Business Description
According to IBISWorld (2016), “The industry is characterized by low concentration,
with owner-operators accounting for over 90.0% of industry companies. With high levels of
fragmentation, industry operators experience intense price competition and generally earn low
profit margins. In 2016, the average industry profit margin is estimated to account for 7.1% of
industry revenue, up from 4.8% in 2011. Industry operators have historically passed on increased
fuel costs to consumers via fuel surcharges, but diesel prices have fallen steadily since 2013.
This has resulted in higher profit margins but lower revenue growth over the five-year period.
With relatively healthy profit margins, industry participants have been forced to offer
competitive wages and benefits to draw in and retain the best employees. As a result, IBISWorld
forecasts that total wages will increase at an annualized rate of 4.0% to about $48.5 billion in the
five years to 2016”. Revenue (in current dollars) for US railroads, trucking, and water

Marketing Strategy
Lady Aries Express will hire a business consultant to help the company conduct a SWOT
Analysis, this will then lead our company in the right direction when it comes to defining our
strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats.
Definition of the Market
 Strength
Lady Aries Express strengths will include the company’s supply chain, cost advantage,
size advantage, overall customer loyalty among the domestic players in the market.
 Weakness
Lady Aries Express weakness can be a lack of financing, the cost structure of the
company, and it may depend on how the company is gaining ground in the industry.
 Opportunities
Lady Aries Express opportunities according to IBISWorld (2016), “The industrial
production index reflects the health of the manufacturing sector; therefore, an increase in
the index represents growth in manufacturing output. The manufacturing sector is the
largest user of industry services. Consequently, as manufacturing output increases,
demand for long-distance freight trucking increases. The industrial production index is
expected to increase in 2016, representing a potential opportunity for the industry”.
 Threat
Lady Aries Express threats could be as followed Industry operators often implement
surcharges to mitigate fluctuations in the price of fuel. While demand for industry
services may decline due to rising prices, industry revenue increases in the short term
when operators implement additional fuel surcharges. However, in the long run, a decline
LADY ARIES EXPRESS BUSINESS PLAN 11
in diesel prices decreases costs and increases profit margins while lowering revenue. The
price of diesel is expected to remain unchanged in 2016, but its volatility poses a
potential threat to the industry. IBISWorld (2016)
Market Trends
The Department of Commerce reported that shipments of manufactured durable goods rose in
April to $22.7 billion. The amount being shipped has increased four of the last five months, as
companies continue to add to their inventories. Inventory levels for manufactured durable goods
increased 0.3% in April to reach a record $364.1 billion.
Target Market
The target market for Lady Aries Express will be any delivery service / broker that needs freight
to be pick/up or delivered to a specific area in the United States and Canada. Lady Aries Express
is licensed to handle both intra- State and Inter- State loads and we will work all over the United
States as over the road truck drivers. The industry’s that Lady Aries Express will service are:
 Manufacturers
 Any Merchant (Air Cargo, Port, Rail, Warehouse)
 Construction Companies
 Small Business
 Oil and Gas Industry
 The Lumber Industry
Competitive Advantage
Overall, the Freight Forwarding Brokerages and Agencies industry has a high level of
LADY ARIES EXPRESS BUSINESS PLAN 12
competition. Companies in the industry not only compete against one another, but they face
competition from shippers' in-house operations. IBISWorld, (2016)
Internal competition
An increasing number of industry operators are emphasizing customer service as an integral
function of their supply chain management processes. This growing attention to service has led
to innovation within the tracking portion of the business. Customers inquire as to the status of
their shipment; in response, industry operators have innovated new ways for customers to track
their package, including online freight tracking, which provides a real-time location and
estimated delivery date. IBISWorld, (2016)
External competition
For the most part, external competition stems from in-house operations of major shippers. While
this is not a major threat at the moment, this threat could increase as global networks grow and
consolidation continues. For example, major player United Postal Service is not only one of the
largest freight forwarders, but also the world's largest package delivery company. UPS's ability
to gain considerable market share in both industries highlights the growing threat of external
competition. IBISWorld, (2016)
