report. I spent the first few days looking for the perfect book, but I couldn't find it. So I asked for
Mrs. Daugherty's help. She suggested a book and it ended up being a perfect fit. Once I found that
book I couldn't put it down. I was so excited that I had finally found a book that interested me. I
took it home every night and I finished it within a week. Once I finished it, I was anxious to find
another good book, and I did. Throughout the rest of freshman year I read the whole Divergent
series. I loved every single one of them. I would finish them within two weeks and start the next.
Towards the end of freshman year I started to see my ability to comprehend what I read get better. I
could read more quickly and I wouldn't have to read the passage over and over again to finally find

How To Read Like A Book
It's hard to remember most of the things that you or someone else did when you were little, but there
are some things you never forget. Most people love to read and find it relaxing, but I'd rather just
watch the movie about the book. For me, one of those memories is my mamaw always trying to read
a book to me as a kid when all I wanted to do was play with my dolls. When I was little, I remember
my mamaw reading to me at her and my papaw's big, stone house in Log Cabin. My mamaw always
wanted me to love books the way she did, but I never really took to them. I have never had the
patience to sit down and engage into a book without getting distracted by something else. But my
mamaw, she could read all day if she had the time.
When it came time for bed, I would hurry and go jump into the bed and wait on her to get ready to
come read to me. She would always read me this book called Wake up Lazy Bones right before I
dozed off into a deep sleep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some other books she would read to me were small, bible story books that came with more than one
book all together. Some of these were "Jonah and the Whale", "Moses", and "David and Goliath".
"Moses" has always been one of my favorite bible stories because it is a story about courage.
Moses's mother had to put her son in the river and hope that he would make it to the other side
without getting hurt. The bible has always been a big very big deal in our family. You could even say
that most of our family gatherings are centered on the bible.
As you can see, reading is not on the list of my favorite things to do. I have never enjoyed reading

myself having very much time to read. Reading is very time consuming and I like to do lots of fun

What Are The Reasons Why Banning Books Should Not Be Banned
There is never a time to ban books. Censoring books should never happen. People will miss out on
many books if any books is banned. Banning books should never happen because too many people
won't learn from them and books are meant to be read not banned.
Books are meant to be read not censored. If a book gets banned it is because poor thought has been
put into deciding. If people who are inexperienced are the people that decide what you read they
may not know how the book is. Reading a book helps us learn how many things work. We would
not be where we are today without books. Books were written to be read not outlawed.

How To Read A Picture Book
How to Read a Picture Book Finding the perfect picture book to share with the whole world is
tough. I searched the entire BYU–Idaho juvenile library to find one I liked more than any of the
others. I liked a great deal of them, but it took me a long time to finally find the one I thought
everybody should read. My pick for picture book to share with the world is The Whisper by Pamela
Zagarenski. This book doesn't completely blow me away. It's not my absolute hands–down favorite
picture book in the world. I'm not sure I have one of those, but I really, really like this one. And I
think there are several key elements that make it an important addition to anyone's library. The book
starts with a little girl talking to her teacher after school, right before she goes home. She notices a
book standing alone on a shelf up high, and her teacher lends it to her. As she rushes home with the
book in hand, the words fall out behind her. When she finishes her after–school routine and finally
sits down with the book, she's dismayed to find there are only pictures, and no words. Then she
hears a whisper tell her she can imagine the stories and use the pictures to tell them herself. She
slowly tries this idea out and pretty soon has imagined herself a whole world of characters ... Show

It's a little ironic that a picture book about a picture book not having words has to have so many
words to show it, but it is necessary to this story. However, once the girl starts imagining the stories
in her book, the words only take up a small part of the bottom of the page, and the illustrations span
across both open pages. So, if you're a parent or teacher reading to a child, you can ignore the words
and just show the illustrations and tell the story as you like. If you're an older child reading the book
by yourself, you can read it through once for the story, then continue reading it over and over again
making up your own stories just like the girl

Thirst for Facts When I was a child, it was already clear that my personality was remotely out of the
mundane. Clearly shown by my reading habits, I showed interest in things most children I knew

experience in his essay The Lonely, Good Company of Books. "In spite of my earnestness, I found
reading a pleasurable activity. I came to enjoy the lonely, good company of books." (Rodriguez
296). Richard Rodriguez found comfort in his reading and craved more and more novels. Reading

monumental impact on my love for literacy. She has shaped and molded the way I view Literacy and
how it fit into my life. There were three major moments in my childhood that I remember where the
books she had me read were extremely influential on my stance towards literacy.
Sometime before I started preschool my mother bought a book that had a colossal impact on literacy
in my life. I remember my mother coming into my room at bedtime to read me a new and exciting
book. The book had a pink background with a large coconut tree on it, also it had multi–color letters
all around the tree I will never forget this line; "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will there be enough at
the top of the coconut tree.". I did the same as Alexie did with his superman book, how he would
read it again and again; at bedtime every night for at least two months my mom would come into my
room and read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom"

Importance Of Reading
The Importance of Reading
Growing up throughout the years it goes from teachers reading books to your class to books getting
assigned to you to read independantly. Most of the books assigned would be so boring and pointless
to read. Normally when I got assigned a book I would just read through it trying to comprehend
some parts of it. I never tried to enjoy it or show an interest in the book. Reading to me was not
something I ever enjoyed doing. I did not like reading for pleasure and for class assignments
because I did not think there was a point. When I was reading independent books for pleasure, or an
assignment I would think to myself, "Why, why, why... do we need to do this." Reading to me
seemed like a waste of time, until my senior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Daniels explained to me I would be making a mistake, because the teacher for this course is
one of the best teachers at school. Later on Mr. Garland would win best teacher of the year for the
yearbook. So I decided to try the class out because it was a college class. I figured that's what I
needed going into college in the months to come.
Turns out my counselor, Mrs. Daniels was right. This class was exactly what I needed to increase
my vocabulary skills and start enjoying reading. Since the reading was a requirement for the class, I
told myself I needed to read the books to understand it and enjoy what I was reading. Mr. Garland
picked out the first book, and then let us pick from a series of books for the next five books to come.
The first book we read was called "The Bluest Eyes" by Toni Morrison. As most people know this
book is a classic, but at times can be confusing. We had to finish the whole book in two weeks. I
thought that task would be nearly impossible, but Mr. Garland made it seem possible by letting us
have time in class to read it. We also discussed in groups what was going on in the book to make it a
tad bit more understandable.Reading for the first time was fun instead of a chore. As the semester
went on, I never had to force myself to read any of the books that were assigned to us, but the last
few months sometimes were hard to find any motivation as a senior. Mr.

