William Butler Yeats’ The Magi Essay
William Butler Yeats' The Magi
Briefly stated, William Butler Yeats' The Magi is a poem about people who, upon reaching old age, or perhaps just older age, turn to God and the
spiritual world for fulfillment and happiness. We are told in the footnote to this poem that, after writing The Dolls,Yeatslooked up into the blue sky
and imagined that he could see "stiff figures in procession". Perhaps after imagining these figures, Yeats debated within himself whom these pictures
could represent. Yeats then went on to write The Magi, a poem which is full of symbolism, aliterary technique that he greatly valued.
In the first two lines of the poem, Yeats writes "Now as at all times I can see in the mind's eye, / In their stiff,...show more content...
In line five, which is just bursting with symbolism, Yeats writes, "And all their helms of silver hovering side by side". This line further promotes the
idea that these people have achieved great success, at least great material success, in their lives. A helm can be defined as "a tiller or wheel for
controlling a ship's rudder" (Urdang, 261). Yeats is saying in this line that these people allowed silver, or money, to control their lives completely
–the
things they did, the places they went, the decisions they made, and so on.
The last three lines of the poem, "And all their eyes still fixed, hoping to find once more, /Being by Calvary's turbulence unsatisfied, / The
uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor," are the strongest. Yeats is saying that, although they are unhappy with their lives, they have not given up
hope. They still feel that they can find perfect happiness. They realize that this happiness cannot be found in the lives they are currently living. Yeats
often used the image of the cross or of Christ's crucifixion to symbolize things such as "discord, incompleteness, opposition, mortality, temporality"
(Ellmann and O'Clair, 135). With this line, he is saying that these people have given up hope that they will ever be happy in their hectic, strife–filled,
material worlds. They are now turning to God in order to find some sense of peace and fulfillment in their lives. The

The Feminine in William Butler Yeats' Poetry William Butler Yeats had a long history of involvement with women. He was deeply affected by all
types of women; from love interests with Mrs. Olivia Shakespear, Maud Gonne and her adopted daughter Iseult, to a partnership and friendship with
Lady Gregory, to marriage with Georgie Hyde–Lees, and finally the birth of his own daughter Anne Yeats. These relationships are reflected in his
poetry on many different and multi–layered levels. The mentions of women in his work gives the readers some historical content as well as show the
development of his feminine idea. As different as his many relationships with women were, so was his reflection of them in his writing. Yeats took

He appreciates them in his poem "Friends" by writing, "Now must I these three praise – / Three women that have wrought / What joy is in my days"
(CP 124). The comparison of his relationship with Maud Gonne to that of his wife, however, reveals something deeper in his poetry. Although with
Maud Gonne Yeats experienced repeated rejection, she was his muse and his beloved. Gonne was unattainable and this tortured Yeats: "Why should I
blame her that she filled my days / With misery" (CP 91). He often referred to her as a figure of mythology, usually Helen of Troy; thus creating a
mysterious image. Her love was untouchable and her "beauty like a tightened bow, a kind / That is not natural". On the other hand, Hyde–Lees did
respond to his chivalry and gave him "a wife, partner in magical evocations, and hostess to his literary friends" (Kline 25). Of which, these being such
uninspired things, Yeats could not get from Gonne. Gonne was placed on a pedestal for Yeats to admire and praise while Hyde
–Lees became a wife
and mother figure that was real and objective. This win/lose situation led to the question: "Does the imagination dwell the most / Upon a woman won
or a woman lost?" (CP 195). Kline comments, "The woman lost fascinates the imagination as symbol of all that is lost or elusive or unrealized as the
woman won cannot" (25). Therefore Gonne remained a mystery, while the woman won (Hyde–Lees) lent little to his creativity

Things Fall Apart By William Butler Yeats
First 50
Things Fall Apart refers to a situation deteriorating from an original functionality and transitioning into negative change in perspective of the
experiencer. I have already read the book, so I can only give my opinion in that perspective. The phrasing itself, that things fall apart, versus 'things are
falling apart' or 'things can fall apart' foreshadows the inevitability of this destruction with no chance of stopping it.
Things Fall Apart begins with an epigraph by William Butler Yeats to create a picture for the reader before commencing on a journey to the heart of
Nigeria and the nature of humans. From "The Second Coming" , the title is derived directly from the poem itself.
"Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world."
Even before introducing the physical setting, Achebe skillfully places this poem at the beginning of the book to foreshadow the life parallelling ending
of Things Fall Apart. By gyre, Yeats is referring to the twisting and constantly expanding spiral of chaos that will unfold. The falcon, representing the
characters, no longer can hear their roots and become lost in the sea of Christianity and the invasion of the British.
As Achebe opens the fable like story, the stable life, nobility and power that Okonkwo has earned by his own hand is threatened, taking the title into
mind. He has defied the legacy that his father, Unoka,

