EnGenius Electron Series provides High Performance
Backhaul Solution for Surveillance during Hajj Period
Mekkah, Saudi Arabia:
The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia and a mandatory religious
duty for all Muslims. The number of pilgrims arriving each year has increased exponentially in recent
years to reach more than 2.2 million pilgrims from 188 countries in 2015, making it the largest religious
gathering in the world. To house pilgrims during their journey which spans 15 days, more than 100,000
air-conditioned tents are arranged in Mina, a neighborhood in Makkah Province, situated 5 kilometers
to the east of the Holy city covering approximately 20 km².
Making necessary arrangements each year for the growing number of pilgrims is of the utmost
importance to the government of Saudi Arabia in order to allow pilgrims to perform their various rites at
ease. For instance, 800 government officials are posted in Mina to help in directing pilgrims and
avoiding overcrowding situation. These security officials are supported by more than 200 CCTV
cameras that allow them to direct the flow of pilgrims in an effective manner. To support this video
surveillance and to provide government officials with the needed internet connectivity, a massive
internet infrastructure needed to be put in place.

The need: Support CCTV surveillance in a condensed and challenging environment:
The system integrator developed three key requirements for the wireless solution. The first
requirement was reliability, in fact, 24/7 CCTV monitoring is critical to operations in order to direct
pilgrims to the right areas and to avoid overcrowding. At the same time, with rising numbers of pilgrims
every year choosing to reside in the camps, the old deployed backhaul links were becoming saturated
as more IP cameras were installed. This meant that the infrastructure would require greater bandwidth
each year.
The second element was pricing where products needed to be cost-efficient so that the system
integrator can keep its pricing competitive. That is especially important as the network infrastructure
would be used only during the pilgrimage period.
Third, the wireless solution chosen would need to be both robust and reliable on the long term. That is
especially true as the external environment of the region is one of the most atrocious in the world with
temperatures reaching 50 degrees with dust storms and sandy winds not uncommon. Ultimately, these
three requirements were considered to be essential in choosing the right solutions in addition to
delivering superior throughput with efficiency.
The Solution: EnGenius Outdoor Electron Series
There were 25 camps in the area with 4 cameras each. Therefore, WCC installed 25
EnStation5 links to provide the infusion of bandwidth needed to support CCTV monitoring
and extend their range. The result was that every 4 cameras were supported by an
EnStation5. The devices were quickly deployed in strategic locations such as at entry points
or above gates to maximize the coverage range and to avoid any congested area. EnStation5
proved very effective with their high gain antennas as it provided the required extended
wireless network; in addition, their independent RF interface allowed them to accommodate

ultra high definition video over distances of 700 meters ensuring a very high quality of video
feed.
6 ENH900EXT were installed on the 5 Ghz channel on top of a 12 meter high tower
acting as the main access points to feed the command control center. Since the devices are
UV resistant, IP68-rated waterproof and dustproof device, it was guaranteed that they would
withstand the harsh environment of the region including prolonged exposure to sunlight and
remain operational over a long time. The installation also included 3 additional EnStation5 to
support 3 third-party 16MB cameras.

Results:
EnGenius network delivered fast and reliable Wi-Fi coverage to support the pilgrimage’s
network activities including the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. The Saudi
government has now access to huge amounts of bandwidth to support the rising numbers of
pilgrims and they can supply that bandwidth very cost-effectively.
The fact that EnGenius solution was 40% below the cost of other comparable solutions
offered by some of the world’s largest networking companies proved to be a key advantage. In
addition, the whole network can be quickly viewed, monitored and even reconfigured through
EZ Controller, free Access Point Management software.
