Edgar Allan Poe Literary Influences
Edgar Allan Poe is an all–around well known American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe was most known for his poetry, short stories, and tales
of horror and mystery. He was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 and started writing at the age of 18. In 1836 he married his
13–year–old cousin, Virginia Clemm. He had many influences, styles, accomplishments. Poe also had such a huge impact on society. Though most
people see Poe's poems and writings as dark and twisted. Overall, he has inspired many and left a positive impact on the world. Edgar Allan Poe was
mostly influenced by Lord Byron. He was a great supporter of Lord Byron, who was also known as George Gordon. Byron was an English poet and
leading figure of Romanticism. "She Walks in Beauty" is a short lyrical poem written in 1813 by Lord Byron, and is one of his most famous works.
It is said to have been inspired by an event in Byron's life just like the volumes Poe wrote (Dictionary of American Biography). He was considered one

One of his most famous accomplishment is the publication of his poem "The Raven". The success of this poem was vast and may be said to have
first really made him famous (Dictionary of American Biography). Poe became a successful writer during his lifetime. In "The Portable Edgar Allan
Poe, J Gerald Kennedy explains that in "barely two decades Poe produced more than sixty poems, some seventy–odd tales, one completed novel, a long
prose poem of cosmological theory, and scores of essays and reviews" (XXIX Kennedy). Poe also changed literary culture by introducing
innovations. He did this by altering poetry, prose fiction, and critical works with new ideas (xxix Kennedy). Poe had a very successful magazine
career. Due to the inclusion of Poe's short stories and other works of literature in magazines, subscriptions increased greatly (Encyclopedia of World

Essay on The Life of Edgar Allan Poe
The life of Edgar Allan Poe, was stuffed with tragedies that all affected his art. From the very start of his writing career, he adored writing poems
for the ladies in his life. When he reached adulthood and came to the realization of how harsh life could be, his writing grew to be darker and more
disturbing, possibly as a result of his intense experimenting with opium and alcohol. His stories continue to be some of the most frightening stories
ever composed, because of this, some have considered this to be the reason behind these themes. Many historians and literature enthusiasts have
presumed his volatile love life as the source while others have credited it to his substance abuse. The influence of his one–of–a–kind writing is more

This book contained poems to girls in his life. At this stage Poe had not become fully aware of how much the abuse he had endured would affect
him. However, later in life, Poe would see the world as an abusive and cruel place. Frances Keeling Valentine Allan, Poe's foster Mother, was the
one positive influence in his life. She taught him history, reading and writing. He treasured these lessons immensely, and loved the kindness in
which his foster mother treated him. Frances would guard him from abuse whenever she could control her husband. Poe's close connection with
his foster mother made her death at such an early age severely overwhelming and difficult for him to handle. Overtime it is easy to see the gradual
darkening in his works which is directly correlated to the many deaths of his loved ones. After dropping out of West Point, Poe went to live with
his Aunt Maria Clemm. This was when he started writing prose and short stories. Poe received news that his brother, William Henry Leonard Poe
had died of tuberculosis. Even though Poe had not maintained much of a relationship with his brother, the news hit him hard. This was when he
wrote two works: "Ligeia" and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Poe wanted to write poems that would evoke emotions and produce a certain effect
in readers. He wanted to touch their hearts and allow readers to acknowledge their own sorrows. Poe then published "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven".
The main theme in "The Raven" is grief

Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe: A Brilliant Writer Edgar Allen Poe was one of the most brilliant writers of the nineteenth century. His short stories
and poems consist of horror, mortality, romantic struggle, and psychological concept. Poe's tales labeled him as a master in his study of instability of
self–control, the restrain of emotion, and access of feeling. His literary works were based on his personal background; therefore, many have similar
characteristics. Poe was a manic depressant, and frequently wrote while under the influence of morphine and alcohol. Poe gives an example of his
influenced writing in the story Ligeia. The story portrays Ligeia and her husband as opium addicts (Bonaparte, 236)....show more content...
For example, The Raven portrayed a man mourning over his lost wife, Lenore. Other critics believe his thoughts on romance are based on the
women that were involved in his lifetime. For instances, To Helen 1831, could define the relationship between Poe and his foster mother
(Davidson,32). The eye is a horrific symbol in some of Poe's stories. Poe's focus of the cat's eye in The Black Cat was to show the insanity of the
husband. Maybe Poe uses the focus of the eye because the eye is considered to be a window to our soul (Rose). Most of his stories have a continual
motive of obsessive–compulsive behavior. For instance, the narrator in the Tell Tale Heart was obsessed with " the beating of the hideous heart!" Or
in the Black Cat the character was obsessed with the killing the cat. In both of those stories the narrators was not afraid of the police, yet their
presence made the characters lose their insanity. That is a characteristic of someone that is compulsive, and will act without thinking of the
consequences. Poe's characters often recall visions that they see in dreams. Edward Davidson acknowledges, " Poe sets forth the dream not as a
refuge from the world's chiding, but as the region of understanding and "truth" of which this known world is a mere shadow"(Davidson 11). Poe rarely