Discuss with reference to at least three poems, Yeats' treatment of Irish Concerns
Yeats changes his treatment of Irish concerns throughout his life and these changes are reflected in his poetry. Three poems that reflect these changes
are 'September 1913', 'Easter 1916' and 'Under Ben Bulben'. These poems show a transpositions in political thought. In 'September 1913' Yeats shows
his aversion to democracy and capitalism, and expresses his belief in an aristocratic society preferably governed by elite Protestants, as they had
supremacy over Catholics in his view (Chaudhry, 33). The events of the Rising initiated a metamorphosis in Yeats. 'Easter 1916' shows how Yeats

"All that delirium of the brave?" suggests that Yeats believed their intentions were admirable but their judgement was clouded, and that
instead of violence they should have been using literary means to fulfill their objectives.
'Easter 1916' displays a change in Yeats. The rising and its aftermath shocked Yeats and crushed some of the beliefs he previously held as expressed in
'September 1913'. Yeats was in England at the time of the rising and was annoyed at not being informed about the event before it occurred (Macrae 76),
this can be seen in the tone and subject of the first stanza. "Polite meaningless words" and "To please a companion / Around the fire
at the club" expresses how Yeats felt discordance at not being told about the rising, especially since he was one of the "club"
Nationalists. The rising shattered Yeats' disillusionment with the newIreland "All changed, changed utterly", shock arose out of the
willingness for people he knew to sacrifice themselves for the cause, of whom he thought were following him in the literary Nationalist approach.
Yeats was disgusted at the brutal way in which the executions were carried out and this significantly weakened his belief in politics. The brutality of
the death created martyrs as it gave the executed leaders authority and power they had not experienced before death. Yeats, who had previously

William Butler Yeats
One of Ireland's finest writers, William Butler Yeats served a long apprenticeship in the arts before his genius was fully developed. He did some of his
greatest work after he was fifty.
Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865. His father was a lawyer–turned–Irish painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and
settled in Bedford Park. In 1881 they returned to Dublin, where Yeatsstudied the Metropolitan School of Art. Yeats spent much time with his
grandparents in County Sligo in northwestern Ireland. The scenery and folklore of this region greatly influenced Yeats' work. For a while he studied
art, but during the 1890s he became active in London's literary life and helped found the Rhymers'...show more content...
The suggestive, beautiful lyricism of Yeats' early career (including such works as the famous 'Sailing to Byzantium') changed to the tune of spare and
tragic bitterness as Ireland faced certain war in the early 1910s. This was apparent in Yeats poem 'September 1913' in which he stated: "Romantic
Ireland's dead and gone." During the civil war Irish Free State soldiers burned many of Yeats' letters to Maud Gonne when they raided her house.
At the start of the war Yeats went to Oxford, but then returned to Dublin, becoming a Senator in the same year. A free Ireland was Maud Gonne's
passion, and Yeats' love for her sparked his interest in the country's political struggles. From 1922 until 1928 he was a senator in the Dail Eireann, or
Irish parliament. As a politician Yeats defended Protestant interests and took pro
–Treaty stance against Republicans. Yeats was passionate about
reforming Ireland, but frustrated at what seemed to be endless struggle.
After his stint as a senator, Yeats devoted himself to literature and drama, believing that poems and plays would create a national unity capable of
transforming the country. In 1916 he published what may be his most famous work, 'Easter 1916' about the Irish nationalist uprising. It referred to the
executed leaders of the uprising and stated: "Now and in time to be, / Wherever the green is

As Yeats began to become more notarized in his community for his writings and poems, the unique style and content of his lyrical structure also started
to become famous. By the early twentieth century his poetic style had became so notarized that it began to be copied and imitated by other lyrical
poets of his time. The imitation of his distinctive style by other poets began to frustrate him to the extent that he wrote an original poem which
completely explained his dilemma and intentions.
The poem "A Coat" shows a perfect example of how this phase of Yeats' poetry becomes more personal to himself. In this poem, Yeats doesn't use any
lush descriptions of nature, or any reliance of poetic devices such as assonance and consonance. This poem demonstrates that style is inseparable from
content, and how Yeats continually developed and changed his poetic style and content as he matured (Mann Neil).
The main subject of "A Coat" is essentially an announcement to the public that he is finished with his previous style of poetry. In the first stanza of
the poem, his choice of the word "song" means his poetry that is symbolic for his "coat" in which he "embroidered" it from "old mythologies". What
he is trying to say is that his poetry is decorated from tales of ancient mythologies. In the second stanza when the poem says "But the fools caught it,

