 Types of "Bentonite":
a. Hi-yield: polymers are
added to the "Bentonite"
to enhance the absorption.

Mud Drilling Fluid
• Polymers are: natural,
modified natural, biologic
and synthetic chemicals.
• Natural polymers like
starches and cellulose.
• Main usage of polymers is to:
• Build viscosity
• Add lubricity to water
• Can be either used by their
own or can be added to a
base drilling mud.
• Polymers:
1- Add lubricity
2- Prevent bit balling
3- Build viscosity
4- Control water loss

Benefits of using mud :
• Suspend soil.
• Stabilize the bore hole.
• Control the water loss.
• Reduce bit balling.
• Reduce rotary torque.
• Reduce friction on drill string.
• Used as a coolant.

property of
the mud to
measure its
thickness.

• Soil contents varies from one place to
another.
• Soil mainly consists different
particles size and chemical
composition.
• Soil composed of:
1- Clays

3- Silt

Mixing &Testing
1) steps of properly mix drilling fluid:
a) Check PH of the makeup water.
b) Add soda ash if needed.
c) Introduce the Bentonite to the mixer.
d) Allow the Bentonite to yield.
• Check Viscosity PH can be tested using
litmus paper.
• Proper PH level allows:
1- Fast yielding.
(allowing the bentonite platelets to absorb water at a high rate)
2- Fully yielding.
(proper level of PH allow the bentonite plates to grow up 15
times bigger)
3- Remains in suspension.
(prevent separation of platelets)
• Sandy loam:
mixture of sand
and clay, PAC
plus 50 viscosity.
• Clay: PHPA
plus 40
viscosity.
• Clay loam: a
mixture of clay
and sand,
PHPA plus 40-
45 viscosity.
How to set drilling Mud:
• Sand: PAC
plus 55
viscosity.
• Mixing unit: a tank where the
conditioned water is carefully mixed with
the bentonite platelets to produce mud.
• Storage tanks: where the bentonite is
stored after yielding is reached.
• Primary pump: a primary rise of the
mud pressure to be delivered to the main
pump.
• Main pump: a pump used to rise the
pressure finally to its desired value.

Terms and Definitions: • Marsh funnel: • A conical shaped funnel used to measure the viscosity of the mud which flow under a gravity head. • Viscosity: • An important property of the mud to measure its thickness.

Mixing &Testing 1) steps of properly mix drilling fluid: a) Check PH of the makeup water. b) Add soda ash if needed. c) Introduce the Bentonite to the mixer. d) Allow the Bentonite to yield. • Check Viscosity PH can be tested using litmus paper. • Proper PH level allows: 1- Fast yielding. (allowing the bentonite platelets to absorb water at a high rate) 2- Fully yielding. (proper level of PH allow the bentonite plates to grow up 15 times bigger) 3- Remains in suspension. (prevent separation of platelets)