How does E.A. Poe explore the themes of horror and obsession in his short stories?
In Edgar Allan Poe's short stories the black cat and The Tell Tale
Heart, both terrify the reader by making them believe they are the person going through these terrifying tales, as they believe they can hear the heart
pound under the floor boards as in The Tell Tale Heart.
Or they feel very cocky as showing the police round the basement 2 – 3 times until it all goes wrong, they feel it was them who committed these awful
crimes. In the Black cat short story, it is the madness of the characters that creates the perfect scary story, the man trying to kill the cat and eventually
killing his wife.

This effect is very useful and makes Edgar Allan Poe's work more popular. Also in Edgar Allan Poe's horror type of writing the effect has more than
in a any other story would of, but in a horror story it would have more effect than in any other type of genre possible. That may be why he is
considered the best at ever writing horror. Poe's own life is reflected in his work, most of his characters are crazy and unsociable, this is the same
with Edgar Allan Poe. He was a alcoholic, was sick in the head and had a hard life with his mother dying when he was two. The characters in Edgar
Allan Poe's work are a lot like him, they are all at least slightly crazy and unsociable and in some cases they are overly crazy and unsociable. There
are many example but the narrator in The Black Cat is very unsociable he first seems normal and loves his pets but ends up hating them and killing his
wife and favourite cat. There is a clear connection when in the
Tell Tale Heart the narrator seems very careful and deceptive about everything and being very unsociable with the police but being cocky at the same
time. You know he is scared because he tells you. Edgar
Allan Poe portrays this to show the horrors in his everyday life that normal people would not of normally of known to of existed.
When the narrator says " TRUE! – Nervous – very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?

Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was born at 33 Hollis Street, Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. Poe's parents were struggling actors. His father deserted
him, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was three years old. Young Edgar was taken in by a wealthy tobacco exporter by the name of John
Allan, from whom he took his middle name. Most of his early life was lived in Richmond, Virginia, with the exception of a five–year period when the
Allan family lived in England. His life in England was described as rather uneventful. Poe, even in his early years, had a proficiency for writing
poetry. When he moved back to Virginia, Poe grew attached to young girl in his neighborhood named Sarah Royster. They frequently visited,

During the next few years, Poe bounced from Philadelphia to New York holding various editor positions. It was during this time that he wrote many of
his most famous works.
The year 1846 marked the beginning of Poe's decline. He was involved in personal scandals with two female literary "groupies". When Virginia Poe
died in 1947, Poe collapsed. He was found unconscious on a Baltimore street in 1949. A brief obituary reported that Poe had died of "congestion of the
brain" (Regan 3). Poe's turbulent childhood, troubled mid–life, unusual relationships, and hardships were reflected in his various works.
The student in Poe's most famous poem, The Raven, displays similar attitudes that Poe displayed during his life. The plot in The Raven is a rather
simple one. A young student is found weeping over his beloved deceased mistress. He suddenly hears a tapping at the window. He finds it is a raven
that he figures is looking for shelter from the rainy storm taking place outside. He learns that the raven can only speak one word, "nevermore". The
student knows that is all the raven can say, but yet he continues to ask it questions that will receive a negative answer. The young man only gets the
response, nevermore. Poe's poem demonstrates that he believes humans have an intimate need for self–torture. It is a reflective story of a man seeking

The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe Essay
Poe's Unsolved Mystery
On September 28, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe arrived in Baltimore, Maryland to take a train to Philadelphia. What was supposed to be a brief stop over
turned into an eternity. What caused the death of "the father of the detective story"? The possible scenarios surrounding the events that lead up to his
death are the cause of many magazine articles, books, and even recent medical studies. Although no one really knows what happened to Edgar Alan
Poe, there are over twenty different theories about what might have happened to him. I will discuss the four major theories of what Edgar Allan Poe's
cause of death was.