William Butler Yeats And When You Are Old
Both poems, "When You Are Old" by William Butler Yeats and "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas, deal with aging,
growing older, and approaching death. It is your choice how you decide to spend your time on Earth, both living and approaching death. Do you
remember the good, with or without regrets; or do you defiantly fight aging and live your life to the fullest? Yeats is a speaker in his poem about his
lover. He tells a story through how his lover lived her years, from youth to old age to closing in on death. Thomas is a speaker on behalf of his father,

Politics By William Butler Yeats Analysis
Women have been in a constant war with themselves and society since the dawn of Adam and Eve. Adam, being the man, is seen as unmistakable
and only slightly less perfect than an angel. Eve, on the other hand, is the beginning of all sin and death in the world. To no one 's surprise, women
still face titles as degrading as Eve's in this day and age. "Politics" by William Butler Yeatsis a poem about this constant raging war women face. Yeats
cleverly tells a story about a man and a girl to send a message to all women that they are more than what society makes them out to be using politics.
The oppression women face is rarely talked about, and if it is, it is largely ignored. Yeats was able to convey his message without being ignored by

However, this is not to say that Yeats has created a narrator that wishes to control women. The girl is related to "Roman...Russian...Spanish politics"
(Yeats). This comparison is anything but random. These three nations during the time period of the poem were fascist and controlling countries that
were willing to do whatever it takes to obtain what it is they desire. This relationship between the obtainer and the obtained is the same in society.
Society has taught men that they must be the obtainers and do whatever it takes to obtain control of women, even if that means complete
degradation. The girl in the poem represents freedom in a man's war; she is presented as the prize. Women are given value and a title of importance
only when associated with men. Women are able to provide freedom, yet they are unable to free themselves from their own oppression because of the
intensity of it. Talking about politics is easy, talking about an issue that crushes souls and prevents an entire sex from pursuing their dreams is hard.
"Politics" by Yeats had the power to make this issue a household talk.
Nor women, men, or society are oblivious to the oppression women. Yet "here's a traveled man that knows" (Yeats). In the poem, society is given the
pronoun "he" to magnify the influence and power that men withhold over women in society. The exclusion of women in society exemplifies their
oppression. The

Analysis of When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats
When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats, represents and elderly woman reminiscing of her younger days. A past lover whispers to her as she
looks through a photo album. Basically, Yeats is showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will
always have her memories for companionship.
'When you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire' (l.1–2) depicts the woman in her age, needing to nap more frequently. He speaks
of a book (l.2) and the 'soft look' of her eyes (l.3–4). This book signifies a photo album that contains pictures of her as young adult.

?And bending down beside the glowing bars,? (l.9) could be translated to ?as you?re bending down to stoke the fire,? she?ll mumble to herself about
his death, ?how Love fled? (l.10) and his soul climbing to heaven to live ?amid a crowd of stars? (l.12).
In the last verse of When you are Old, William Butler Yeats uses personification of love to enhance the image of the late lover waiting for the elderly
woman. Lines 10–12 ?Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled, and paced upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of stars? give
personal qualities to love. By capitalizing love, it becomes its own being, which waits impatiently, hence pacing the mountain. Yeats gives love a face
hidden in the stars. The ?face? is love?s distinguishing characteristics, such as tenderness and sensitivity.
The conclusion of When You are Old leaves the woman smiling to herself over the memories she has. She knows that one day she will be reunited
with her true love, so she can live the remainder of her life peacefully.
I personally love this poem. It leaves me with a feeling of contentment, just thinking that someone with a little age, and all alone can look back upon
her life and keep smiling until it is her time to be united with her soul–mate. Usually when we consider the elderly, it is in a

The Life and Work of William Butler Yeats
Born in Dublin in the year 1865, William Butler Yeats would go on to become universally recognized by his peers as the greatest poet of this century
writing in the English language. This recognition would come as early as 1828, a decade before his death with the publication of arguably his finest
volume, The Tower (Fraser, 207). The son of one time attorney and later well known painter John Butler Yeats,W.B. Yeatswas of partially Cornish and

Yeats soon discovered that his first love was poetry not painting. Soon began Yeats's love affair with Ireland and Irish literature that would last the rest
of his life.
Yeats's spiritual outlook would play a significant role in his life and his works. Born into a Protestant family, with a paternal grandfather and
great–grandfather having been Anglican clergymen, religion was a constant presence in Yeats's childhood. Yeats began to abandon the religion of his
Rationalist upbringing and made a new religion out of poetic tradition (Kunitz, 1560). Yeats's interest in the occult and mysticism comes about early in
life, an influence which would come to partially define Yeats to his world of readers, whether accurately or inaccurately.
Yeats sought in his writing to create a fresh tradition and a unique style. He attempted to create a literature that was Irish in subject matter and tone.
Yeats strove to reawaken in his people a sense of the glory and significance of Ireland s historical and legendary past (Magill, 1958). Yeats found his

