2. the main image is of the character
‘Lucy’ and is the main convention on
the poster, which connotes that this is
the main topic of the soap opera is
the ultimate theme in the show. the
image has been manipulated so that
it the same dark and grainy brownish
colours of the backdrop of the
EastEnders title intro for the program.
There is also a fade of the edges of
Lucy, this gives the image no borders
and connotes that Lucy is blending
into the story of EastEnders an
transcending all other issues to
become the centrepiece of narrative.
The tagline is in upper case and so
connotes urgency and drama.
This will catch the attention of the
audience as it is more shocking. The
punctuation also has this effect as
the full stops make you pause and
reflect on the words and then
prepare yourself for the full impact
of the next word ‘FOREVER.’
The synergetic ‘#’ link to the twitter page
of EastEnders suggests that the audience
will want to find out as much information
about events before the show so they
fully understand want is happening this
link actively encourages the audience to
do this and builds on the ‘personal
relationship’ (Katz) between the
audience and the production studio of
the programme.
The studio logo is at the
bottom on the page and so
dose not interrupt the main
image of the tagline.
This connotes that they value
the audiences enjoyment of
the program more then the
boosting about their making
of it. It is also in the same
font as they use in all of the
BBC advertising and so
creates brand identity.
3. Analysis of EastEnders poster
• I would ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale: 1980)the use of effects of
the image to make the character can blend more easily
the background and make it flow better as there will be
now or little borders as shown in the EastEnders poster. I
will also ‘repeat’ having the model looking away from the
camera as this will look more natural and effective in the
showing of guilt or fear.
• I will ‘repeat’ the use of capitalisation of the tagline as this
gives the impression of urgency and threat. This will draw
in the audience as it is more striking to look at and catches
people eye more than the standard lettering. I will also
‘repeat’ the use of punctuation create pause and impact
for the next sentence. This will be more effective if a make
the tagline short and powerful.
4. The tagline ‘a week that
Hollyoaks will change
forever’ connotes finality
and is very decisive as it say
that it will change forever.
This also suggests that an
important aspect or
character will change as this
will be a noticeable
deference to future
episodes. The fact that it is
also in a white box connotes
a separateness from the
image and is in the brand
front of channel 4 and so
suggests inconsistency
between text and image.
The main image has a red fire effect on to
make it look as if the characters are coming
out of the flames. This connotes that the fire
will effect all their live in some way and that
they are all involved. Another integration is
that the fire is in facet a metaphor and that
this event will rip through them like a fire but
it is not literal. The characters in the image are
nude, which connotes vulnerability and
desperation as they try to cover themselves.
In turn suggests that in the narrative there
lives are going to be greatly scrutinised by the
other characters and the audience.
The institution logo is
see-through and this
means that they intend
that the story to be
more important.
However, the logo is
large and more
dominating them the
EastEnders poster and so
is less subtle.
The date is at the bottom
and with the slogan. This
connotes that it is of less
importance them the main
image but is of equal value
to the slogan. This
encourages the audience to
be ready at this time to
watch the programme.
5. • I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale: 1980) the use of the date on the poster as
this will clearly advertise when the new soap opera will be and this
will mean that the audience is likely to schedule in the time to what it
if they know when it is broadcast.
• I will also ‘repeat’ the see through effect on the institution logo as this
makes it lend better with the images but can still be seen easily. In my
poster I will try to make the institution logo smaller as to make it
more subtle.
• The effects used on the image is effective as it give a symbolic clue as
to the themes in the narrative. I shall ‘repeat’ this in my poster, not
necessarily for the character in in some part of my poster.
Analysis of Hollyoaks poster
6. The main image is shot from
the technical code of a low
angle long shot of all the
characters but is mostly
focused on the centrally frames
female character. This connotes
that she is the protagonist in
the narrative and that she is
the lead investigator. The low
angle connotes power and this
could mean that she is a
powerful figure or that this
murder case involves powerful
people. The dark colours
connote that the tale will
involve negative themes.
The tagline is written in
handwriting font style
and looks to written in
chalk. This connotes
that one the characters
themselves is writing
this to warn off the
investigators of this
murder. The verbal
code is very
threatening and
connotes that s great
many secretes shall be
unravelled in the
narrative tale. The
verbal code ‘the
investigation returns‘
connotes that the main
character has been
given a new piece of
evidence and that this
will unravel the plot of
the second season of
this serial drama.
The institution indent is small and at the bottom, this denotes that it
does not obstruct the main content and that the audience could
potentially not know about the production house, this connotes modesty.
This is for inspiration but is not a soap
opera
The date is written in bold, this
elevates the importance of this
date and encourages the
audience to watch at this time.
7. Analysis of The Killing poster
I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980):
• The low angle of the main image as this will make the scene more
dramatic and poignant for the audience. This is effective as it
makes the character large then they are and so gives them
elevated status.
• The varying fonts for the different text elements of the poster as
this will make it more interesting and engaging. Also the
handwriting example in this poster connotes desperation, this is a
similar theme and emotion that I would want to replicate in my
own production.
• The size of the institution logo as this is subtle and does not
detract from the story of the program being advertised.
8. The tagline “jealousy’s a killer” is very short
and memorable as it connotes danger. This
is because it gets the audience to realise
that jealousy is a very complex and
dangerous emotion that can have dire
effect on the friendships that you have. This
slogan is especially effective as everyone
knows how jealousy feels and so it evokes
more emotional meaning. The red colour of
the verbal code “KILLER” is effective as it
connotes lust and danger. This give the
audience anticipation of the coming events
in the narrative.
Student exemplar work
The main image denotes someone's arm with
a gun in his hand trained on his target. This
connotes high levels of danger and
desperation. This is also accomplished by the
blur and ‘warp’ effect on the edges of the
picture as this connotes the extension of time
and so the person is highly focused on the job
at hand. This also indicates that there is a high
emotional value placed on this killing which
will attract the audience to what the series.
The synergy with social
media acts to create the
personal relationship (Katz)
that modern media
audiences demand. This
helps the audiences
communicate their feelings
about the series to like
minded people.
The institution logo
establishes who the
makers of the program.
This informs them not only
of the production house
but also where to find it as
it is clearly displayed as
being on ‘BBC2’. The small
size of the ident connotes
that they care more about
the program and the story
than boasting that they
made it.
The date is in the same blue and gradient font
as the main title of the poster. This denotes
brand identity.
9. Analysis of student exemplar work
I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale):
• The synergy with social media as this is an important step to creating
the ‘personal relationship (Katz’ Uses and Gratifications) that the
audience will want to have in their power.
• The short length in the tagline is very important to attract the
audience as it is more memorable and eye catching. I will also repeat
the use of different colours to evoke different emotional responses
depending on the desired effect