They rekindled this old flame and before long the two were planning to be married. The one condition set by Elmira was that Poe could not drink
any alcohol. He readily agreed to her conditions and even joined the Richmond temperance society, to prove his dedication to staying sober. The two
set the date of the wedding for October 17th to give Poe time to go Philadelphia to conduct some business and then to New York to pick up his
mother–in–law so she could attend the ceremony. He left Elmira's house on the night before his journey and promised to write her as soon as he
reached New York. That was the last time she saw him. On September 27, Poe left Richmond, VA by boat to go to Baltimore where he would take a
train to complete his journey. This is where the mystery begins. No one knows what happened to Poe from September 27 to October 3rd, the day he
was found semiconscious and dressed in some else's clothing outside Gunner's Hall in Baltimore. After alerting his friend, Dr. Snodgrass, of his illness,
Poe was rushed to Washing College Hospital where, according to his attending doctor, Dr. Moran, he had:
Tremor of the limbs, and at first a busy, but not violent or active delirium –constant talking – and vacant converse with spectral and imaginary objects
on the walls. His face was pale and his whole person drenched in perspiration (Walsh 41).

The Raven made Poe highly praised but not on the financial side, which conceivably contributed to the death of his young wife 2 years later, yet still
remains one of the most famous poems ever written. Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe , born August 15, 1822, was Poe's first cousin and a scandalous
13–year–old when she became his bride. Poe acquired a special license and confirming her alleged age of 21 years was an affidavit signed by a man by
the name of Thomas W. Cleland. As appalling as the idea of a teenager married to a 27–year–old, full–grown man, it was not as startling as one would
think, given the fact that he had a seemingly more brother and sister, than husband and wife, relationship with her.
Marie Bonaparte has read many of Edgar Allan Poe's works as autobiographical and have concluded that Virginia died a virgin because she and her
husband never consummated their marriage, but there are friends of Poe who have suggested that he waited until she was at least sixteen before
taking her maidenhood. Nonetheless, Poe and his wife had a happy marriage apparent by their obvious devotion to one another; hers an almost
idolization, his a worshiping sort of affection. Devastatingly, Virginia contracted tuberculosis in January 1842 and subsequently died after 5 years of
the disease in January 1847, at the age of 24 in the family's cottage outside New York

Humanities Expression Project: Research Paper The artist that I chose to write my research paper on is the great Edgar Allen Poe, ever since I was
a middle schooler, I've always been so fascinated with his work and what truly makes Edgar Allen Poe himself. I find his stories and poems to be
absolutely breathtaking, and well thought out and as a result very expressive of human emotions, whether through mysterious storytelling or through
macabre writings, he never ceases to amaze. In our class lectures, we discussed four themes and how they are expressed and shown in life, and the
themes go as listed: Identity, Morality, Religion, and last but not least– we have love and family. As one of my favorite Poets, second being
Shakespeare, I can openly express how those themes both connect and show how they align with Poe through his art. In terms of Identity, Poe was an
American writer and poet who was known for his marvelous short stories and poems. According to www.biography.com, Poe was born on the 19th of
January in the year of 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up, Poe never had a relationship with his mother or father, his mother – died from

Edgar Allen Poe is a writer of the 1800's. He has written many classics and has a unique style. Edgar fits into a gothic romance style that was
prevalent at the time of his writing. Science at the time was making leaps and bounds and often scientists were immoral and hypocritical. This is
reflected in Edgar's sonnet to science were science has been destroying all that Edgar finds wonderful in the world. Edgar has a tough life with many
losses which is also reflected in his writing and the sonnet to science. To understand Edgar and his writing you have to know his history and the history

The poem seems to be an internal questioning by Poe and the questions are also addressed to the public. He is challenging the readers to question
science and what they think of science and the apparent truths that it reveals.
Poe also was an editor of many magazines and strove to establish and publish his own magazine. His struggle to make his own magazine on his own
terms made him many enemies. Poe wanted to go against the growing capitalism of literature. Literature during his time was becoming capitalized
because of increased availability of printers and a large literate public who was willing to buy books for entertainment. This rebellion against
capitalism in literature put Poe up against many well established ideas, one of which is science and mainly Darwinism which many capitalist feed off
of as proof that capitalism is the natural order of things. So, when Poe questions science in his sonnet he is questioning Darwinism capitalism and all
the forces that he struggles with in his daily life. He is also prompting the public to question these institutions.
Edgar Allan Poe is also a very rational writer. He writes in a very planned manner and made lots of rational critics of other writers. Because his is
rational he may be questioning in himself in the sonnet. The sonnet questions whether science and reason destroy what is fantastic and supernatural in
the world. The start of the poem touts the amazing revelation of

decidedly dark and often gothic poems and stories, stories such as "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Telltale Heart" "The Cask of

madness, incest, murder and revenge. While this reputation is certainly well earned there is another side of Poe that is not quite so obvious. Poe was
also a master of humor, especially in the use of parody and satire. One might ask how is it that a writer with such an inclination towards the darker side