William Butler Yeats: the Lake Isle of Innisfree
William Butler Yeats (1865–1939), one of the foremost figures of 20th–century literature, was both born and educated in Dublin Ireland; he was
awarded the Noble Prize for literature in 1933. One of his most famous poems, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," was written early in his career as a
poet. In the poem, Yeats takes the reader to a small island away from the chaos of everyday life, an island where the poet imagines he will go to live
independently. The reader is transported, with the poet, to a place far away from schedules, deadlines, and stress. Yeats usesalliteration, end rhymes,
and other poetic strategies to transport the reader to his imaginary getaway: the Isle of Innisfree. One technique Yeats uses in his poem is anaphora.

One of the metaphors he uses is in the last line: "I hear it in the deep heart 's core." He is dreaming about Innisfree and how he sees it everywhere
he goes. His dreams are everywhere he is and its sounds are the beatings of his heart. If his heart is beating it means he is alive. That is a metaphor
for that not only is he alive, but his dreams and hopes of going to Innisfree are alive too. As long as he is living and breathing he will always hope
to escape the troubles and tribulations of the world he currently lives in and go to the one place he feels free and safe: the Isle of Innisfree. The
critic, Javier Diaz Soria, writes, In the end of the poem Yeats turns again to reality and it is reflected in the two final verses: 'While I stand on the
roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart 's core.' Here we realise that we have turned from an imaginary travel and that we are
again 'on the roadway, or on the pavement grey". This colour is also meaningful, because with it the poet wants to transmit that reality is obscure and
sad. The strong desire of the poet is again emphasized in the final verse, where he feels from the deep of his heart that he wants to be in a place like
Innisfree. On the other hand, we can interpret this from an optimistic point of view if we consider that we can imagine everything from everywhere. So
nothing can win the power that the imagination, fantasy or dream has, and this in one of the

Essay about William Butler Yeats
William Butler Yeats. William Butler Yeats was the major figure in the cultural revolution which developed from the strong nationalistic movement at
the end of the 19th century. He dominated the writings of a generation. He established forms and themes which came to be considered as the norms for
writers of his generation. Yeats was a confessional poet– that is to say, that he wrote his poetry directly from his own experiences. He was an idealist,
with a purpose. This was to create Art for his own people – the Irish. But in so doing, he experienced considerable frustration and disillusionment. The
tension between this ideal, and the reality is the basis of much of his writing. One central theme of his earlier poetry is the contrast...show more content...
In the final stanza, the poet's mood of anger and bitterness changes to one of acceptance and resignation. He concludes that these petty minded
merchants are so locked into their narrow world of self centred survival, that they are incapable of understanding the motivation and self sacrifice of
patriotism. Even if the dead heroes could return and confront the merchants with the extent of their sacrifices, they would be unable to understand or
appreciate what they had done. Self interest and materialism reign, idealism is dead and buried. He concludes on a weary note of acceptance. But

it. It is structured around the contrast between the Yeats' dream to write for the Irish people, and the reality. The poem opens on a casual
conversational note, Although I can see him still introducing us to the Fisherman, a wise and simple man who is the symbol of the Irish nation he had
hoped to write for. Yeats has long since accepted that such a man does not exist, but nonetheless he holds on to him as an inspiration to protect himself
against the reality. The reality is depicted in a litany of powerful, clever men, who misuse their abilities for their own personal ends– which are chiefly,
the acquisition and maintenance of power. Their goal is public acclaim, cynically acquired through a popularity based on the Catch cries of the

Analysis of William Butler Yeats' Poems Essay
Analysis of William Butler Yeats' Poems; When You Are Old, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, The Wild Swans at Coole, The Second Coming and Sailing
to Byzantium
In many poems, short stories, plays, television shows and novels an author usually deals with a main idea in each of their works. A main reason
they do this is due to the fact that they either have a strong belief in that very idea or it somehow correlates to an important piece of their life overall.
For example the author Thomas Hardy likes to deal with the idea of loss in many different ways within his poems some being positive and some being
negative. William Butler Yeatshas a main philosophical idea which he sticks to and portrays in his poems he believes once you die...show more