Black Lagoon Analysis
I never had a passion to read when I was younger in grade school. I never liked to read, unless it was
any of the "Black Lagoon" books then you had my full attention, and if it wasn't any of those I
would not read it for anything. All I wanted was to read those books, and I am pretty sure I read
almost all of them I liked them so much. I especially did not like reading when teachers would make
us read at night and fill out a reading chart to go along with it and would make our parents sign it so
they made sure that we really did read everyday. It was pure torture for me. I dreaded the reading.
My teachers even gave us prizes and treats for reading at home and I still did not want to read. One

library I went to get my second book, and then read that before anyone else finished their first book
of the year. Looking back to those books some of those are the best books I have ever read to this
day. Right after school I would rush as quickly as I could to the front office and laid on the ground
reading until my mom got off work, then reading on the bumpy car ride home, after dinner and right
before bed. Sometimes, when I was really close to finishing a book I would even stay up super late
to finish and use a flashlight as my light so my mom wouldn't see my bedroom light on and know I
was up past my bedtime, just so the first thing I said to my teacher the next day was that I finished
another book, and of course I said it loud enough so the whole class heard me. They were so
shocked that I read so much in so little time. I was on a roll and I didn't want to stop. I had read

Chapter Four Summary
In chapter four, Adler tells us about the second level of reading. The second level of reading is
Inspectional reading. Adler tells us that the definition of Inspectional reading is being able to read at
a true level. Adler affirms that you cannot read at an Inspectional level unless you can read at the
elementary level. Adler altercates that you must be able to read without having to look up the
meaning of words or stumbling over the grammar. Adler says, "You must be able to make sense of a
majority of the sentences and paragraphs, although not necessarily the best sense of all of them."(31)
Adler then proceeds to tell us that there are two types of Inspectional reading. Adler says that if you

Adler begins by telling us about reading in bed to help you fall asleep. Adler manifest that you must
find a difficult book to read or a boring book to help you fall asleep. Adler discusses how people use
to read with candlelight, along with how they stayed awake. Adler claims that to manage to stay
awake depends on the reader's goal of the book. Adler denotes that if you are reading a book to gain
knowledge from it, then you are more likely to stay awake and read the book. Adler declares four
basic questions a reader asks. The questions are, "What is the book about as a whole?"(46) "What is
being said in detail, and how? Is the book true, in whole or in part? And what of it?"(47) In the first
question, "What is the book about as a whole," Adler implies that you must discover the theme of
the book; how the author obtained this theme. In the second question, "What is being said in detail,
and how," The reader is to discover the main idea and arguments of the book. In the third question,
"Is the book true, in whole or in part," the reader must be able to know the answers to the other
questions in order to understand this one. In the fourth question, Adler indicates that you are to find
the connotation of the book. Adler declares two questions to ask to get the answer to the beginning
statement. The questions are, "Why does the author think is it important to know these things? Is it

What if the only stories in life today were only the events that truly happened before or during a

It is also about viewing things in perspective and seeing things differently. Fiction gives us new lens
and it opens up to how the character and narrator thinks. It also shows how events can unfold in the
real world rules and timeline. In one of the cites it said how it tells us how some events in the book
can led to real world rules and timeline. Also it says that it can tells us the way on how the character
and narrator think. This helps the students because it gives them multiple lens and it sometimes
connects to real world rules. Within that it can also challenge the reader to really think about it.
People reading fiction help them find new lens because they have to pay attention to the details in
the book to find the lens. Once they start to read fiction it's all about imagination and we have to get
the image in the book and adapt it to are heads so we know what we are talking about. This can help

Graduation Speech : My Childhood Essay
As a child, I never really liked to read, yet I use it everyday. I never had the urge to sit down and
read a book. I thought it as something that was just boring and trite. I do cherish reading now that I
realize. I should be happy that I know how to read because I had a chance of not knowing how to
read at all. Born in the Philippines and brought back to America, a loving family adopted me. All
readers have started somewhere not knowing how to read. My family was where my literacy journey
all began at. At a young age my parents read to me every night since I can remember. I loved
hearing my mom's graceful voice or when my dad made silly voices when reading. I loved when
they read to me, but it never crossed my mind that reading was something I loved to do by myself.
Reading just wasn't my forte. In my days in school, reading has been just a thing I had to do. It was
a requirement to know how to read in the school's curriculum. I was a child who played video
games, played with toys, or tinkered with something I was curious about. I was a child who didn't
really see reading as an important thing. My perspective on reading has really changed since I first
started read. First off, in all of my school years we always had a certain time of the day to read a
book. In elementary school, we had to "read". We had to get our books out that we check out from
the library and read them. I didn't always read during this time because I was always distracted by

The Amazing Things That Books Can Do Analysis
Amazing Things Paper At the beginning of the year I would read the book, The Amazing Things
That Books Can Do, By Ryan Joiner. This book would allow the class to have a great discussion
about what books can do for them. My class would discuss when the perfect time to read, where to
read, and who to read to. As a teacher I would point out that it is great to read when a student is
feeling down because books can brighten their day. Books can allow students to increase their
motivation, imagination, and determination. Books can develop students talent or help them find
theirs. I would clarify all the statements I have listed above with my students, after I read the book

book, my students would read them independently. Otherwise, I would read the book aloud and then
we would deliberate. For younger aged children I would only chose one book that fit the page and
would read it two or three times throughout the week. The first and second reading, the students
would answer comprehension question but on the third read we would speculate on why the
characters are making those choices. Also, we would analyze what would happen if the character did
something different. For older students, it would allow me, as a teacher, to be more flexible. If there

