2. Task 1:
What activities should she use to teach “Light” to the class happening
on ground this year?
• Experiments illustrating concepts like Scattering of Light can be easily
conducted in the class. This will not only help kids in understanding
the topic well but also help kids like Neha, Arun, Leena and Riya to
remain involved throughout the class.
• Solar Eclipse and lunar Eclipse can also be illustrated by using a torch
as sun and two balls as Earth and moon.
• Moreover, various ICT tools can also be used in the class as kids
generally like animations and pay more attention to it.
3. During the class Neha and Arun are distracted by each other, and Riya
and Leena are non-participative. Which all are the potential places
might this happen?
Scenario Instances
Neha and Arun getting distracted • When a volunteer is answering/interacting with other kids.
• When a volunteer is writing on the board.
• When the two kids are sitting next to each other.
• When the topic is too theoretical, Arun tends to get bored and since
Neha is not a big fan of the subject, the two are likely to be distracted
by each other.
Riya and Leena are non-
participative
• The classes being held in the afternoon after the lunch hours may
make the kids feel sleepy.
• If the language used is too difficult, Riya would tend to get distracted.
• When not paid attention to, Leena may feel lonely and may become
restless.
• When the two kids would not be able to answer the questions asked,
they may feel low on confidence and may end up not listening to the
volunteer at all.
4. Child Name Behavior Actions that can be taken
Neha Does not like the subject and not
participative in class
• Identify if Neha likes any other subject.
• Inculcate the techniques that other ASVs teaching her are practicing
• Try to engage her in Q&A in between the class so that she does not lose track.
Leena Restless and does not sit in class after
30 minutes for the last 4 weeks
• Q&A and other practical activities(discussed for Science below) will keep Leena
engaged.
• She must be asked to read chapter in between the class so that she does not
feel restless.
• She must sit between Neha and Arun as they seem to befriend anyone easily
which will support Leena. At the same time, this will ensure that Neha and Arun
do not talk too much between the class.
Arun Likes the subject but gets bored often.
Prefers activities to theory.
• Practical activities should be undertaken in the class.
Riya Low on confidence and feels she cannot
learn anything, hence sits in a corner.
• She must be engaged via Q&A and reading activities. This will also help her in
adapting to English medium.
Rohan Fast learner and gets impatient when
you take time to support other children
• Rohan must be engaged with other activities like undertaking practical activity
or solving some questions while focusing on other children.
• He must also be encouraged to help Riya and Leena in studying the subject.
Write down the script / flow of the conversation which she can have
with the children during the instances you have identified above.
5. Task 2
As a mentor, what will you do to effectively and efficiently monitor
class consistency and quality?
• Volunteers’ Unavailability and Substitution:
• Volunteers can be asked to let know about their availability at least 3 days before the class.
This can be done by circulating Availability Form throughout the groups. Volunteers must be
asked to compulsorily fill the form.
• If a volunteer is unavailable, he/she must be asked to look for substitute.
• If a volunteer does not fill the form, we can reach out to them personally.
• In case, a volunteer is not available for more than 5 consecutive classes, the same must be
notified to fellows and reasons be thoroughly discussed and proper decision be taken.
• Classes starting late:
• Volunteers must be asked to be available for the class at least 10 minutes before the class.
• Similarly, we need to communicate to the shelter operations team to make sure the kids are
assembled at least 5 minutes before the class.
• Lesson Plans:
• Volunteers must be asked to fill out the lesson plan a day before the class.
• Similarly, volunteers must also be asked to manually fill out the portion of lesson plan
covered after the class before leaving the shelter.
6. How will you improve the bond/relationship between volunteers and
children?
• Some engagement activities can be conducted if the classes end
earlier than specified time.
• If possible, these should be group activities where a volunteer is
involved with a group of kids. This will help them know each other
well.
• ZH and Debrief can be used as a platform to let volunteers know the
tips and tricks to get involved with the kids on regular basis.
• In ZH, volunteers must be encouraged to share their classroom
experience and a thorough discussion can be done.
7. What support will you require from fellows?
• In case the class gets cancelled due to shelter engagement, the
fellows could support by arranging for alternative slots.
• For volunteers missing the classes too often, counselling can be done
with the support of fellows and further actions be taken.
• If by the end of 2 months, it seems that we are falling short of classes,
the mentors may support by arranging for extra classes.
• To engage with kids, certain practical examples need to be
demonstrated. Similarly, for teaching some concepts, audio visual aid
may be required. Logistics for these can be arranged with the support
from fellows and required permission be taken from shelter authority.
