Introduction
 Pakistan is country of diverse landscapes, wildlife and
ecosystems
 The rivers and lakes in Pakistan provide habitat for
fish, amphibians and reptiles
 The Gilgit-Baltistan region blessed with great fresh
water resources
 The fish fauna in GB is relatively poor due to high
turbidity, low water temperature, high water speed

 The fresh water resources contain several fish species
 There are about 20 species which belongs to four
families
 Salmoridae, Cyprinidae, Noemacheilidae and sisoridea
families
 17 fish species are native and 3 are exotic species
List of 20 fish species
Himalayan Cat Fish
 Glyptostemum Reticulatum specie belongs to
Sisoridae family
 Originated from Southren Asia, Turkey, Syria and
China.
 Most of these fish have four pairs of barbels and a
large adipose fin
 Cat fish have short head, small eyes, grey color, yellow
fins and medium size 24 cm
 Breeds in season from May to July

 Cat fish is carnivorous, feeds on insects larvae
Yasin Triplophysa Loach
 Triplophysa yasinensis is specie of Noemacheilidae
family
 It is present in GB except upper reaches of river
 Occurs in streams, shallow, springs and rivers
 8 cm long serves as food for brown trout
 Feeds on insect larvae and breeds during May to June

 Color is dark mottled, small eyes, body elongate and
robust with long narrow caudal peduncle poorly
finbraited
Trewavase Triplophysa laoch
 Triplophysa trewavasae is specie of Noemacheilidae
family
 Body long and slender in shape, small eye, head and
anterior part is depressed, tail compressed
 Body color is brownish above and yellowish on belly
 Dorsal and caudal fins spotted

 Triplophysa Ternuicauda belongs to family
Noemacheilidae
 Lives in springs, streams and channels
 Body length goes to 6 cm, elongate, narrow with long
whip like tail
 Head is pointed, eyes not very small, mouth is semi
circular and fleshy lips
 Body color is brown and rows of spots present along
lateral line

 Triplophsya Micro specie
 Live in shallow streams and river
 Body is elongate and slender, small eyes, mouth is
lunette and horizontal
 Body with numerous strips; 16-17 cross bands present
 Feeds on aquatic larvae
 Breeds from May to July
Triplophysa Gracilis laoch
 Live in lower Indus in Diamer of Gilgit
 Feeds on aquatic insect larvae
 Head and anterior body depressed, tail compressed
and whip like
 Small eyes mouth lunette and horizontal
 Color brownish above, yellowish on belly
 Body length of 11 cm attains

 Stream lined body, mouth is inferior
 Hard cartilaginous covering below lower jaw

 Lives in rivers and lakes

Alwan Snow Trout
 Shizothorax plagiostomus belongs to family cyprinidae
 Body dark grey in color ,lighter on sides and silvery
white from below
 Large scales presents along the fins base
 Breeds under 15-20 0C temerature
 Sexually mature when reach at 18-24 cm length

Indus Snow Trout
 Family cyprinidae specie name is Ptychobarbus
Conirostris
 Body is 30 cm long
 It is benthopelagic fish specie present in the Indus
river and its tributaries
 Inhabits of mountain streams and river
 Found in large deep and rapid flowing river
 Present in India, Pakistan and Tibetan fresh water
Kunar Snow Trout
 It is specie of ray-finned fish in the genus Schizothorax
scientific name is Racoma Labiata and Cyprinidae
family
 Found in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and
Tibet
 Inhabit of hills streams
 Feed on mixed; plant and animal
Mountain Snow Trout
 Schizopyge esocinus is a specie of Cyprinidae family
 Mostly found in streams, rivers and gravels bottomed
rivers
 They feeds on bottom detritus
 Migrate to spawn in streams where breeding occurs in
gravel and sandy beds
Sattar Snow Trout
 Schizopyge curvifrous is scientific name
 Native to Southern Asia from Iran to China
 It can be found in fresh water habitats
 It can reach length of 56 cm and weight up to 1.3 kilo
gram
 It is important to local commercial fisheries
Tibetan Snow Trout
 Diptychus masculatus is scientific name
 It have scaly type of body
 Derived from Greek word di, meaning “two” and the
ptyx meaning “folds ”
Stoliczkas Snow Trout
 Schizopygopsis stoliczkai specie belongs to family
cyprinidae
 Resh water fish living in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran,
India and Tibet
 Young individuals and adults live in shallow streams
and pondswhile large inhabit the rivers
 Grows to 34 cm and live in benthoplegic fresh water
Dongu Snow Trout
 Scientific name is schizothorax dainelli belongs to
family cyprinidae
 Occurs in mountain rivers, streams and lakes
 Found in India, Pakistan, Indus river
 Size of body is maximum 300 mm
 Live in benthopelagic and fresh water resources
Common Carp
 Scientific name is cyprinus Carpio belonging to family
cyprinidae
 It is exotic fish which is widely spread through lakes
and river of Europe and Asia
 Prefer large bodies of slow or standing water and soft
vegetation sediments
 Carp fish is slimmer with red flesh and forward-
protruding mouth
 Lives in groups
 The ideal temperature is 23-300C
 Breeds beginning at 17-18 0C
 Survive winter in frozen ponds as long as free water
remains
 Below the ice caps are able to tolerate water with very
low oxygen level
Rainbow Trout
 Oncorhynchus mykiss, Family salmoridae
 Game fish native to cold streams and lakes
 Stay in streams but some migrates to sea on the three
years after hatching
 Ref splash and spots across their sides
 Size varies with food availability and temperature
 They develop rapidly
Brown Trout
 Salmo trutta fario , family salmoridae
 Native to Europe
 Most spend entire lives in the fresh water streams
some migrates to down stream
 Prefer cool water below 19 0C
 Trout have dark spot covering, upper half body and
fins
 Red spot scattered across the mid line
 Spawning from November to January every year subject to
the water parameters and nutritional availability

Introduction  Pakistan is country of diverse landscapes, wildlife and ecosystems  The rivers and lakes in Pakistan provide habitat for fish, amphibians and reptiles  The Gilgit-Baltistan region blessed with great fresh water resources  The fish fauna in GB is relatively poor due to high turbidity, low water temperature, high water speed
  • 4. Cont….  The fresh water resources contain several fish species  There are about 20 species which belongs to four families  Salmoridae, Cyprinidae, Noemacheilidae and sisoridea families  17 fish species are native and 3 are exotic species

Himalayan Cat Fish  Glyptostemum Reticulatum specie belongs to Sisoridae family  Originated from Southren Asia, Turkey, Syria and China.  Most of these fish have four pairs of barbels and a large adipose fin  Cat fish have short head, small eyes, grey color, yellow fins and medium size 24 cm  Breeds in season from May to July