How Does Theodor Seuss Geisel's Books Help Children To Read?
Many people have grown up reading Dr. Seuss books as a child especially, Cat in the Hat, Green
Eggs and Ham, Oh, the Places You'll Go, and many more. However, as children it can be hard to
learn to read and write with many unknown words in books. Despite how hard it can be, author
Theodor Seuss Geisel has made it easier for children to learn to read. His books have made a lasting
impact on society and throughout the world. Dr. Seuss' imagination inspires others to let their minds
roam free. He made children believe in themselves; they were able to read his books and feel as if
they were in another world. "You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need
is a book" this encourages kids to read which can help expand their vocabulary (Seuss). Children
reading his books helps them with going through the basics of word transitioning into elementary.
Theodor Seuss Geisel's effective writing has assisted children read, be creative and become

How To Read Books Should Be Taught In Secondary Schools
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.", a truthful quote by the African–American social
reformer and writer, Fredrick Douglas said. Nowadays, many of our children have a negative
attitude towards reading in schools. They are forced to read literature they may not like. With the
increase of our children using the internet for video games, they have not had time to discover
literature they like. So schools should provide an opportunity for our children to discover literature
they will like. A designated reading time in all elementary and secondary schools must be mandatory
because it expands knowledge, stimulates creativity, and teaches life skills. First and foremost, a
designated reading time will expand knowledge. In Grade Four, ... Show more content on

I am a big fan of Stephen King's books, so I obviously read The Shining. When Jack, the protagonist
of the book, abandons his latest novel to write lines of "All work and no play makes Jack a dull
boy", these words showed me that all work and no play not only makes a person boring, but bored.
Although the context in The Shining had more of a psychotic edge to it, it still delivered a pertinent
message. The creepiness of this scene resonates in my mind, but I am constantly reminded to give
myself a healthy balance between school and recreation. Regular reading also sets up young
students for greater success later on in their school careers, and gets them on a good track for the
rest of their life. "The British Cohort Study" is a study which follows the lives of more than 17,000
people born in a single week in 1970, in England, Scotland, and Wales. Six thousand of these people
took cognitive tests again after first taking them in primary school, at the age of sixteen. Compared
to their peers who read less, they had higher test scores, and had greater intellectual progress in
vocabulary, spelling, and mathematics. Clearly, reading introduces people to new words and ideas.
This trains them to understand and absorb new concepts with ease. This study also suggests that
independent reading encourages a more self–sufficient approach to learning, encouraging regular

About three months went by and my sister had moved out. The whole bedtime story and trying to

that a person must read a book by following their own instincts and that the essay is her opinion,

The only real way to truly understand a story is to understand all aspects of a story and their

book, "How to Read Literature Like a Professor", Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients
of a story. He discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The
devices discussed in Foster's book can be found in most movies as well, including in Quentin

What Is My Favorite Movie Essay
This might be the hardest question for me to answer. What's my favorite movie? Like books, a
movie is another way to connect with fictional characters and it really is hard to choose your
favorite adventure. I would have to say I enjoy the movie White Chicks and any movie that I can
have a good cry and laugh on – it's hard to choose a favorite movie. Some musical artists that I love

To me, to be literate means that you are able to read and able to comprehend sentences. Also, when
you are able to read a book and envision the story unfold in your mind. To be able to read is to be
able to interpret a story into your own, what you think the author is telling you. I also believe that
you can read movies, music, and people etc. For example, a psychologist is able to read people's
expressions and emotions. A conductor or musician reads music and is able to interpret that into

What Does Liesel Symbolize In The Book Thief
An incredibly important aspect in the Book Thief are books. The books are used for the plot of the
book but also they were used as a symbol for many things including Liesel's ability to read and
write, Liesel's character, and Liesel's ability to use words during the story. The first aspect that books
symbolize in The Book Thief is Liesel's ability to read and write. Close to the beginning of the story,
Liesel found The Gravedigger's Handbook during her brother's funeral. The book reads, "On her
first night with the Hubermanns, she had hidden her last link to him– The Grave Digger's
Handbook–under her mattress, and occasionally she would pull it out and hold it." This is also a

Liesel stole a book for the first time before she knew how to read during her brother's funeral. In the
book, it reads, "When he walked away, after a few dozen paces, a black book fell innocuously from
his coat pocket without his knowledge." During this time, it was when the gravediggers were
digging the grave for her brother and then a book fell out of one of their pockets. Liesel would then
steal the book and kept it with her to remember her brother. Another time in the book that showed
Liesel's character was when she stole book during the burning of the books. It reads, "If you were
being flippant about it, you'd say that all it took was a little bit of fire, really, and some human
shouting to go with it. You'd say that was all Liesel Meminger needed to apprehend her second
stolen book, even if it smoked in her hands. Even if it lit her ribs." This is describing how Liesel
stole The Shoulder Shrug. She took the book out of the fire and held it against her chest and ribs.
This shows Liesel's character because it shows how she really is and likes to go against the system.
The meaning of the burnings were to burn books and anything made by a Jew. The book was
supposed to stay in the fire and burn because it was about a Jewish protagonist. Liesel's character

How To Read A Book Analysis
I believe everyone deserves to read a book. Throughout my life as a middle schooler, I understood
some of the meaningful definitions in a variety of books. From children to poetry to essays, each
written work has a personal purpose to it. I believe there are different lessons taught.
I believe responsibility is one of the lessons taught in some books. I remember the first few weeks
when I was in 8th grade. I would be in a hurry doing last minute assignments such as book reports
or essays because I was too busy being lazy or was at appointments, which I had several during that
time. I personally enjoyed writing when I was in that class, but I hated reading. When the whole
class began to read the Little Prince, I understood that the pilot wanted to stop talking to the little
prince in order to fix his plane in the beginning, but I did not understand the why part. My English
teacher explained that the pilot did not take a moment to be grateful of what is happening around
him. He just did not see it with his own eyes. It would make one help understand more about what
others think from their perspective. And yes, I got slightly more organized than how I was before.