He goes on to say in line 8, "And loved the sorrows of your changing face;" The then again deals with the idea of change in this instance actually
saying the word change and how your face will change as age comes upon your body. There are many more times within this poem that Yeats mentions
change rather than changelessness.
Secondly, The Lake Isle of Innisfree expresses rather than a rushed life a life of peace and changelessness. Yates basically states in this poem that
he is sick of being in such a fast paced city. He doesn't reveal this until the end of the poem when he says on page 1141 lines 11 and 12, "When I
stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray, I hear it in the deep heart's core." Yates isn't exactly at the place of peace in which he calls
Innisfree yet that's where he'd rather be. On page 1141 Yates says line 1, "I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree." Later stating in line 5, "And
I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow," Here in Innisfree there would be peace and changelessness which Yates would prefer
rather than being in a constantly changing city setting. Next, in another poem by Yates titled The Wild Swans at Coole, Yates uses a different
approach and expressed changelessness within change. In this poem Yates talks a lot about swans it seems as though the poet is absolutely fascinated
with every aspect of the swan's life. Yates describes change within this poem on

William Butler Yeats' The Magi Essay Analysis

  • 1. William Butler Yeats’ The Magi Essay William Butler Yeats' The Magi Briefly stated, William Butler Yeats' The Magi is a poem about people who, upon reaching old age, or perhaps just older age, turn to God and the spiritual world for fulfillment and happiness. We are told in the footnote to this poem that, after writing The Dolls,Yeatslooked up into the blue sky and imagined that he could see "stiff figures in procession". Perhaps after imagining these figures, Yeats debated within himself whom these pictures could represent. This line further promotes the idea that these people have achieved great success, at least great material success, in their lives. A helm can be defined as "a tiller or wheel for controlling a ship's rudder" (Urdang, 261). Yeats is saying in this line that these people allowed silver, or money, to control their lives completely –the things they did, the places they went, the decisions they made, and so on. The last three lines of the poem, "And all their eyes still fixed, hoping to find once more, /Being by Calvary's turbulence unsatisfied, / The uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor," are the strongest. Yeats is saying that, although they are unhappy with their lives, they have not given up hope. They still feel that they can find perfect happiness. They realize that this happiness cannot be found in the lives they are currently living. Yeats often used the image of the cross or of Christ's crucifixion to symbolize things such as "discord, incompleteness, opposition, mortality, temporality" (Ellmann and O'Clair, 135). With this line, he is saying that these people have given up hope that they will ever be happy in their hectic, strife–filled, material worlds. They are now turning to God in order to find some sense of peace and fulfillment in their lives. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Feminine in William Butler Yeats' Poetry William Butler Yeats had a long history of involvement with women. He was deeply affected by all types of women; from love interests with Mrs. Olivia Shakespear, Maud Gonne and her adopted daughter Iseult, to a partnership and friendship with Lady Gregory, to marriage with Georgie Hyde–Lees, and finally the birth of his own daughter Anne Yeats. These relationships are reflected in his poetry on many different and multi–layered levels. The mentions of women in his work gives the readers some historical content as well as show the development of his feminine idea. As different as his many relationships with women were, so was his reflection of them in his writing. Yeats took people he...show more content... He appreciates them in his poem "Friends" by writing, "Now must I these three praise – / Three women that have wrought / What joy is in my days" (CP 124). The comparison of his relationship with Maud Gonne to that of his wife, however, reveals something deeper in his poetry. Although with Maud Gonne Yeats experienced repeated rejection, she was his muse and his beloved. Gonne was unattainable and this tortured Yeats: "Why should I blame her that she filled my days / With misery" (CP 91). He often referred to her as a figure of mythology, usually Helen of Troy; thus creating a mysterious image. Her love was untouchable and her "beauty like a tightened bow, a kind / That is not natural". On the other hand, Hyde–Lees did respond to his chivalry and gave him "a wife, partner in magical evocations, and hostess to his literary friends" (Kline 25). Of which, these being such uninspired things, Yeats could not get from Gonne. Gonne was placed on a pedestal for Yeats to admire and praise while Hyde –Lees became a wife and mother figure that was real and objective. This win/lose situation led to the question: "Does the imagination dwell the most / Upon a woman won or a woman lost?" (CP 195). Kline comments, "The woman lost fascinates the imagination as symbol of all that is lost or elusive or unrealized as the woman won cannot" (25). Therefore Gonne remained a mystery, while the woman won (Hyde–Lees) lent little to his creativity Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Things Fall Apart By William Butler Yeats First 50 Things Fall Apart refers to a situation deteriorating from an original functionality and transitioning into negative change in perspective of the experiencer. I have already read the book, so I can only give my opinion in that perspective. The phrasing itself, that things fall apart, versus 'things are falling apart' or 'things can fall apart' foreshadows the inevitability of this destruction with no chance of stopping it. Things Fall Apart begins