Furthermore, though seeming deranged, Poe wrote stories accurate to his generation yet his motives remain unclear. As his writing improved, he used
this connective pattern between his life experiences and fiction. Hoping for a new life, Poe joined the army but carelessly mishandled the job and
somehow managed getting dismissed. Thus, unemployed he remained, but nevertheless, continued writing and publishing short stories. Feeling
overwhelmed, Poe decided to reconnect with his biological family, confiding in his aunt Maria and cousin Virginia whom he later married. Many
deemed the relationship strange whereas others assumed Virginia was merely a source of comfort. Career wise, Poe was somewhat accredited until
the publishing of the renowned poem, "The Raven" by which he received great recognition. "The Raven", being Poe's most eminent poem, features a
narrator preoccupied by thoughts of his deceased wife Lenore. Prior to Poe writing this, Virginia became ill and Lenore is furthermore utilized as her
indirect symbol. Obviously, there is a formative pattern within Poe's short stories seeing that Virginia is one recurring feature. When reading Poe's
work, no assumption is necessary, as he makes his love for Virginia exceptionally clear much like the narrator's love for Lenore. At the end of the
poem, the narrator states, "And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting on the pallid bust just

His writing instantly became dark and dreary, but he used the death of his wife as inspiration to write of death and love and reunion. His worked
continued to grow, and people began to notice it. But it was not until after his death on October 7, 1849 that his writing was given the recognition that
it deserved (Hart 521–2). Throughout his short–lived life, Edgar Allan Poe compiled a collection of literature, poetry, short fiction, and literary criticism.
Some people think that some of Poe's criticism has endured more than his short fiction and poetry. Hart writes, "There have been strongly divergent
evaluations of Poe's literary significance, from Emerson's dismissal of him as the 'the jingle man' and Lowell's 'three–fifths genus and two fifths, sheer
fudge' to Yeat's declaration, 'always and for all the lands a great lyric poet" (522). The criticism of his poetry and writing was a direct criticism on his
theories, as he implemented his theories in all of his writing. For example, Poe believed that length was extremely important. Poe once wrote that, "If
any literary work is too long to read at one sitting, we must be content to dispense with the immensely important effect derivable from unity of

Neither of his first two collections attracted much attention. "Poe married his 13–year–old cousin Virginia Clemn. She burst a blood vessel in 1842,
and remained a virtual worthless until her death from tuberculosis five years later" (online–literature, pg. 2). He addressed the famous poem "Annabel
Lee" to her in 1849. In 1836, he received an editorship at The Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. Around this time, Edgar began using
drugs and dinking very heavily. He even showed up at events drunk. Still, he was writing incredible stories and poems. Poe received a large
amount of recognition, not only for his poetry and fiction, but as an exceptional literary critic. He also achieved popular success, especially
following the publication of his poem "The Raven." Edgar had fallen for Merrie next and she died of brain cancer. After a period in which he was
involved in various romantic affairs, Poe planned to remarry, but in late September, 1849 he arrived in Baltimore for reasons unknown. "Poe suffered
from bouts of depression and madness, and he attempted suicide in 1848" (online–literature, pg. 2). In early October he was discovered nearly
unconscious in a Baltimore gutter. Edgar was taken to Washington College Hospital. Some say that Poe called out the name "Reynolds" on the night
before he died. He died on early in the morning of October 7, 1849. He was buried in the yard of Baltimore's Wesminster Presbyterian Church. People

Edgar Allen Poe
Edgar Allen Poe's life was bombarded with misery, financial problems, and death but he still managed to become a world–renowned writer.
Although he attended the most prestigious of schools he was often looked over as a writer and poet during his career. His stories were odd and
misunderstood during their time. However, now they are loved a read by millions.
On January 19, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts at a lodging house. His parents David and Elizabeth Poe were professional
actors who toured with a theatrical company. On December
8, 1811 his mother died of tuberculosis in Richmond, Virginia
(Introduction). In July of 1810 Edgar's father vanished and it is speculated that he may have...show more content...
John Allan did not send Poe enough money so he decided to be dismissed from West Point and was on
March 6, 1831. Poe then moved to Baltimore to live with his widowed
Aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter, Virginia (Poe Chronology).
John Allan died in 1834 and moreover Poe received no inheritance. Poe then turned to journalism and began to write for the Richmond based
Southern Literary Messenger. By the end of the year, Poe, who had moved to Richmond with Virginia and Mrs. Clemm, was named editor in chief. In
May of 1836 he secretly married Virginia, his first cousin, who was then not quite fourteen years of age (Poe Chronology). In 1837
Poe resigned from the Southern Literary Messenger and moved his family to New York then to Philadelphia where he began to write for Gentlemen
Magazine in 1839. He once again had problems with his publisher so he sought an editorial position at Graham's Magazine. Poe once again was
seeking a higher salary and was dismissed by the publisher, but this time on better terms (Introduction).
During all of Poe's editorial positions he forwarded his own career and in 1843 he began to publish his own works one of which including
The Tell–Tale Heart. He began to also gain fame but could not profit off of his works because of the unfavorable copyright laws. In 1845
Poe published his most famous poem The Raven which was extremely successful (Introduction). He also became the sole owner of The

