2. More than 80% of the world’s population lives in
countries where income differentials are widening
The poorest 40% of the world’s population
accounts for 5% of global income. The richest 20%
accounts for ¾ of world income.
According to UNICEF (United Nations
International Children's Emergency Fund), 22,000
children die each day because of poverty. And
they "die quietly in some of the poorest villages on
earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the
conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in
life makes these dying multitudes even more
invisible in death."
3. Poor children and teens are also at greater risk for some bad
outcomes such as poor academic achievement, school dropout,
abuse and neglect, behavioural and socio-emotional problems,
physical health problems, and developmental delays.
Low birth weight
Poor nutrition which is manifested in the following ways: a.
Inadequate food which can lead to food insecurity/hunger .
Lack of access to healthy foods and areas for play or sports which
can lead to childhood overweight or obesity
Chronic conditions such as asthma, anemia and pneumonia
Exposure to environmental contaminants, e.g., lead paint and
toxic waste dumps
4. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (or the Gates
Foundation, abbreviated as BMGF) is the largest
private foundation in the world, founded by Bill
and Melinda Gates. It was launched in 2000 and is
said to be the largest transparently operated
private foundation in the world.
The primary aims of the foundation are, globally,
to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty,
and in America, to expand educational
opportunities and access to information
technology.