with an epigraph by William Butler Yeats to create a picture for the reader before commencing on a journey to the heart of Nigeria and the nature of humans. From "The Second Coming" , the title is derived directly from the poem itself. "Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." Even before introducing the physical setting, Achebe skillfully places this poem at the beginning of the book to foreshadow the life parallelling ending of Things Fall Apart. By gyre, Yeats is referring to the twisting and constantly expanding spiral of chaos that will unfold. The falcon, representing the characters, no longer can hear their roots and become lost in the sea of Christianity and the invasion of the British. As Achebe opens the fable like story, the stable life, nobility and power that Okonkwo has earned by his own hand is threatened, taking the title into mind. He has defied the legacy that his father, Unoka, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. William Butler Yeats Discuss with reference to at least three poems, Yeats' treatment of Irish Concerns Yeats changes his treatment of Irish concerns throughout his life and these changes are reflected in his poetry. Three poems that reflect these changes are 'September 1913', 'Easter 1916' and 'Under Ben Bulben'. These poems show a transpositions in political thought. In 'September 1913' Yeats shows his aversion to democracy and capitalism, and expresses his belief in an aristocratic society preferably governed by elite Protestants, as they had supremacy over Catholics in his view (Chaudhry, 33). The events of the Rising initiated a metamorphosis in Yeats. 'Easter 1916' shows how Yeats (usually not supportive of violence as a political movement) credited...show more content... "All that delirium of the brave?" suggests that Yeats believed their intentions were admirable but their judgement was clouded, and that instead of violence they should have been using literary means to fulfill their objectives. 'Easter 1916' displays a change in Yeats. The rising and its aftermath shocked Yeats and crushed some of the beliefs he previously held as expressed in 'September 1913'. Yeats was in England at the time of the rising and was annoyed at not being informed about the event before it occurred (Macrae 76), this can be seen in the tone and subject of the first stanza. "Polite meaningless words" and "To please a companion / Around the fire at the club" expresses how Yeats felt discordance at not being told about the rising, especially since he was one of the "club" Nationalists. The rising shattered Yeats' disillusionment with the newIreland "All changed, changed utterly", shock arose out of the willingness for people he knew to sacrifice themselves for the cause, of whom he thought were following him in the literary Nationalist approach. Yeats was disgusted at the brutal way in which the executions were carried out and this significantly weakened his belief in politics. The brutality of the death created martyrs as it gave the executed leaders authority and power they had not experienced before death. Yeats, who had previously Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on William Butler Yeats William Butler Yeats One of Ireland's finest writers, William Butler Yeats served a long apprenticeship in the arts before his genius was fully developed. He did some of his greatest work after he was fifty. Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865. His father was a lawyer–turned–Irish painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and settled in Bedford Park. In 1881 they returned to Dublin, where Yeatsstudied the Metropolitan School of Art. Yeats spent much time with his grandparents in County Sligo in northwestern Ireland. The scenery and folklore of this region greatly influenced Yeats' work. For a while he studied art, but during the 1890s he became active in London's literary life and helped found the Rhymers'...show more content... The suggestive, beautiful lyricism of Yeats' early career (including such works as the famous 'Sailing to Byzantium') changed to the tune of spare and tragic bitterness as Ireland faced certain war in the early 1910s. This was apparent in Yeats poem 'September 1913' in which he stated: "Romantic Ireland's dead and gone." During the civil war Irish Free State soldiers burned many of Yeats' letters to Maud Gonne when they raided her house. At the start of the war Yeats went to Oxford, but then returned to Dublin, becoming a Senator in the same year. A free Ireland was Maud Gonne's passion, and Yeats' love for her sparked his interest in the country's political struggles. From 1922 until 1928 he was a senator in the Dail Eireann, or Irish parliament. As a politician Yeats defended Protestant interests and took pro –Treaty stance against Republicans. Yeats was passionate about reforming Ireland, but frustrated at what seemed to be endless struggle. After his stint as a senator, Yeats devoted himself to literature and drama, believing that poems and plays would create a national unity capable of transforming the country. In 1916 he published what may be his most famous work, 'Easter 1916' about the Irish nationalist uprising. It referred to the executed leaders of the uprising and stated: "Now and in time to be, / Wherever the green is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. William Butler Yeats Research Paper Yeats Irish Identity shaped poetry, mythology and history, other Irish writers, folktales, Irish Theatre. Many people say that William Butler Yeats was the greatest poem writer from the 20th century but to him he was just an ordinary person that had a love for writing poems. William Butler Yeats was born on 13 June 1865 in County Dublin, Ireland to John Butler Yeats, a lawyer turned portrait painter and Susan Mary Pollexfen, daughter of a wealthy family from county Sligo Yeats's mother shared with her son her interests in folklore, fairies, and astrology as well as her love of Ireland, particularly the region surrounding Sligo in western Ireland where Yeats spent much of his childhood. As Yeats began to become