Pentose phosphate pathway or Hexose monophosphate shunt. This pathway occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. It occurs as an alternative to glycolytic pathway. In this metabolic pathway glucose 6-phopshate act as both a substrate and end product of the pathway. For example, in this pathway ribose is one of the product produced that can be used to synthesize nucleotides, DNA and RNA.

Pentose phosphate pathway or
Occur in the cytosol
2. Pentose phosphate pathway
Also called hexose monophosphate shunt
More complex than glycolytic pathway
Three molecules of glucose 6-phosphate give
rise to three molecules of CO2 and three five-
carbon sugars.
As in glycolysis, oxidation is achieved by
dehydrogenation; but NADP+ and not NAD+ is
the hydrogen acceptor.