The book I choose to read was Delusions of Gender: How Our Mind, Society, and Neurosexism
Create Difference by Cordelia Fine. There are three parts to the book: "Half–changed world", "Half–

it dealt with gender and how in society and our mind we create the differences that are used against
us. I thought that by reading it I would understand more from a psychologist's point of view how our
thought process creates what we perceive as reality, what has been placed upon gender specific
things by society, and how it has affected society.

Later in this section she critiques a study, which is widely cited, of the different ways babies' gaze. It
was a study was that was conducted when the infants were just a day and a half old. It showed that
the female babies were much more likely to gaze at faces, while baby boys preferred to look at a
mobile. When the study was analyzed scientists took the results as evidence of the fact that girls are
more empathic than boys, who are more analytic than girls. (Fine, 112,113,114) Fine does not
include any kind of research of her own but she uses this part of the book to point out the faultiness
of each of the researches who use this type of study to show the divergence between boys and girls.
She does, however, include information on how neurosexism is nothing new and how its roots are in
the mid–19th century when the motives behind the research were to restrict the access to higher
education and the rights for women to vote. (Fine,172) In the last part of the book, Recycling
Gender, Fine argues against the use of science as a justification of gender stereotypes and how that
can impact our future generations in a negative way. In chapter 19 Fine talks about how "Anyone
with ears can hear how adults constantly label gender with words: he, she, man, woman, boy, girl,
and so on. And we do this even when we don't have to." (Fine,210) This is how a child learns to sort
themselves into a gender category. Categories are already in place before the child

How Should Mark A Book?
"How to Mark a Book" by Mortimer Adler is an essay about how one should mark a book in order
to actively engage in the act of reading. The essay describes the benefits of writing in books and
how writing in books benefits the reader. Many interesting points are argued in this essay about why
one should mark a book; however, some of the points mentioned are not entirely true. Even though
marking in a book has proven to help a reader actively engage, that is not always the case. Adler's
essay is directed towards a specific reader, the scholarly reader, and ignores the multitude of reading

Adler used many metaphors in his essay to describe various points, such as owning a book.
According to Adler, until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, Adler pointed out that it is better to spend time with a book for thousands of hours, rather than
magazines for thousands of hours. Adler ended the essay by saying that one should never lend books
to their friends because they will be confused and also because one should never share their thoughts
on a book with someone else.
Adler ignores the reader who may be too poor to afford to buy books and needs to use a public
library. The people who go to the public library are not allowed to write in the books that they check
out. Adler, does address that if one cannot write in a book, then one should either write on a paper or
post–its. Adler does not go into details much about what people should do if they cannot write into
book too much, and only states: "You shouldn't mark up a book which isn't yours." Adler states that
if one does now own the book, then they should not mark in the book. Books that are given by
outside sources should not be marked on because the outside sources most likely expect one to
return the book to them in the same condition that it was given to the reader in. Adler compares
writing in a book given from an outside source to Paradise Lost. He writes, "I'd no more scribble
over a first edition of Paradise Lost than I'd give my baby a set of crayons and an original
Rembrandt!" (Wake Tech 32). Adler compares writing in a book that does not belong to the reader
with an original copy of Paradise Lost

