3. EVs and the Power Grid
EVs can be a problem if they are charged in an
uncontrollable way
E.g. charge the vehicles when come back to home from work (in
the early evening)
EVs can be a solution if used smartly
Charge the EVs when there is high production and low demand
Two Approaches
Optimized
Rule-based

4. Optimization
How can we reduce the demand and losses?
Power equations are non-linear!
Power losses equations are non-linear!
Can we use linear equation and ending up reduces
losses?
Keep the demand constant

7. Tools
OpenDSS:is used for supporting distributed resource
integration and grid modernization efforts.
OMNeT++:data communication system simulator.
INET framework: provides data communication protocols.
SGsim framework:make it possible to test and implement
smart grids.
R tool: free software environment for statistical computing
and graphics. It is used to compute the optimal time to
charge the EVs.

17. Conclusion
The impact of EVs may be:
Bad (dumb charge)
Good (smart charge)
large number of EVs (such as parking stations) would have a
serious impact.
Smart charging strategies ;constant demand, profit
maximization, voltage regulation and reactive power
injection; improve the performance of the power grid:
Mange the demand
Mange the increase of electricity price
Reactive power control
Power quality
Reduce power losses
Reduce the investments in the grid modernization
