Name: Jeremy
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Education: First year graduate at
College of Engineering, University
of Michigan. Major in Industrial and
Operations Engineering (IOE)
Computer use: Professional
Information search skills: Medium
Internet use: 4 hours/day
Interest: Cycling, basketball, music
Location: Ann Arbor
Personal Information
Jeremy is a first year IOE graduate student in the
College of Engineering at the University of
Michigan. He enjoys his studies and living in Ann
Arbor. He is an excellent student and gets top
grades in his classes.
He spends most of his time in classes, labs, and
libraries. He connects to the Internet mainly to
check email, search course-related information,
and submit assignments to CTools. During his
leisure time, he watches sports on ESPN and news
on CNN. He rarely browses websites on his mobile
phone unless necessary because he finds it
difficult to read the small text and tap on tiny
buttons.
Jeremy recently started his second semester. He is
looking for an internship for the summer in order
to get prepared for his future career. However, he
is uncertain if his resume is sufficient for finding
internships at the graduate level. He came to
graduate school straight out of undergraduate and
has little work experience. He decides to go to the
ECRC website for help in searching and preparing
for internship opportunities.
2. Scenario 1 - Jeremy!
!
This is Jeremy’s second time using the ECRC website. He is looking for resources that can
help him revise his resume and write his cover letters. He is not familiar with the website
and does not know whether there is a guide for writing resumes and cover letters. He
finds two navigation bars on the website, one horizontal across the top of the screen and
one vertical along the left side of the screen. He decides to use the horizontal navigation
bar. He moves the cursor over the “Student and Alumni” tab and a drop-down list
appears with a number of options. He cannot decide which to choose because none of the
options reference resumes and/or cover letters. After thinking for a few minutes, he clicks
on the “Career Manual for Student” and it opens a PDF file. In the table of contents, he
finds a section on resumes and cover letters. He feels happy with this lucky guess. He
goes through the guides, tips, and samples provided in the manual, but still has a number
of questions. The tips provided in the manual are general and the samples are quite
different from his own situation. He feels a little disappointed and decides to schedule an
appointment with an ECRC advisor to get some in-person advice about his resume and
cover letter.!
!
He returns to the homepage and looks for contact information for the ECRC office. He
finds two places that contain contact information, one on the left under the photo of an
ECRC employee and the other on the right in a blue sidebar. He compares the two phone
numbers and finds that they are the same. He calls the number and makes an
appointment for resume and cover letter advice.!
!
After he hangs up the phone, he notices the “Events Calendar” tab on the sidebar. He
clicks on it and goes to a calendar with some upcoming events. He thinks it quite useful
and decides to explore the calendar more to see if there is any valuable information for
finding a summer internship. He clicks on an event that he thinks sounds interesting and
some brief information about the event pops up. He clicks on the “Details” link at the
bottom of the pop-up, which leads him to a separate page with details about the event. At
the bottom of the “Details” page he finds the button “Add to Google Calendar”. He clicks
on it and goes to the Google Calendar “Edit Event” page. The time and location of that
event has already been entered so he clicks the “Save” button. He finds this experience
very convenient and plans to continue to look for other events.!

Personal Information
Linda is a junior undergraduate student in the
College of Engineering at the University of
Michigan. She is tech-savvy and spends most of
her time in front of her laptop, checking email,
reading, doing homework, browsing local and
global news, and watching YouTube. She is good
at searching for information that she needs by
using the right keywords and using filters. She is
a big fan of video games, but has not had as much
time to play lately. She expects to work in the
video game industry and develop games after
graduation. Currently she is looking for a
part-time job related to game development in
order to earn some relevant experience.
She started using the ECRC website to search
career resources when she was a sophomore and
is quite familiar with the website now. Last year
she found an information session for an IT
company on the ECRC website. After attending
the session, she applied online for a summer
internship with that IT company and ultimately
received an offer. As a result of that successful
experience, she returns to the ECRC website every
day and checks for new career-related
information.
4. Scenario 2 - Linda!
!
It is Monday morning and Linda opens her MacBook Pro first thing as usual. After
logging in, she receives several email notifications. The ECRC weekly email immediately
grabs her attention and she clicks the link in the email that takes her to the ECRC
Additional Corporate Events Calendar. Several information sessions are listed on the
calendar, but she quickly realizes that those companies only offer full-time positions. She
decides to check other resources for part-time jobs.!

