Findings from a 2013 Pew Study Research study indicates that smartphone adoption among teens has increased exponentially with 78% of teens reporting having a cell phone with almost half (47%) owning smartphones. In 2014, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential (GCAPP) launched the gPower app – giving young people power in the palm of their hands to access reproductive and sexual health information at their fingertips. The app, available on the IOS and Android platform, is an innovative way for young people to learn about their legal rights to reproductive health care, learn about birth control options, locate and schedule clinic appointments and reminders, rate clinics, chat with a health educator, and share fun and engaging videos developed by other teens. \n\nThe purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how to incorporate technology and health to reach teens. We will showcase App’s capabilities and share preliminary data/findings.\n\n

Editor's Notes
Good morning and welcome!
GCAPP is proud to introduce our new mobile app, gPower, that puts the POWER of reproductive health in the hands of teens. This is a FREE app available on both Apple and Android devices.
Before we begin, we want to cover a few webinar logistics. You have all been placed in Mute mode on the phone line. You are able & very welcome to communicate with us throughout the webinar using either the Chat box or the Q&A box located on the right hand side of your screen. We’re hoping to make this webinar as lively as possible, so please do ask any questions that you have! We will communicate with you all regarding logistical & technical issues through the chat box & answer your questions on the phone at the end of the webinar.
We will be recording this webinar so that your colleagues who were not able to make it today can watch it at a later time. This recording will be available in about a week on our gpowernow.org website as well as posted on our Facebook account. It’s our hope that you can use this time to learn more about our FREE App and share what you learn with your friends, colleagues, and the youth you work with every day!
At GCAPP, we strongly believe in the power and potential of young people. Teens were involved in every step of the development of this app, giving feedback along the way to ensure its teen friendliness.
GCAPP believes that young people should know
their rights to sexual health services
where to access these services
what types of methods are available and what methods are most effective
And that young people should have a voice in sharing this knowledge and improving these services
The gPower app is available FREE at the iTunes and Google play stores for both apple and android devices. Once you download the app and open it for the first time, the screen you see will display information on Minor’s Rights. This screen details the rights that young people in GA have to reproductive health care without parental permission.
Every other time you open the app, the main menu screen will come up, but the minor’s rights information is still available from the main menu.
One of the very first things Teens shared with us was that they wanted information about Where to Go to get sexual health services and free condoms.
The screen shot we are looking at here is sexual health services, located under the Where to Go category. In this same category, you will find another link for searching for free condom locations.
Currently our app features over 200 Title Ten and other clinics that offer free or reduced cost reproductive services and/or condoms for teens.
You can search by city or zip code and you can choose the radius for your search. Once you have selected your search criteria, the app will list clinics near you, how far they are from you, give you the address as well as turn by turn directions, the phone number, and the ability to review the clinic after your experience there. A cool feature our teens were excited to see was the 1 click call to the clinic that allows you to click on the phone number and it will call the clinic’s number. They were also very enthusiastic about the ability to review the clinic and share their experience with their friends and peers.
The next Category, “Know How to Take Control” features a few pages- what to expect, what to ask, and what's my method. You are looking at a screen shot of the What to Expect page.
Duing our research for the app, we found that many teens are unaware of the typical process that happens when you go to a dr or clinic, like asking about sexual history, getting completely undressed, and doing a breast or testicular exam. Because they do not have this experience, they may get concerned or put off by these common practices if they don’t know they are typical for every patient. This list was put together to make teens feel more comfortable at their clinic visit and to reduce barriers to them going, coming back, and telling their friends about their experience.
The next category is called “What to Get”. It features both What to use and Where to Go.
The What to use page, shown here, lists all forms of Contraceptives that are teen friendly. After you select one (or a few!) that you are interested in learning more about, each contraceptive method selected will list information on what the contra is, how to use it properly, and whether or not it protects against STDs.
One of the final sections includes videos developed for and by the youth that we work with in various programs. The videos include information about LARCs, and demonstrations on both the Male Condom and the Female Condom.
Another video that we have posted here is the “Keep It Simple” video developed by two national partners, CAI and Healthy Teen Network on reducing barriers to teens going to seek reproductive health care services. It was written with Teen input and features a info-graphic or cartoon-like look that is appealing to youth and been very well received by our teen focus groups. There is also a Spanish version available.
It is very important to us at GCAPP to keep young people’s voices at the forefront of what we do. That is why we are excited to offer the “Speak Up” page, where teens can share the app with Friends (via FB, Twitter, email), they can provide feedback to improve the app, and they can rate the clinics they visit. This feature is also available in the clinic finder list.
The ability to rate the clinics is especially exciting because it really does put the power of the youth in the palm of their hands. Currently, the ratings will show up on our website gpowernow.org but in the next app update, they will appear on the clinic finder page so that teens can figure out which place in their area they want to go based on their peers’ experiences.
So what about Clinics? How can the FREE gPOWER app help you? How can your clinic utilize the app?
First, the App can help drive young people to your clinic through the clinic finder and the condom locator- because really-- Who doesn’t like free condoms??
Second, the app will guide the teen, once they have selected your clinic, by giving by turn directions from their phone. The app also provides reminders, either to visit the doctor or to take or check their contraceptives. Finally, teens can rate your clinic based on its teen friendliness, helping their peers find the best clinic for them, and driving more youth to your clinic- all of which helps your build revenue stream!
We know you all want to know more about the rating system- it was formulated to help the teens give structured and helpful feedback to you as a clinic. They can provide 1-5 star ratings on appointment availability, staff friendliness, services available, and the option of low or no cost services. There is also a place for them to provide additional feedback in the form of comments. The review page gives them the opportunity to use their voice to help make clinics better for other teens.
So why does this matter to you as a clinic? It helps your clinic become more well known by teens through the social media version of “word of mouth”. It can also help you get better as a teen friendly clinic. Their feedback will be available to you on gpowernow.org. In the next update of the app, we will have the ratings visible in the clinic finder page so that teens can find highly rated clinics near them. Clinics can check their ratings in real time, and if you are interested, GCAPP will be able to send the detailed feedback to you. This can help you become more teen friendly by planning professional development and staff capacity building based on the feedback you receive, all of which GCAPP can help you do! Contact anna@gcapp.org for more information on clinical staff professional development.