The Feelings Of Being Hooked Analysis

  • 1. The Feelings Of Being Hooked Analysis The Feeling of Being Hooked (Pages 97–120) I have gotten caught up in a book before. At first I thought the book didn't look good so I looked at the back and was not interested. Unfortunately I have to read the book for school. Everyone told me that they were not very interested in the book as the previously read it. There were a couple of people who told me the book was really good though, so I didn't know what to expect. Most of the people who are reading the book like me weren't really excited but they were a little interested to read it. So I was a little eager to read it, but didn't know what to expect. On the first day we started reading the book I thought to myself, "This actually isn't that bad of a book." I couldn't believe how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. How I Learned To Read The Book 'My Antonia' I can not begin to describe how quickly this year has gone! Throughout it though I feel like have gained a lot both academically and personally. I have learned to manage my time better since I also took on a college class with my regular classes. This has been a struggle sometimes but it has pushed me to become better. I know have a clearer picture of my future and where I will go after high school thanks to some to the projects we have completed and I imagine this will only continue during senior English. Throughout my junior year of English, I gained and learned many new things. One thing that has benefited me, even though I do not always enjoy doing it, is IXL. From this, I have gained and practiced many skills. I was able to notice this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I like when you assign us so many pages per day and we can just read. I like this more than our Literature books because theses are the full story and there is more time to develop a plot. Even though in the beginning of My Antonia I was confused everything became clearer as I kept reading and it was a good story. I feel that when we read actual books I benefit more from it. When we read out of Literature books I am often confused and lost in the story. A big part of this is because it is only a small amount of the actual book or story and I am not able to get a full grasp on what is happening. I also am not a fan of doing worksheets in the class as I feel this is sometimes just busy work. I would not mind doing more creative writing in this class as I enjoy that very much opposed to reading from out Literature books. Overall I have enjoyed junior English and have gained much. I understand that it is hard to meet the expectations and wishes of every student and you have done a good job of selecting assignments that a majority of the class would enjoy. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me this year and I look forward to spending my senior year with you along to help guide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. How To Read Mindless Books I completely agree with this quote because how would someone have any advantage over those who cannot read if all they do is read mindless books, or choose not to read at all. Sure, that person is able to read, but they are not acquiring their full potential. People who do not choose to read, do not challenge themselves to understand the world around them. Any able readers must try to challenge their understanding, be open to new ideas, and even challenge those ideas. People must explore their curiousness through exposure to great literature. It is displeasing to think that more people are choosing to not even attempt to read complex books. It is displeasing to think that people are reaching for tabloids at a grocery store while the nearby ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. My Love Of Reading Reading is an essential part of life and is the cornerstone of learning. Without it, you wouldn't be anything in life. Reading is one of the most valued commodities on earth. However, most people don't value reading as much as others do. When I was younger, reading was something that I valued, but the older I got the less I valued it. The library was the place that started my love for reading. Being able to pick out of a wide variety books was what had me very excited. Rows upon rows of books that I could choose from. Once I found the one I wanted, I took it home and read it to my mom. Then, about a week later, my mom would take me back to the place filled with books I wanted to read. Being such a young age, I could only read books out of the kids section. I loved reading books like blues clues, elmo, and the little train that could, but I thought I was ready for the big boy books. My mom would let me pick out a bigger book on occasion. But, I didn't actually know how to read them so I pretended like I knew how. My mom would help me on words that I didn't understand how to say. After awhile, I could almost read my mom full page of a book. If i'm being honest, I would only get the books to look at the pictures. That started to change as I got into kindergarten. Mrs. Fudge, my kindergarten teacher, was ecstatic about reading. She would always read the class a book from the school library. The best part about the book was that the students got to pick which book we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Reflection About Reading According to a survey done by the Pew Research Center in 2016, "About a quarter of American adults (26%) say they haven't read a book in whole or in part in the past year, whether in print, electronic or audio form." I believe I form part of this demographic group because I don't like reading books. I would say that my past experiences have made me into being a non reader. Therefore, I will explain to you my process of how I learned to read and who influenced my success, what were my favorite books back then and now, and how my past experiences have shaped me into the reader I think I am.Thus, I believe that I am not a reader. I learned how to read in school with the help of my parents and teacher. I was about seven years old and in the first grade when I was taught how to read .Every morning my teacher would make us say and pronounce the sound of each letter in the alphabet. After this she would make us put these skills into practice. For example, she would make us read short stories as a group on a squared rug she had in her classroom. My teacher would start off by reading the first page of the story and then she would popcorn a student to continue reading. If a student was struggling with a word she would make he/she sound it out syllable by syllable until reading it correctly. Furthermore, my parents would make me reread the short stories read in class to them each day and they would buy me many books to read.Without everyones dedication and passion I wouldn't have ... • 11. Reflection About Reading "You have to read 10 hours this week" said my first grade teacher. In elementary school reading logs were what all the teachers made us do. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed too. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school reading never came easy too me. My mom would always say "The more you read, the better you'll be." but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. We would have book fairs in our school library and I would always ask my grandma to come and buy me a bunch of books, but in reality I never even read the books that she bought me. I would wonder around the library looking for the perfect book then once I thought I found one, I would read one chapter then be done with it. Most of the time the books would just sit in my room until I got a letter from the librarian saying that the book was past due. Then when I went to return a book, the librarian would always ask "How did you like the book?" and I would reply "It was great I really enjoyed it!", even though I had never even finished the book. In Mrs. Daugherty's freshman college prep English class reading was what the majority of the class consisted of. We were always reading passages and would have to answer questions about ... • 15. How To Read The Book 'The Shining' By Stephen King Recently during this last summer, I have determined to read the book "The Shining" by Stephen King. The reason that I chose this book is that this book was meant to be a backup book for another book, "Peregrine" by John Alec Baker. However, I was incapable of finishing that book because I couldn't be engaged the premise of the book nor its intricate details of bird observation. On the other hand, "The Shining" was more feasible to enter, as I was already familiar with the book. With that said, "The Shining" was a pleasure to read. It has a simple organization as described in the following: the beginning contains the exposition, the middle introduces the main setting, and the ending concludes with the characters' departure. I would rate it 3.5 out of 5, it is slow and not a lot of big or crazy