needs. She first clicks on the “Students and Alumni” tab on the vertical sidebar on the left-
hand side of the screen and goes to “Job Search Resources”. On that page, she clicks on
the hyperlink associated with additional job search information and opens a PDF file that
lists job search links categorized by major. She goes to the Computer Science and
Computer Engineering section, finds the link with the description of “gaming,” and
spends some time searching for part-time job opportunities there.!
!
Next, she returns to the ECRC website and checks out the events calendar. She finds one
event that she would like to attend and adds the event to her Google Calendar. Finally, she
goes back to the ECRC homepage and selects the ENGenius.Jobs link in order to check out
job postings and interview messages there. !

5. Goals

Personal Information
Sandy Burgess has been a recruiter with Crayon
Chemical Company for 8 years. Previously, Sandy
worked as a process engineer for a large oil
company for 25 years. As a process engineer,
Sandy was constantly traveling for work and
rarely at home. She loved working in the field,
but eventually grew tired of the constant travel.
She decided that going into management and
recruiting would be a nice diversion from the
hectic life of a process engineer. Sandy feels that
she can bring her knowledge of the industry and
depth of her experience to identify the most
qualified candidates in field. More importantly,
she finds that being a manager/recruiter gives
her more time to spend with her family,
something she was not able to do when she
worked as a process engineer.

6. Scenario 3 - Sandy!
!
Sandy Burgess would like to recruit more U-M School of Engineering students for
summer internships and permanent employment at Crayon Chemical. In the past, her
company hired two students from the U-M School of Engineering for summer internships
and was very pleased with their technical skills and critical thinking ability. For this
reason, Sandy wants to have a steady stream of students from U-M work and intern at
Crayon Chemical. However, she feels that her company is not as well known as the other
major companies that also recruit at U-M. She wants to increase her company’s visibility
so that more students will apply for jobs with Crayon Chemical. While at work, she goes
online from her desktop computer to see if U-M has any information for employers about
hiring engineering students.!
!
Sandy Google’s U-M School of Engineering and clicks on the link. On its homepage, she
does not notice any links for employers, so she types in “Employers” in the search field,
which returns the result, “Employers-Engineering Career Resource.” She clicks on this
link and it directs her to the Engineering Career Resource Center homepage. She sees a
span of company logos on the page with a caption underneath that reads, “ECRC
Corporate Partner Program” and clicks on the link to read more about it. She sees that the
program promises increased visibility and the promotion that her company needs to be
successful in hiring more U-M students. Sandy continues to browse the ECRC website
and decides that she will call the contact person whose picture is displayed on the page
for more information. !
!
Before calling the office, Sandy notices a tab for Employers on the left navigation bar and
clicks on it. Underneath the Employer tab, additional tabs for Career Fairs, Building a
Campus presence, On Campus Interviews are also displayed. Sandy notices that each tab
provides helpful information that could help Crayon Chemical build their brand and hire
more students. Sandy looks at the Career Fair tab and notices that there is a career fair
offered in 4 weeks. She decides to call the ECRC to see how she can register Crayon
Chemical to attend. She is told by the ECRC staff that she will need to register with
ENGenius.Jobs, the online employment management system for employers and students.
The staff person gives Sandy the link for EnGenius.Jobs and also provides Sandy with
more information about the Corporate Partners Program.!
!
Sandy registers her company on ENGenius.Jobs and posts two internship positions and
one permanent job listing. Within one week she receives 30 resumes from U-M students.
She reviews the resumes and selects which candidates her company will interview when
she attends the U-M Engineering Career Fair. She continues to check the events calendar
website over the next year to stay informed of School of Engineering events. She also
remains in contact with the ECRC staff so that she can decide if the Corporate Partners
Program will be something her company will use.!