Edgar Allan Poe Literary Influences

  • 1. Edgar Allan Poe Literary Influences Edgar Allan Poe is an all–around well known American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe was most known for his poetry, short stories, and tales of horror and mystery. He was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 and started writing at the age of 18. In 1836 he married his 13–year–old cousin, Virginia Clemm. He had many influences, styles, accomplishments. Poe also had such a huge impact on society. Though most people see Poe's poems and writings as dark and twisted. Overall, he has inspired many and left a positive impact on the world. Edgar Allan Poe was mostly influenced by Lord Byron. He was a great supporter of Lord Byron, who was also known as George Gordon. Byron was an English poet and leading figure of Romanticism. "She Walks in Beauty" is a short lyrical poem written in 1813 by Lord Byron, and is one of his most famous works. It is said to have been inspired by an event in Byron's life just like the volumes Poe wrote (Dictionary of American Biography). He was considered one of the greatest British poets who remains...show more content... One of his most famous accomplishment is the publication of his poem "The Raven". The success of this poem was vast and may be said to have first really made him famous (Dictionary of American Biography). Poe became a successful writer during his lifetime. In "The Portable Edgar Allan Poe, J Gerald Kennedy explains that in "barely two decades Poe produced more than sixty poems, some seventy–odd tales, one completed novel, a long prose poem of cosmological theory, and scores of essays and reviews" (XXIX Kennedy). Poe also changed literary culture by introducing innovations. He did this by altering poetry, prose fiction, and critical works with new ideas (xxix Kennedy). Poe had a very successful magazine career. Due to the inclusion of Poe's short stories and other works of literature in magazines, subscriptions increased greatly (Encyclopedia of World Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on The Life of Edgar Allan Poe The life of Edgar Allan Poe, was stuffed with tragedies that all affected his art. From the very start of his writing career, he adored writing poems for the ladies in his life. When he reached adulthood and came to the realization of how harsh life could be, his writing grew to be darker and more disturbing, possibly as a result of his intense experimenting with opium and alcohol. His stories continue to be some of the most frightening stories ever composed, because of this, some have considered this to be the reason behind these themes. Many historians and literature enthusiasts have presumed his volatile love life as the source while others have credited it to his substance abuse. The influence of his one–of–a–kind writing is more than...show more content... This book contained poems to girls in his life. At this stage Poe had not become fully aware of how much the abuse he had endured would affect him. However, later in life, Poe would see the world as an abusive and cruel place. Frances Keeling Valentine Allan, Poe's foster Mother, was the one positive influence in his life. She taught him history, reading and writing. He treasured these lessons immensely, and loved the kindness in which his foster mother treated him. Frances would guard him from abuse whenever she could control her husband. Poe's close connection with his foster mother made her death at such an early age severely overwhelming and difficult for him to handle. Overtime it is easy to see the gradual darkening in his works which is directly correlated to the many deaths of his loved ones. After dropping out of West Point, Poe went to live with his Aunt Maria Clemm. This was when he started writing prose and short stories. Poe received news that his brother, William Henry Leonard Poe had died of tuberculosis. Even though Poe had not maintained much of a relationship with his brother, the news hit him hard. This was when he wrote two works: "Ligeia" and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Poe wanted to write poems that would evoke emotions and produce a certain effect in readers. He wanted to touch their hearts and allow readers to acknowledge their own sorrows. Poe then published "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven". The main theme in "The Raven" is grief Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Edgar Allen Poe Essay Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe: A Brilliant Writer Edgar Allen Poe was one of the most brilliant writers of the nineteenth century. His short stories and poems consist of horror, mortality, romantic struggle, and psychological concept. Poe's tales labeled him as a master in his study of instability of self–control, the restrain of emotion, and access of feeling. His literary works were based on his personal background; therefore, many have similar characteristics. Poe was a manic depressant, and frequently wrote while under the influence of morphine and alcohol. Poe gives an example of his influenced writing in the story Ligeia. The story portrays Ligeia and her husband as opium addicts (Bonaparte, 236)....show more content... For example, The Raven portrayed a man mourning over his lost wife, Lenore. Other critics believe his thoughts on romance are based on the women that were involved in his lifetime. For instances, To Helen 1831, could define the relationship between Poe and his foster mother (Davidson,32). The eye is a horrific symbol in some of Poe's stories. Poe's focus of the cat's eye in The Black Cat was to show the insanity of the husband. Maybe Poe uses the focus of the eye because the eye is considered to be a window to our soul (Rose). Most of his stories have a continual motive of obsessive–compulsive behavior. For instance, the narrator in the Tell Tale Heart was obsessed with " the beating of the hideous heart!" Or in the Black Cat the character was obsessed with the killing the cat. In both of those stories the narrators was not afraid of the police, yet their presence made the characters lose their insanity. That is a characteristic of someone that is compulsive, and will act without thinking of the consequences. Poe's characters often recall visions that they see in dreams. Edward Davidson acknowledges, " Poe sets forth the dream not as a refuge from the world's chiding, but as the region of understanding and "truth" of which this known world is a mere shadow"(Davidson 11). Poe rarely expresses Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Edgar Allan Poe Essay Edgar Allan Poe Essay How does E.A. Poe explore the themes of horror and obsession in his short stories? In Edgar Allan Poe's short stories the black cat and The Tell Tale Heart, both terrify the reader by making them believe they are the person going through these terrifying tales, as they believe they can hear the heart pound under the floor boards as in The Tell Tale Heart. Or they feel very cocky as showing the police round the basement 2 – 3 times until it all goes wrong, they feel it was them who committed these awful crimes. In the Black cat short story, it is the madness of the characters that creates the perfect scary story, the man trying to kill the cat and eventually killing his wife. Poe creates an atmosphere...show more content... This effect is very useful and makes Edgar Allan Poe's work more popular. Also in Edgar Allan Poe's horror type of writing the effect has more than in a any other story would of, but in a horror story it would have more effect than in any other type of genre possible. That may be why he is considered the best at ever writing horror. Poe's own life is reflected in his work, most of his characters are crazy and unsociable, this is the same with Edgar Allan Poe. He was a alcoholic, was sick in the head and had a hard life with his mother dying when he was two. The characters in Edgar Allan Poe's work are a lot like him, they are all at least slightly crazy and unsociable and in some cases they are overly crazy and unsociable. There are many example but the narrator in The Black Cat is very unsociable he first seems normal and loves his pets but ends up hating them and killing his wife and favourite cat. There is a clear connection when in the Tell Tale Heart the narrator seems very careful and deceptive about everything and being very unsociable with the police but being cocky at the same time. You know he is scared because he tells you. Edgar Allan Poe portrays this to show the horrors in his everyday life that normal people would not of normally of known to of existed. When the narrator says " TRUE! – Nervous – very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?