things happen in the book that would knock you out of your seat, you have to keep reading to find out what going to happen next. I would recommend this book for teenagers who like romance and real life problems of high school girls, I picked this book to read because the plot looked interesting and I like to read drama and romance books, they are my favorite. ¨This Lullaby¨ has a lot of real life problems that could help you with your family, friends and relationships, It is about a girl named Remy, who is eighteen–years old. One amazing way reading has changed is just my short lifetime is the digitalization of almost all books. When I was very young I faintly recall going to Barnes and Nobles to actually buy a book, now I get everything I read online. My inability for a long time to reread any book made my parents find a cheaper way for me to read. When I was nine I got my first ever tablet, a Kindle Fire, this one thing completely changed how I have read from then on. I never went to the library again to get a book after I received this Kindle. I got all my reading materials from amazon and still do today. This allowed me to read many more books faster and much cheaper than in the past. After about a year I was restricted to the one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I reread the book "Dark Life" by Kat Falls, and it was much better than I expected. The book focuses on a child named Ty that lives under the sea in the relative near future. The book follows him through some of his many adventures, and his blossoming love life. One reason I chose to reread this book was because it made me feel as if I was actually living Ty's life. I originally read "Dark Life" about a two and a half years ago and I liked it then, yet I realized some of the subtle jokes and themes passed over me. One major theme that I did not notice as much when I first read it was how the romance progressed. It progressed in the cliche romantic novel way which led you to realize that this author is not a romance writer. Another major theme that was more somber was how corrupt the government is portrayed in the book. The government in the book very closely resembles the one we have today. • 21. How I Learned How To Read A Book Analysis I had so many events growing up as a kid but the most of it all would be learning how to read. Once upon a time in my life, I had no idea about how to write let alone know how to read a book. Personally, I was taught how to read by an uncle called Isaac. This uncle would always sit me down at home to teach me how to read whether I felt like reading or not. You can call it "home education." I remember vividly of how Uncle Ike as we the kids call him especially me would always buy story books from town and would see to it that I read it but the best of it all is about taking you to a trip or buying you some clothes if I was able to read it properly and with much fluidity of the words. At first, I use to battle with myself when reading because I felt I was in a different world aside being in my normal world all because of how difficult reading was to me. Uncle Ike would always beat me if I read or pronounce a sentence or a word wrongly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As young as I was, I got a bit nervous and started to read aloud. I remember whiles reading I came across some words like " the and their" and pronouncing those words was very tough for me but I remember my uncle constantly taught me how to say it right. Since I was nervous, I had to try and learn it the hard way since I didn't wanted to be beaten. Finally, I got use to the words of the book as time progressed and started developing a little appetite for reading. • 23. How Dramtically Affected My Reading Life 1. "If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all"(by Oscar Wilde). Originally, I disliked reading, but soon did I realize that the only reason I despised reading was because I kept reading the wrong type of books. By reading a wide selection of different types of books this year, it really opened up my eyes. In other words, by reviewing numerous amount of books, it has impacted me by making me realize that a book is just more then thousands of words and hundreds of pages. But instead a story that has dramtically impacted me and how i can look upon situations. That being said, by reading and viewing many different books, it has changed my outlook on how I judge relating to reading and books. As previously stated by reading a lot of books, it has impacted my reading life. What I mean by this is for as long as I could remember reading was not for me because I would only read very few books and all would bore me to death. However, the selection of books that I read this year impacted my reading life by making me way more interested to read on and overall be way more greedy to read. For example, the book The Dead and The Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer made me love reading, and also made me realize certain genres that really interest me. Meaning, the genre of the ... • 27. How To Read A Book, By Mortimer Adler Based on the course material, many attributes make up a good reader. Not only should good readers avoid numerous distractions, like technology, but they should also be active readers. In a book entitled, How to Read a Book, Mortimer Adler lists many characteristics of good readers. On active reading, Adler claims that "since any sort of reading is an activity, all reading to some degree must be active. Completely passive reading is impossible; we cannot read with our eyes immobilized and our minds asleep...the more active the reading the better" (5). Adler also uses the analogy of a baseball to further illustrate his point. The author and his or her work acts like a pitcher and the reader is the catcher–the author pitches information and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a book entitled, Deep Work, author Cal Newport explores the idea of deep work versus shallow work. He defines deep work as "professional activities performed in a state of distraction–free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limits" (Newport 3). On the other hand, shallow work is "non–cognitively demanding, logistical–style tasks, often performed while distracted" (Newport 6). In response to Adler's teachings, good readers should read "deeply" with maximum effort and minimal distractions. However, in a later section of his book, Newport explains that deep work is not something that comes easily. He explains that willpower and unbroken concentration is not easily achieved or maintained: "Your will, in other words, is not a manifestation of your character that you can deploy without limit; it's instead like a muscle that tires" (Newport 116). Like with any other muscle in the body, a person's ability to concentrate must be worked on and strengthened. A good reader should learn his or her limitations and read actively when they can work deeply. Trying to read actively while working shallowly is a waste of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Reading And Love: My Love For Reading Everyone grows up learning how to read; nevertheless, not everyone grows up to love reading. Fortunately, my love for reading only continued to grow as I grew older. It all began when my parents and grandmother would read to my brother and I at bedtime, and expanding over time. Now I read to my own children at bedtime, helping them find their own stories to love. Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear, had become one of my favorite bedtime stories when my grandmother would read it to my brother and I, when I was a toddler. She would put so much thought and action behind her words that would make the story exciting. Moreover, it was the only story I would have her read when we stayed the night at Papa and Gaga's house. A few books I remember reading my junior year included, "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert and "The Truth About Forever" by Sarah Dessen. As my senior year came along I had to prepare for graduation. In my English class I had to pick one book to write a paper over. Writing about something that was close and dear to me was important, so the book I decided on was "Chosen by A Horse" by Susan Richards. I have an immeasurable love for horses, so this book was easy for me to pick up and read and then write a paper. Having to include why I chose this book and how I could relate to it. Every week I had to read a certain amount of hours. I however, never read the amount of hours I was supposed to. I would just fill out the log and tell my mom to sign it. At that time it sounded like a good idea, but then came freshman year. Mrs. Daugherty changed my whole perspective on reading and how important it is to read. In elementary school, reading never came easy to me. My mom would always say, "The more you read, the better you'll be," but I never listened to her. Books were just not interesting to me. Monday through Friday