Steps to use the prototype

1. Final Design
The following section is going to serve as an introduction to the design of the final
version of the application. For the ease of the readers the section is divided into five
main parts that mimic the five main sections of the application.
1. Login Screen
As the name suggests, the first screen of the LeftOver’s application is the login screen.
Although all the user’s data is present within the application and there is no real need
for the user to login, it was conscious design decision to provide the user with the
ability to lock the application with the help of a password. It was envisaged that this
would help provide the users with a sense of security that nobody could misuse their
application.
2) News Feed Section
The news feed section is the major screen of the LeftOver’s application. It fosters the
maximum number of interactions that a user can perform within the application.
Looking at the image below(left) we can see that news feed is a list of all the important
things that have been shared by the various people that live in your community. The list
is the first thing the users see when they login to the application. It provides the user of
the application to look at the different things that are going on to find the one he/she
may be interested in and then interact with it in the form of liking the information,
commenting on it, locating where it is happening or saving it to the calendar to get
notified about it at a later time.

It is interesting to see the various ways the news feed section fosters communication
between its users. For example, the write a comment features allows the user to react
to the information that interests him and thereby opens up a channel of communication
between the person who shared the information and the users of the application. In
addition to this, clicking the location marker icon that is associated with some of the
information that has been shown above, brings up the screen on the left (given below).
The screen is called the map screen and is leveraging the highly customizable nature of
the LeftOver’s application to provide the user with location data relevant to his context
and to the information that he is interacting with. It provides the user with a navigate
functionality that shows the user his location relative to person who had shared the
information in the first place. This functionality is very useful especially for users that
have just moved into a new community and are still trying to find their way around the
new place. It helps them overcome the anxiety of not knowing where to go and how to
get there.

Another important interaction fostered by this screen is the ability to save any
important dates that have been shared by other people in the news feed. As can be
seen below, clicking the calendar icon associated with the information brings up this
dialog panel that confirms that the date and time have been added to the calendar.
This is a particularly interesting design choice that was made keeping in mind the busy
schedule the users of the LeftOver’s application lead. Due to this busy lifestyle, they
don’t need to remember the important information, the application will do that for
them.

Lastly, the news feed application supports the addition of content into the news feed
section that is shared with all the different users within the community. The screen
shown above(right), is the add details screen which can be accessed by pressing the
new post button on the home screen of the news feed section. It can be seen that the
screen allows for a number of different things to be put into the information being
shared with the community. This was a decision design to allows the maximum
freedom to the user while sharing information with the user. For example, this screen
can be used to say “hello” to all the neighbours of a user or this screen could be used
to set up an invitation for a party at a specific time and location. The user has complete
authority on what he wants to share with the people in his neighbourhood. The ability
to share information empowers the users of the application to be able to express
himself, whenever he/she feel they are comfortable in doing so.
3) Community Section
The community section is the standout feature of the LeftOver’s application over its
competitors and it makes use of the highly customizable nature of the application. The
community screen, as can be seen below(left), consists of a main screen that lists all

5. the different floors that may be present in a building that one lives in. It is important to
note here that in case the user does not live in a community with buildings, this screen
will be changed to match the nature of the community the user lives in.
Clicking on a floor brings up the details of the floor, in this case the number of rooms
present and the number of them which are occupied. However, to allow the user to
further engage with the data provided by the application, a second screen (right)
appears when the floor map button is clicked. The floor map screen provides the user
with a physical layout of the different rooms that are present on the floor that had been
selected. The rooms are color coded and are clickable buttons that allow for a further
level of interaction.
The red rooms denote the users that have chosen to keep their information private and
who are not interested in engaging with other users. The blue rooms are representative
of the unoccupied rooms. The green rooms allow the users to view the people who live
in those rooms. However, as an added motivator to start a conversation, the green

6. room popups have the added ability that allows the user to send a message to the
person they are viewing(far right). This again is aimed to provide the user a means of
communicating with other people in their neighbourhood but at a pace that is suitable
for them.
4) Profile Section
The profile section is a place where the user can view his profile and change his
display picture. Moreover, the user can use this screen to set his privacy settings on
whether he wants to make his information private or not. Lastly, the profile screen also
provides the user the ability to send and receives messages from other users of the
application.
The messaging application can be accessed by pressing the “+” icon on the profile
screen. The interface of the message application is kept simple, however it can be
seen that as soon as the user starts to type in the name of the person he would like to
message, the applications starts providing recommendations. This messaging screen
can be used to create group messages such as party invites, etcs.

5) Misc Interactions
The LeftOver’s application also fosters some subtle interactions that form a vital part of
the entire system. For example, the application notifies its existing users when a new
person moves into the community. The users can then use the notification to in turn
send the new person greeting to welcome them to the neighbourhood(left-below). It
was aimed that this would help the new person settle in more easily into his/her new
neighbourhood.
Furthermore, the application has a inbuilt notification system that alerts the user to
messages being sent to his from the various users of the application. This was done to
immediately direct the attention of the user towards a direct communication attempt
made by other users, in hopes to foster that communication.
