Music Video Production Evaluation
I made a Music Videoof Awolnation’ssongSail.The reasonthatthissongwaspickedwasbecause
the people Iwasworkingwith,JoshRothwell,HarryPowell,ConnorDavidsonandShakeel Uddin,
ultimatelydecidedthatwe were goingtomake a Music Videobasedoff of thatsong.The narrative
of the songis thatthe maincharacter isupsetthat he can’t geta girl he likestolike himback.He
thenstress’soutoverit andthendecidestogo and see her,onlytofindoutthat she is goingout
withsomeone else.Destroyedbythisrevelation,the maincharacterdecidestocommitsuicide.
The Music Videostartswiththe protagonist(JoshRothwell)walkingoutof college.He thenseesthe
girl he likes(LaurenAllard) outside of college. LaurenlooksatJoshfora few momentsandthen
turns awayfromhim,to showthat she is notinterestedintalkingtohim.Joshthengoeshome upset
that Laurendoesn’tlike him.He thenpullsoutabottle of alcohol fromhisdraw andgoesout. He
walksto a place undera bridge todrink.He thengetsfrustratedandthenthrowshisbottle against
the wall of the bridge.He thenwakesupinthe middle of a fieldandstartslookingaroundashe is
confused.He thenrunsto go and findLauren,butfindsthatshe is goingoutwithsomeone else
(Harry Powell).Joshisdestroyedbythisandthenrunsaway.He thensitsundera tree feeling
depressed.UpsetwithwhathashappenedJoshthentakeshisownlife byeatingpills.
Overall Ithinkthatmy Music Videowasa terrible effort.ComparedtomyFilmTitle Opening
Sequence,Itwasn’tasgood.My FilmTitle OpeningSequencewasgoodbecause itwasshort,so it
didn’toutstay itswelcome,itwasbasicandnot overcomplicatedandthe vibe thatwascomingoff
of itwas straightforward;itwas an actionorientatedfilm.The onlycriticismIhave wasthat itwas a
little flat;howevergivenwhatIhad to workwith and mylack of experience, itcame outgood.With
my Music Videohowever,itwaspoorlymade.Itwas a longderriere messthatmade nosense the
more I lookback at it. The onlyexcuse Ihave forthe lackof qualitywasthatI was given insufficient
footage tomake a Music Video thatIcouldpersonallylookatandsay “I made that and I’mproud of
it”,but evenwiththe lackof material forthe FilmOpeningTitle Sequence thatcame outgood.One
problemwaswiththe MusicVideowasthat itwas inconsistent.Examplesare that at 0:44 whenJosh
pullsouthisbottle,youcan see someone movinginthe top rightcorner.WhenJoshleavesthe
house at 0:55, he wasn’twearinga coat but at 1:02 he iswearingone andthenhe stopswearingit
full stopat 1:37. The weatherwasinconsistentasyoucan tell thatit wasrainingat 1:02 but it wasn’t
raininganywhere elseinthe video. IcouldclaimthatI wasbeingabstractbut that’snot the reason,
it wasbecause I wasbeinglazy,andevenif Iwas beingabstract,thenitwasn’texecutedinaway
that wasn’tgoodenoughto evenbe consideredabstract, insteaditwasina wayyou couldobviously
tell thatI was lyingif IclaimedIwas beingabstract.Accordingto mypartners,I alsoassembledthe
Music Videointhe wrongorder,butI decidedtodo somethingdifferentandnotconformwithmy
peers,howeverwhenIlookedatmypeerswork,itwasn’tbetteror worse thanmine andtheyall
justlookedlike anunorganisedmess. WhenIlookatmy Music Video,Ifeel like nothingfallsinto
place properlyandthat itwasn’tassembledproperly.Ifeellike thatthe songwe pickedwasapoor
choice,since itwasa songthat had a romance vibe to it,whichliterallyconsistsof 99% of songs
made these days,andtryingto make Music Videosforthose sortof songsare boringand uninspired.
On a side note I didfeel boardmakingthe MusicVideo,incomparisonmyFilmOpeningTitle
Sequence whichwasalotmore funto make.Maybe it’sjustme because the songwasn’tsomething
I was toothrilledtomake a Music Videoforanditwas conflictingwithwhatIthinkmakesagood

Music Video. The MusicVideowasnarrative,butIthinkwe shouldhave done concept,since the
actual songsMusic Videoisconcept,butIactuallythinkthatAwolnationsMusicVideowas
uninspiredandlookingbackonit I thinkwe couldhave improvedonit,insteadof makingatrashy
narrative conceptthat hasbeendone time andtime again.Where Itriedto be different and
somewhatabstractwithnarrative didn’tworkoutproperly,andjust endedupfeelingmore like they
existedtoactas fillersratherthan to continue the plot orto make the Music Videolookbetterand
interesting,andwasa poor attemptat beingsomewhat abstract,primarilyat2:28-3:00. WhenI
genuinelytriedbeingabstractI’mconflictedwiththe thoughtof “Abdul youonlyputthatinbecause
youwere runninglowonfootage to coverthe entire MusicVideo”,towhichIwill replaywith“yes
that’strue butI’ll justsay that itsabstract to make myself feel betteraboutit”. Ona side note when
I was creatingthe Music VideoIdidrunout of footage,andwhenIwantedtobe abstract I justput
somethingratherpoortogetherandsaid that itwas abstract, whenreallyitwasa wayto extendthe
Music Video. Ialsocouldn’tthinkof anythingbettertomake the MusicVideoabstractand I don’t
like myeffortof attemptingto be abstract.
In conclusion,myMusicVideowasapoor effortinbothbeingnarrative andtryingto be abstract. It
feltflatandboring,wasa conceptthat hadbeendone to deathand had beenheavilyinconsistent
throughout.If I couldredothe Music Video,thenIwouldlearnfromthe mistakesImade thatI have
highlightedinthisevaluationandmake somethingbetter.ThingsIwouldfocusonspecificallywould
be to choose a song that isshort,choose a song that I couldmake a good conceptideafor,come up
withwaysto be differenti.e.come upwithabstractideasthat make sense andhave some sortof
contexttothemand filmsuitable footagethatIcan use tomake a goodMusic Videowith.