the first thing that our teacher said to us when we walked into the classroom was, "Take out your books." Every Day in the beginning of the class we would read silently for ten minutes. Every day I would be roaming through the bookshelves looking for that one book that would be interesting to me. Then one day that changed. It was time for our second quarter book report. I spent the first few days looking for the perfect book, but I couldn't find it. So I asked for Mrs. Daugherty's help. She suggested a book and it ended up being a perfect fit. Once I found that book I couldn't put it down. I was so excited that I had finally found a book that interested me. I took it home every night and I finished it within a week. Once I finished it, I was anxious to find another good book, and I did. Throughout the rest of freshman year I read the whole Divergent series. I loved every single one of them. I would finish them within two weeks and start the next. Towards the end of freshman year I started to see my ability to comprehend what I read get better. I could read more quickly and I wouldn't have to read the passage over and over again to finally find the answer. I tried to push myself to keep finding the perfect book and to keep reading. Most people love to read and find it relaxing, but I'd rather just watch the movie about the book. For me, one of those memories is my mamaw always trying to read a book to me as a kid when all I wanted to do was play with my dolls. When I was little, I remember my mamaw reading to me at her and my papaw's big, stone house in Log Cabin. My mamaw always wanted me to love books the way she did, but I never really took to them. I have never had the patience to sit down and engage into a book without getting distracted by something else. But my mamaw, she could read all day if she had the time. • 37. How To Read A Picture Book How to Read a Picture Book Finding the perfect picture book to share with the whole world is tough. I searched the entire BYU–Idaho juvenile library to find one I liked more than any of the others. I liked a great deal of them, but it took me a long time to finally find the one I thought everybody should read. My pick for picture book to share with the world is The Whisper by Pamela Zagarenski. This book doesn't completely blow me away. It's not my absolute hands–down favorite picture book in the world. I'm not sure I have one of those, but I really, really like this one. And I think there are several key elements that make it an important addition to anyone's library. The book starts with a little girl talking to her teacher after school, right before she goes home. She notices a book standing alone on a shelf up high, and her teacher lends it to her. As she rushes home with the book in hand, the words fall out behind her. When she finishes her after–school routine and finally sits down with the book, she's dismayed to find there are only pictures, and no words. Then she hears a whisper tell her she can imagine the stories and use the pictures to tell them herself. So, if you're a parent or teacher reading to a child, you can ignore the words and just show the illustrations and tell the story as you like. If you're an older child reading the book by yourself, you can read it through once for the story, then continue reading it over and over again making up your own stories just like the girl ... Clearly shown by my reading habits, I showed interest in things most children I knew didn't care for. The struggle I displayed was similar to how Richard Rodriguez describes his experience in his essay The Lonely, Good Company of Books. "In spite of my earnestness, I found reading a pleasurable activity. I came to enjoy the lonely, good company of books." (Rodriguez 296). Richard Rodriguez found comfort in his reading and craved more and more novels. From tying my shoes to my ABC's she taught me so many things throughout my life. Enhancing how literacy fit into my life was one major thing my mom did for me. Similar to the reading Superman and Me by Alexie; we always had books lying around the house. We would take trips to the library to look for new books and we would attend the summer reading program. My mom would have me read anything and everything; menus, recipes, street signs, and books. Reading became an everyday thing for me. My mother has had a monumental impact on my love for literacy. She has shaped and molded the way I view Literacy and how it fit into my life. There were three major moments in my childhood that I remember where the books she had me read were extremely influential on my stance towards literacy. Sometime before I started preschool my mother bought a book that had a colossal impact on literacy in my life. I remember my mother coming into my room at bedtime to read me a new and exciting book. The book had a pink background with a large coconut tree on it, also it had multi–color letters all around the tree I will never forget this line; "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will there be enough at the top of the coconut tree.". With the increase of our children using the internet for video games, they have not had time to discover literature they like. Although the context in The Shining had more of a psychotic edge to it, it still delivered a pertinent message. The creepiness of this scene resonates in my mind, but I am constantly reminded to give myself a healthy balance between school and recreation. Regular reading also sets up young students for greater success later on in their school careers, and gets them on a good track for the rest of their life. Summary Of How Should One Read A Book By Virginia Woolf At the beginning of 'How Should One Read a Book?", Virginia Woolf introduces her piece by saying that a person must read a book by following their own instincts and that the essay is her opinion, suggestions and ideas. Woolf offers the readers of the essay several suggestions to how they should read a book. Her first suggestion is that the reader shouldn't jump into diverse genres with preconceived beliefs on what that specific genre has to offer. Instead, the reader should let their imagination take over and guide them through the book. Virginia also advises the reader to attempt to put themselves in the position of the author, to comprehend their endeavor. Towards the middle of the essay, Virginia's reminds the reader that biographies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The same goes for movies, as they are all just stories being acted out. In Thomas Foster's book, "How to Read Literature Like a Professor", Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients of a story. He discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The devices discussed in Foster's book can be found in most movies as well, including in Quentin Tarantino's cult classic, "Pulp Fiction". This movie is a complicated tale that follows numerous characters involved in intertwining stories. Tarantino utilizes many devices to make "Pulp Fiction" into an excellent film. In this essay, I will demonstrate how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His reason to go there is that he was asked by his boss. In the end, Vincent asks Mia is the events of the evening can stay between them and Mia agrees. The final outcome of Vincent's quest is that the two form a friendship with trust and respect. This mini story is just one example of how quests are used in "Pulp Fiction". Archetypes or symbols are described in Foster's book as being easy to identify but almost impossible to define. According to Foster, everyone wants a symbol to mean something incredibly specific (Foster 97). In "Pulp Fiction", the most prominent archetypes are the briefcase and the band–aid. Throughout the film, Marsellus Wallace wears a band–aid on the back of his neck and seeks out a briefcase which has been taken from him. The contents of the briefcase and the reason for the band–aid are never revealed throughout the movie. Whenever Marsellus does not have his briefcase, he is shown with the band–aid on the back of his neck and whenever he has his briefcase, the band–aid is gone. Anytime the briefcase is opened, the only thing seen is a bright golden light emanating from the case. Each character who sees what is inside of the case appears enthralled and amazed with the contents. A very popular theory about the meaning of the case and band–aid is that perhaps the ... • 69. What Is My Favorite Movie Essay This might be the hardest question for me to answer. What's my favorite movie? Like books, a movie is another way to connect with fictional characters and it really is hard to choose your favorite adventure. I would have to say I enjoy the movie White Chicks and any movie that I can have a good cry and laugh on – it's hard to choose a favorite movie. Some musical artists that I love listening to is Troye Sivan and Ed Sheeran. I really enjoy 3D art, like, working with clay. I also enjoy swimming (not competitively) To me, to be