His father deserted him, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was three years old. Young Edgar was taken in by a wealthy tobacco exporter by the name of John Allan, from whom he took his middle name. Most of his early life was lived in Richmond, Virginia, with the exception of a five–year period when the Allan family lived in England. His life in England was described as rather uneventful. Poe, even in his early years, had a proficiency for writing poetry. When he moved back to Virginia, Poe grew attached to young girl in his neighborhood named Sarah Royster. It was during this time that he wrote many of his most famous works. The year 1846 marked the beginning of Poe's decline. He was involved in personal scandals with two female literary "groupies". When Virginia Poe died in 1947, Poe collapsed. He was found unconscious on a Baltimore street in 1949. A brief obituary reported that Poe had died of "congestion of the brain" (Regan 3). Poe's turbulent childhood, troubled mid–life, unusual relationships, and hardships were reflected in his various works. The student in Poe's most famous poem, The Raven, displays similar attitudes that Poe displayed during his life. The plot in The Raven is a rather simple one. A young student is found weeping over his beloved deceased mistress. He suddenly hears a tapping at the window. He finds it is a raven that he figures is looking for shelter from the rainy storm taking place outside. He learns that the raven can only speak one word, "nevermore". The student knows that is all the raven can say, but yet he continues to ask it questions that will receive a negative answer. The young man only gets the response, nevermore. Poe's poem demonstrates that he believes humans have an intimate need for self–torture. It is a reflective story of a man seeking self–torture Get more content on HelpWriting.net

