1. GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES MADE STUDENTS OF SPEAKING
CLASS: A CASE STUDY AT UNIVERSITAS TEKNOLOGI
YOGYAKARTA

Abstract
In line with the global communication, English speaking skill becomes paramount
in the international affairs. This skill is needed in communication by phone, conferences,
seminars, negotiation, winning the deal, job interviews, and the like. However, it takes
much time, energy, and practice to acquire the skill. Students learning the skill may be
hampered by some language barriers related grammar, diction, pronunciation, and L1
interference. This paper is going to discuss the grammatical mistakes made the students
of speaking class.
This study was conducted during the academic year 2009/2010. The data were
gathered by the instructor during a speaking class was going on, and while the students
had mid-semester tests and finals. The students involved in this study were the first year
students of S1 program, Faculty of Letters and Culture, Universitas Teknologi
Yogyakarta, who took the speaking course in the first and second semester.
The study showed that the students taking the speaking class, when they were
talking, made grammatical mistakes related to word order, tenses, sentence patterns,
omission, misuse of adverbs, adjectives, auxiliaries, prepositions, and conjunctions. By
knowing these kinds of mistakes earlier, a teacher may take some precautionary measures
to minimize the mistakes.