literate means that you are able to read and able to comprehend sentences. Also, when you are able to read a book and envision the story unfold in your mind. To be able to read is to be able to interpret a story into your own, what you think the author is telling you. I also believe that you can read movies, music, and people etc. For example, a psychologist is able to read people's expressions and emotions. A conductor or musician reads music and is able to interpret that into music. I see movies as books but just being played intron tot your eyes instead of words ... I remember thinking 'this lady was weird swallowing all these things' and 'How could she fit them in her mouth?' And 'The Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister. I remember feeling the shiny scale that were 3D. I also remember after reading the book that I walked around the house giving my mom and dad things to show them that I cared for them. • 71. What Does Liesel Symbolize In The Book Thief An incredibly important aspect in the Book Thief are books. The books are used for the plot of the book but also they were used as a symbol for many things including Liesel's ability to read and write, Liesel's character, and Liesel's ability to use words during the story. The first aspect that books symbolize in The Book Thief is Liesel's ability to read and write. Close to the beginning of the story, Liesel found The Gravedigger's Handbook during her brother's funeral. The book reads, "On her first night with the Hubermanns, she had hidden her last link to him– The Grave Digger's Handbook–under her mattress, and occasionally she would pull it out and hold it." This is also a quote from her first night staying with the Hubermanns. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Liesel stole a book for the first time before she knew how to read during her brother's funeral. In the book, it reads, "When he walked away, after a few dozen paces, a black book fell innocuously from his coat pocket without his knowledge." During this time, it was when the gravediggers were digging the grave for her brother and then a book fell out of one of their pockets. Liesel would then steal the book and kept it with her to remember her brother. Another time in the book that showed Liesel's character was when she stole book during the burning of the books. It reads, "If you were being flippant about it, you'd say that all it took was a little bit of fire, really, and some human shouting to go with it. You'd say that was all Liesel Meminger needed to apprehend her second stolen book, even if it smoked in her hands. Even if it lit her ribs." This is describing how Liesel stole The Shoulder Shrug. She took the book out of the fire and held it against her chest and ribs. This shows Liesel's character because it shows how she really is and likes to go against the system. The meaning of the burnings were to burn books and anything made by a Jew. The book was supposed to stay in the fire and burn because it was about a Jewish protagonist. Liesel's character influenced her decision to steal the book out of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. How To Read A Book Analysis I believe everyone deserves to read a book. Throughout my life as a middle schooler, I understood some of the meaningful definitions in a variety of books. From children to poetry to essays, each written work has a personal purpose to it. I believe there are different lessons taught. I believe responsibility is one of the lessons taught in some books. I remember the first few weeks when I was in 8th grade. I would be in a hurry doing last minute assignments such as book reports or essays because I was too busy being lazy or was at appointments, which I had several during that time. I personally enjoyed writing when I was in that class, but I hated reading. When the whole class began to read the Little Prince, I understood that the pilot wanted to stop talking to the little prince in order to fix his plane in the beginning, but I did not understand the why part. My English teacher explained that the pilot did not take a moment to be grateful of what is happening around him. He just did not see it with his own eyes. It would make one help understand more about what others think from their perspective. And yes, I got slightly more organized than how I was before. I believe loyalty to others is another of the lessons taught in some books. Around the same time when I began to read the Little Prince, I began to read the Percy ... There are three parts to the book: "Half–changed world", "Half– changed minds", Neurosexisam, and Recycling Gender. The reason I choose this book was because it dealt with gender and how in society and our mind we create the differences that are used against us. I thought that by reading it I would understand more from a psychologist's point of view how our thought process creates what we perceive as reality, what has been placed upon gender specific things by society, and how it has affected society. In the first half of the book, "Half–changed world", "Half–changed minds", the author argues about how social and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later in this section she critiques a study, which is widely cited, of the different ways babies' gaze. It was a study was that was conducted when the infants were just a day and a half old. It showed that the female babies were much more likely to gaze at faces, while baby boys preferred to look at a mobile. When the study was analyzed scientists took the results as evidence of the fact that girls are more empathic than boys, who are more analytic than girls. (Fine, 112,113,114) Fine does not include any kind of research of her own but she uses this part of the book to point out the faultiness of each of the researches who use this type of study to show the divergence between boys and girls. She does, however, include information on how neurosexism is nothing new and how its roots are in the mid–19th century when the motives behind the research were to restrict the access to higher education and the rights for women to vote. (Fine,172) In the last part of the book, Recycling Gender, Fine argues against the use of science as a justification of gender stereotypes and how that can impact our future generations in a negative way. In chapter 19 Fine talks about how "Anyone with ears can hear how adults constantly label gender with words: he, she, man, woman, boy, girl, and so on. And we do this even when we don't have to." (Fine,210) This is how a child learns to sort themselves into a gender category. Categories are already in place before the child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. How Should Mark A Book? "How to Mark a Book" by Mortimer Adler is an essay about how one should mark a book in order to actively engage in the act of reading. The essay describes the benefits of writing in books and how writing in books benefits the reader. Many interesting points are argued in this essay about why one should mark a book; however, some of the points mentioned are not entirely true. Even though marking in a book has proven to help a reader actively engage, that is not always the case. Adler's essay is directed towards a specific reader, the scholarly reader, and ignores the multitude of reading styles and needs, which is biased. Adler used many metaphors in his essay to describe various points, such as owning a book. According to Adler, until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, Adler pointed out that it is better to spend time with a book for thousands of hours, rather than magazines for thousands of hours. Adler ended the essay by saying that one should never lend books to their friends because they will be confused and also because one should never share their thoughts on a book with someone else. Adler ignores the reader who may be too poor to afford to buy books and needs to use a public library. The people who go to the public library are not allowed to write in the books that they check out. Adler, does address that if one cannot write in a book, then one should either write on a paper or post–its. Adler does not go into details much about what people should do if they cannot write into book too much, and only states: "You shouldn't mark up a book which isn't yours." Adler states that if one does now own the book, then they should not mark in the book. Books that are given by outside sources should not be marked on because the outside sources most likely expect one to return the book to them in the same condition that it was given to the reader in. Adler compares writing in a book given from an outside source to Paradise Lost. He writes, "I'd no more scribble over a first edition of Paradise Lost than I'd give my baby a set of crayons and an original Rembrandt!" (Wake Tech 32). Adler compares writing in a book that does not belong to the reader with an original copy of Paradise Lost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