What was supposed to be a brief stop over turned into an eternity. What caused the death of "the father of the detective story"? The possible scenarios surrounding the events that lead up to his death are the cause of many magazine articles, books, and even recent medical studies. Although no one really knows what happened to Edgar Alan Poe, there are over twenty different theories about what might have happened to him. I will discuss the four major theories of what Edgar Allan Poe's cause of death was. First one needs to know some background information on Edgar Allan Poe. The one condition set by Elmira was that Poe could not drink any alcohol. He readily agreed to her conditions and even joined the Richmond temperance society, to prove his dedication to staying sober. The two set the date of the wedding for October 17th to give Poe time to go Philadelphia to conduct some business and then to New York to pick up his mother–in–law so she could attend the ceremony. He left Elmira's house on the night before his journey and promised to write her as soon as he reached New York. That was the last time she saw him. On September 27, Poe left Richmond, VA by boat to go to Baltimore where he would take a train to complete his journey. This is where the mystery begins. No one knows what happened to Poe from September 27 to October 3rd, the day he was found semiconscious and dressed in some else's clothing outside Gunner's Hall in Baltimore. After alerting his friend, Dr. Snodgrass, of his illness, Poe was rushed to Washing College Hospital where, according to his attending doctor, Dr. Moran, he had: Tremor of the limbs, and at first a busy, but not violent or active delirium –constant talking – and vacant converse with spectral and imaginary objects on the walls. His face was pale and his whole person drenched in perspiration (Walsh 41). On Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In Massachusetts on the 19th day of January in the year 1809, Edgar Poe was born to actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and actor David Poe Junior, making him an older brother to Rosalie Poe, and a younger one to William Henry Leonard Poe. Poe may, perchance, have been named after a character in the play that his parents were performing that year. The Raven made Poe highly praised but not on the financial side, which conceivably contributed to the death of his young wife 2 years later, yet still remains one of the most famous poems ever written. Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe , born August 15, 1822, was Poe's first cousin and a scandalous 13–year–old when she became his bride. Poe acquired a special license and confirming her alleged age of 21 years was an affidavit signed by a man by the name of Thomas W. Cleland. As appalling as the idea of a teenager married to a 27–year–old, full–grown man, it was not as startling as one would think, given the fact that he had a seemingly more brother and sister, than husband and wife, relationship with her. Marie Bonaparte has read many of Edgar Allan Poe's works as autobiographical and have concluded that Virginia died a virgin because she and her husband never consummated their marriage, but there are friends of Poe who have suggested that he waited until she was at least sixteen before taking her maidenhood. Nonetheless, Poe and his wife had a happy marriage apparent by their obvious devotion to one another; hers an almost idolization, his a worshiping sort of affection. Devastatingly, Virginia contracted tuberculosis in January 1842 and subsequently died after 5 years of the disease in January 1847, at the age of 24 in the family's cottage outside New York Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Humanities Expression Project : Edgar Allen Poe Humanities Expression Project: Research Paper The artist that I chose to write my research paper on is the great Edgar Allen Poe, ever since I was a middle schooler, I've always been so fascinated with his work and what truly makes Edgar Allen Poe himself. I find his stories and poems to be absolutely breathtaking, and well thought out and as a result very expressive of human emotions, whether through mysterious storytelling or through macabre writings, he never ceases to amaze. In our class lectures, we discussed four themes and how they are expressed and shown in life, and the themes go as listed: Identity, Morality, Religion, and last but not least– we have love and family. As one of my favorite Poets, second being Shakespeare, I can openly express how those themes both connect and show how they align with Poe through his art. In terms of Identity, Poe was an American writer and poet who was known for his marvelous short stories and poems. According to www.biography.com, Poe was born on the 19th of January in the year of 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Growing up, Poe never had a relationship with his mother or father, his mother – died from tuberculosis and his father, abandoned him and his siblings at a very young age. Edgar fits into a gothic romance style that was prevalent at the time of his writing. Science at the time was making leaps and bounds and often scientists were immoral and hypocritical. This is reflected in Edgar's sonnet to science were science has been destroying all that Edgar finds wonderful in the world. The poem seems to be an internal questioning by Poe and the questions are also addressed to the public. He is challenging the readers to question science and what they think of science and the apparent truths that it reveals. Poe also was an editor of many magazines and strove to establish and publish his own magazine. His struggle to make his own magazine on his own terms made him many enemies. Poe wanted to go against the growing capitalism of literature. Literature during his time was becoming capitalized because of increased availability of printers and a large literate public who was willing to buy books for entertainment. This rebellion against capitalism in literature put Poe up against many well established ideas, one of which is science and mainly Darwinism which many capitalist feed off of as proof that capitalism is the natural order of things. So, when Poe questions science in his sonnet he is questioning Darwinism capitalism and all the forces that he struggles with in his daily life. He is also prompting the public to question these