more notarized in his community for his writings and poems, the unique style and content of his lyrical structure also started to become famous. By the early twentieth century his poetic style had became so notarized that it began to be copied and imitated by other lyrical poets of his time. The imitation of his distinctive style by other poets began to frustrate him to the extent that he wrote an original poem which completely explained his dilemma and intentions. The poem "A Coat" shows a perfect example of how this phase of Yeats' poetry becomes more personal to himself. In this poem, Yeats doesn't use any lush descriptions of nature, or any reliance of poetic devices such as assonance and consonance. This poem demonstrates that style is inseparable from content, and how Yeats continually developed and changed his poetic style and content as he matured (Mann Neil). The main subject of "A Coat" is essentially an announcement to the public that he is finished with his previous style of poetry. In the first stanza of the poem, his choice of the word "song" means his poetry that is symbolic for his "coat" in which he "embroidered" it from "old mythologies". What he is trying to say is that his poetry is decorated from tales of ancient mythologies. • 11. Politics By William Butler Yeats Analysis Women have been in a constant war with themselves and society since the dawn of Adam and Eve. Adam, being the man, is seen as unmistakable and only slightly less perfect than an angel. Eve, on the other hand, is the beginning of all sin and death in the world. To no one 's surprise, women still face titles as degrading as Eve's in this day and age. "Politics" by William Butler Yeatsis a poem about this constant raging war women face. Yeats cleverly tells a story about a man and a girl to send a message to all women that they are more than what society makes them out to be using politics. The oppression women face is rarely talked about, and if it is, it is largely ignored. Yeats was able to convey his message without being ignored by ...show more content... However, this is not to say that Yeats has created a narrator that wishes to control women. The girl is related to "Roman...Russian...Spanish politics" (Yeats). This comparison is anything but random. These three nations during the time period of the poem were fascist and controlling countries that were willing to do whatever it takes to obtain what it is they desire. This relationship between the obtainer and the obtained is the same in society. Society has taught men that they must be the obtainers and do whatever it takes to obtain control of women, even if that means complete degradation. The girl in the poem represents freedom in a man's war; she is presented as the prize. Women are given value and a title of importance only when associated with men. Women are able to provide freedom, yet they are unable to free themselves from their own oppression because of the intensity of it. In the poem, society is given the pronoun "he" to magnify the influence and power that men withhold over women in society. The exclusion of women in society exemplifies their oppression. A past lover whispers to her as she looks through a photo album. Basically, Yeats is showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will always have her memories for companionship. 'When you are old and grey and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire' (l.1–2) depicts the woman in her age, needing to nap more frequently. Yeats speaks of her 'glad grace' (l.5) as her...show more content... ?And love the sorrows of your changing face? (l.8) means simply that even as her face aged, the love he felt for her grew stronger. ?And bending down beside the glowing bars,? (l.9) could be translated to ?as you?re bending down to stoke the fire,? she?ll mumble to herself about his death, ?how Love fled? (l.10) and his soul climbing to heaven to live ?amid a crowd of stars? (l.12). In the last verse of When you are Old, William Butler Yeats uses personification of love to enhance the image of the late lover waiting for the elderly woman. Lines 10–12 ?Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled, and paced upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of stars? give personal qualities to love. By capitalizing love, it becomes its own being, which waits impatiently, hence pacing the mountain. Yeats gives love a face hidden in the stars. The ?face? is love?s distinguishing characteristics, such as tenderness and sensitivity. The conclusion of When You are Old leaves the woman smiling to herself over the memories she has. She knows that one day she will be reunited with her true love, so she can live the remainder of her life peacefully. I personally love this poem. It leaves me with a feeling of contentment, just thinking that someone with a little age, and all alone can look back upon her life and keep smiling until it is her time to be united with her soul–mate. Yeats's spiritual outlook would play a significant role in his life and his works. Born into a Protestant family, with a paternal grandfather and great–grandfather having been Anglican clergymen, religion was a constant presence in Yeats's childhood. Yeats began to abandon the religion of his Rationalist upbringing and made a new religion out of poetic tradition (Kunitz, 1560). Yeats's interest in the occult and mysticism comes about early in life, an influence which would come to partially define Yeats to his world of readers, whether accurately or inaccurately. Yeats sought in his writing to create a fresh tradition and a unique style. He attempted to create a literature that was Irish in subject matter and tone. Yeats strove to reawaken in his people a sense of the glory and significance of Ireland s historical and legendary past (Magill, 1958). • 19. William Butler Yeats: the Lake Isle of Innisfree William Butler Yeats (1865–1939), one of the foremost figures of 20th–century literature, was both born and educated in Dublin Ireland; he was awarded the Noble Prize for literature in 1933. One of his most famous