One of the key challenges in any sized organization is sharing technical or operational content between the Main Documentation Team and the Training Department.
You walk onto any documentation floor and up one end is Tech Doc and up the other end you will find the Trainers.
They often work with minimal interaction with each other and yet if you were to review both document types you would find 60 to 80% of the content is identical and that identical content is normally the Working Tasks, Steps or Instructional content on how to do something correctly.
Strategic assets require (along with other important elements) technical manuals, operational manuals and training material. Depending on project budgets and contracts, the format and delivery of courseware and manuals will vary.
However, it is at this start/planning point that silo's will be built or avoided through the use of latest Industry Specifications, Guidelines and best practice tools.
Moving course content to a SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model). This means:
* Creating courseware with an LCMS (Learning Content Management System), which will give us consistent materials.
* Re-using technical content from Data Modules in the CSDB, allows for the repurposing of technical content.
* Can upload SCORM compliant courseware to LMS (Learning Management Solution).
* For material to be managed and shared across multiple courses.
* SCORM content can also be used in the field in IETM Viewers. Good for staff to refresh themselves on certain topics out in the field and self-audit.
* Output content to print as Training Manuals with XSL-FO.
* If Powerpoints are still being utilised in the classroom .
* It is felt they add value to steps in on-line content they can also be re-used in the LMS as SCORM training "objects".

Technical and Operational vs Training
How can we avoid silos and share content, when the
departments have different deliverable goals

3. Typical Projects
Strategic Assets / Equipment require up to date:
Technical Manuals
Operational Manuals
Training Manuals
Depending on project budgets and contracts:
Format and delivery of courseware will vary
Silos between technical and training can and should be avoided

4. Goals – Technical/Operational Content
Technical Maintainer and Operator Information
Clear consistent information without waffle
Step 1. Walk to Helicopter.
Step 2. Touch Helicopter.
Step 3. Walk back from Helicopter.

5. Goals – Training Content
Courseware is part of an overall training plan
Needs to focus on:
Each Training module goal - why are we doing this?
Technical content
Step 1. Walk to Helicopter.
Step 2. Touch Helicopter.
Step 3. Walk back from Helicopter.

6. Courseware Creation - Currently
Traditional training content:
Word for Training Materials
PowerPoint for classroom discussion
Add some HTML and /or PDF combo to get content “online”

7. Courseware Creation – The Future
Still Classroom training:
Core content is technical is held in S1000D data modules
Overviews, exercises and questions are also data modules
(DMs a new concept for trainers, as it was for writers)
Output mixed content to classic student manual design
Benefits:
Re-use of technical content
Updates to technical content is automatically updated,
keeping training materials technically correct.

8. DEMONSTRATION 1
1. Re-use for traditional classroom delivery
Author technical content in XML – S1000D
Author training content in XML – S1000D
Publish all data modules to a single training manual

9. Courseware Creation – Delivery “everywhere”
Create content using LCMS
Share technical content from CSDB
Upload into LMS for online / eLearning
Manage and re-use training objects/modules in the
LMS across different courses
Output SCOs for use off-line in IETM Viewers
Output XML to print training materials
Generate PowerPoints for use in classroom
Re-use PowerPoints in LMS (if appropriate)

Editor's Notes
TH: Good afternoon and welcome to today’s information session: Using S1000D technical data in a learning and SCORM environment.I’m Tammy Halter, the CEO of Absolute Data Group and I’ll be your host today. There are still a few people yet to join us, so while we wait for them I’m going to go through some housekeeping with you.
Writers in Technical or Operational Teams have to work with engineering and logistical support analysis teams, they strive to deliver clear, consistent information without “waffle”.Step 1. Walk to Helicopter.Step 2. Touch Helicopter.Step 3. Walk back from Helicopter.
Training developers however, create training courseware as part of an overral training plan. They use multimedia, technical content and referenced information to enhance the training experience and of course there is normally an exam component. With Trainers focused on student performance and course outcomes. The content for the Helicopter scenario would include:A discussion on “Why are we touching the HelicopterThe technical steps to perform task. Which should be exact step & detail as those being done in field/operational environment. Then they will cover A REVIEW on what would have happened if we have not performed those steps, or not in right order. And then we often End with an Exam …”
Microsoft Word is commonly used to create the Training manual. The .DOC format is proprietary, and does not allow real re-use outside of “cut and paste”. And of course in the Technical or Operational content is being prepared in and XML specification such as S1000D, then Word cannot handle re-using the S1000D steps. Then discussion notes/powerpoints are designed for use in the classroomSome might be trying something a little adventurous and exporting their Word documents to HTML or PDF for a partial online delivery goal