institutions. Edgar Allan Poe is also a very rational writer. He writes in a very planned manner and made lots of rational critics of other writers. Because his is rational he may be questioning in himself in the sonnet. The sonnet questions whether science and reason destroy what is fantastic and supernatural in the world. When he was little, his father abandoned him and his family, and his mother later died or illness. He was adopted by the Allan family where he was dearly loved by his foster mother, but not so much his foster father. Later in life, many members of his family had died, and he married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia, when when he was 25. She had later died of tuberculosis, which set Poe over the edge. He started to get drunk more often and gamble more. In Edgar Allan Poe's stories, he includes love connections, loss of loved ones, and the inevitability of death, which all reflect on to his own life. In many of Edgar Allan Poe's crazy and famous stories, love is an important role in creating the plot. Most of his short stories and poems include strong love connections with women, which is what he had with his wife Virginia, a strong love connection. In his poem, "Annabel Lee", in states, "But we loved with a love that was more than love–" (Poe) This piece of text is clearly saying that the narrator and Annabel Lee were deeply in love, just like Poe and Virginia, who also had a very strong love that couldn't be separated. Also in "Annabel Lee", it indicates, "But our love it was stronger by far than the love of those who are older than we–" (Poe) This is showing that the narrator and Annabel Lee loved eachother so much Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This morning, the woods were filled with the sheer weight of ice. Today is December 21st and the first day of winter. Today is also the day Poe lost his family for which we are visiting the graveyard. We do this every year. My neighborEdgar Allan Poe is a famous writer. It has been about two years since his family has passed away in a road accident. Ever since then Poe has been kind enough to take care of an old man like me. We live in a small town outside of Rockville. Writers are notorious for their strange behavior but lately, Poe has been acting exceptionally bizarre. I can't really complain about Poe after all he is taking care of me. Everybody thinks Poe has become a psycho after his family passed away but I don't agree with that. I just think Poe is going through a phase of his life. I had to go through it once as well when my wife passed away. Still, something doesn't feel right about Poe. It all began that day when Poe started to hear sounds. At the start, I didn't take it as seriously as I should have but clearly, Poe is getting worse. I don't know what to do or what to say. The thoughts of Poe becoming a madman looped around in my mind until there was no room for anything else. Poe has been my only family. I can't lose Poe too. He also wrote many others mostly involving rather macabre, dark topics and characters as well as heavy themes such as insanity, madness, incest, murder and revenge. Among Mr. Blackwood's advice is to find a situation or "such a scrape as no one ever got into before" to get herself in and then proceed to write about the "sensations" she is experiencing (Poe 341). In the process of writing these sensations she is to use a certain few literary techniques in order to ensure her writing is of Blackwood quality. Some of the situations he uses as past examples are a man who is buried alive and writes about it as well as the man who was baked in an oven and also wrote about it. Poe is essentially the degrading stature of the magazine by comparing the articles it prints to these idiotic stories and his rather pompous and pretentious character who is totally serious as he gives her this advice, much as is the real life magazine is with regards to how ostentatious its writers are. The techniques that Mr. Blackwood gives to Zenobia are actual strategies and common techniques used by many writers in different styles of writing. Thus, unemployed he remained, but nevertheless, continued writing and publishing short stories. Feeling overwhelmed, Poe decided to reconnect with his biological family, confiding in his aunt Maria and cousin Virginia whom he later married. Many deemed the relationship strange whereas others assumed Virginia was merely a source of comfort. Career wise, Poe was somewhat accredited until the publishing of the renowned poem, "The Raven" by which he received great recognition. "The Raven", being Poe's most eminent poem, features a narrator preoccupied by thoughts of his deceased wife Lenore. Prior to Poe writing this, Virginia became ill and Lenore is furthermore utilized as her indirect symbol. Obviously, there is a formative pattern within Poe's short stories seeing that Virginia is one recurring feature. When reading Poe's work, no assumption is necessary, as he makes his love for Virginia exceptionally clear much like the narrator's love for Lenore. At the end of the poem, the narrator states, "And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting on the pallid bust just Get more content on HelpWriting.net

But it was not until after his death on October 7, 1849 that his writing was given the recognition that it deserved (Hart 521–2). Throughout his short–lived life, Edgar Allan Poe compiled a collection of literature, poetry, short fiction, and literary criticism. Some people think that some of Poe's criticism has endured more than his short fiction and poetry. Hart writes, "There have been strongly divergent evaluations of Poe's literary significance, from Emerson's dismissal of him as the 'the jingle man' and Lowell's 'three–fifths genus and two fifths, sheer fudge' to Yeat's declaration, 'always and for all the lands a great lyric poet" (522). The criticism of his poetry and writing was a direct criticism on his theories, as he implemented his theories in all of his writing. For example, Poe believed that length was extremely important. Poe once wrote that, "If any literary work is too long to read at one sitting, we must be content to dispense with the immensely important effect derivable from unity of impression– for, if two sittings is required, the affairs of the world interfere, and like everything like totality is at once destroyed" (Hart 129).