poems, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," was written early in his career as a poet. In the poem, Yeats takes the reader to a small island away from the chaos of everyday life, an island where the poet imagines he will go to live independently. The reader is transported, with the poet, to a place far away from schedules, deadlines, and stress. Yeats usesalliteration, end rhymes, and other poetic strategies to transport the reader to his imaginary getaway: the Isle of Innisfree. One technique Yeats uses in his poem is anaphora. ...show more content... One of the metaphors he uses is in the last line: "I hear it in the deep heart 's core." He is dreaming about Innisfree and how he sees it everywhere he goes. His dreams are everywhere he is and its sounds are the beatings of his heart. If his heart is beating it means he is alive. That is a metaphor for that not only is he alive, but his dreams and hopes of going to Innisfree are alive too. As long as he is living and breathing he will always hope to escape the troubles and tribulations of the world he currently lives in and go to the one place he feels free and safe: the Isle of Innisfree. The critic, Javier Diaz Soria, writes, In the end of the poem Yeats turns again to reality and it is reflected in the two final verses: 'While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart 's core.' Here we realise that we have turned from an imaginary travel and that we are again 'on the roadway, or on the pavement grey". This colour is also meaningful, because with it the poet wants to transmit that reality is obscure and sad. The strong desire of the poet is again emphasized in the final verse, where he feels from the deep of his heart that he wants to be in a place like Innisfree. On the other hand, we can interpret this from an optimistic point of view if we consider that we can imagine everything from everywhere. So nothing can win the power that the imagination, fantasy or dream has, and this in one of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Essay about William Butler Yeats William Butler Yeats. William Butler Yeats was the major figure in the cultural revolution which developed from the strong nationalistic movement at the end of the 19th century. He dominated the writings of a generation. He established forms and themes which came to be considered as the norms for writers of his generation. Yeats was a confessional poet– that is to say, that he wrote his poetry directly from his own experiences. He was an idealist, with a purpose. This was to create Art for his own people – the Irish. But in so doing, he experienced considerable frustration and disillusionment. The tension between this ideal, and the reality is the basis of much of his writing. One central theme of his earlier poetry is the contrast...show more content... In the final stanza, the poet's mood of anger and bitterness changes to one of acceptance and resignation. He concludes that these petty minded merchants are so locked into their narrow world of self centred survival, that they are incapable of understanding the motivation and self sacrifice of patriotism. Self interest and materialism reign, idealism is dead and buried. He concludes on a weary note of acceptance. But let them be, they're dead and gone, They're with O'Leary in the grave. The Fisherman. This poem is also about Art, and the Irish people's response to it. It is structured around the contrast between the Yeats' dream to write for the Irish people, and the reality. The poem opens on a casual conversational note, Although I can see him still introducing us to the Fisherman, a wise and simple man who is the symbol of the Irish nation he had hoped to write for. Yeats has long since accepted that such a man does not exist, but nonetheless he holds on to him as an inspiration to protect himself against the reality. The reality is depicted in a litany of powerful, clever men, who misuse their abilities for their own personal ends– which are chiefly, the acquisition and maintenance of power. Analysis of William Butler Yeats' Poems Essay Analysis of William Butler Yeats' Poems; When You Are Old, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, The Wild Swans at Coole, The Second Coming and Sailing to Byzantium In many poems, short stories, plays, television shows and novels an author usually deals with a main idea in each of their works. A main reason they do this is due to the fact that they either have a strong belief in that very idea or it somehow correlates to an important piece of their life overall. For example the author Thomas Hardy likes to deal with the idea of loss in many different ways within his poems some being positive and some being negative. He goes on to say in line 8, "And loved the sorrows of your changing face;" The then again deals with the idea of change in this instance actually saying the word change and how your face will change as age comes upon your body. There are many more times within this poem that Yeats mentions change rather than changelessness. Secondly, The Lake Isle of Innisfree expresses rather than a rushed life a life of peace and changelessness. Yates basically states in this poem that he is sick of being in such a fast paced city. He doesn't reveal this until the end of the poem when he says on page 1141 lines 11 and 12, "When I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray, I hear it in the deep heart's core." Yates isn't exactly at the place of peace in which he calls Innisfree yet that's where he'd rather be. On page 1141 Yates says line 1, "I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree." Later stating in line 5, "And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow," Here in Innisfree there would be peace and changelessness which Yates would prefer rather than being in a constantly changing city setting. Next, in another poem by Yates titled The Wild Swans at Coole, Yates uses a different approach and expressed changelessness within change. In this poem Yates talks a lot about swans it seems as though the poet is absolutely fascinated with every aspect of the swan's life.
