Gender and Relationships Essay
Gender and Relationships The history of courtship and dating has evolved over the years and there are major gender differences that impact
personal relationships dealing with males and females. Focusing on romantic relationships, we will look into Stewart's and Arliss's distinctive
theories on views, expectations, and desires of being in a commitment with an individual. Some believe the longer the courtship, the better chance of
being in a real relationship, possibly the rest of your life with this person. Today we live in a fast paced society were things like "being steady" is not
the norm anymore and everything has sped up since the 1950's. "The Purpose of marriage has shifted from economic necessity to...show more content...
In Science Direct's journal article they conducted experiments to see what makes a relationship work and what can make them fail. "We argued that the
social construction of more serious sexual involvements requires time, energy, and resources. These costs have the effect of screening out individuals
who are unwilling to invest in their partners. Alternatively, they encourage "we" identities and attachment in couples through social construction."
(Paik 749) My mother dated my father fourteen years before marrying him and making that commitment to be there through thick and thin. Another
wise decision my mother made was to try living together before getting married, so they could both adjust to the different settings of home life
together. When I came along my mom and dad worked opposite shifts so they could have the opportunity of taking care of me separately in the
earlier years. Both of my parents worked full time jobs and challenged the stereotypical role of the "stay at home mother" and "working father".
"Aggression and Physical Violence is another appeal in Stewart's theory, which can lead to horrible emotion and mental problems." (Power Point
Stewart) When conflict arose between the two my father never used any physical abuse towards my mother and she knew how to just walk away and
talk about the issue later when things had calmed down. "Stewart reports reasons why men and women encounter conflict when together that can result
in breakup. He

Are gender issues as important as the media makes them to be, or is it as pointless as arguing over the correct pronunciation of tomato or tomatoes so
to speak. While we can agree gender discrimination is not something to joke about, but is it that prevalent in today's society? Is enforcing gender roles
as damaging as experts argue? Finally the "issue" of gender identity, is it important at all? Is gender identity a more complex form of gender roles?
What is the difference between someone deciding to wear the opposite gender's clothes and identity as the opposite gender? Gender discrimination is
the only real gender issue, while it is not as prevalent today it is still important. Gender roles and gender identity are not as prevalent as the media
paints them to be, the idea of gender is an over analyzed human conception and has no real importance.
Worldwide, most countries recognize that equal rights should exist between men and women. Many have produced regulations intended to fight
discrimination and programs granting women access to health, education, and economic rights such as land ownership. However, the fact remains that
women have fewer opportunities than men to benefit from economic development, with lower participation in the labor force (Johnson). While the
principle of gender equity in the workplace is generally accepted, discriminatory practices persist in many organizations despite regulations to the
contrary. It is important to create an open and friendly

Boys educational underachievement (Epstain et al, 1998, Reed, 1999), has raised nationwide and global apprehension and has been the main focal
point of the current 'gender agenda'. Newspapers consist of headlines such as "It is right to worry about the future of our young men" (2010 The
Observer), "Use sand to help young boys write, says government" (2009: Guardian), "Are co–ed or single–sex lessons best?" (2009: Guardian) and
"Quarter of boys miss writing target at 7!" (2009: Guardian) In this essay I will present relevant statistics illustrating the current gender gap of boys
underachievement. Further to this, I will also exemplify the social and political change in times in terms of how this has effected boys and girls

"The chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shown by man attaining to a higher eminence in what ever he takes up, than women
can attain– whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands." (Charles Darwin, The Decent of Man,
(1871)) This text was written over 100 years ago, fortunately the observation of women is now less ignorant . The reason behind this change in opinion
over time, can also lead us to be au fait with and understand today's crises of boys underachievement in education. In the nineteenth century academic
education for girls was undetermined and controversial to say the very least, parents where bombarded with the notion that their daughters learning
mathematics and science would lead to their health and welfare becoming compromised, primarily jeopardizing their femininity and reproductive
potential. Authorities at that time stated that: "in its full sense, the reproductive power means the power to bear a well developed infant, and to supply
that infant with the natural food for the natural period. Most of the flat–chested girls who survive their high pressure education are incompetent to do
this." (H. Spencer 1867) If girls

Gather Information Gathering information to validate gender issues in the workplace is a better approach than merely assuming the validity of
information provided. Gender discrimination is a problem across different countries, organizations, and cultures. It is rooted in traditional patriarchal
norms, which put women as minor people in their respective workplaces and homes. Gender discrimination negatively affects women because it harms
their social health, lowers their output in the workplace, and makes them receive unfair and biased treatment from employers. In most cases, there are
no clear policies in place to eliminate these problems. Hence, the gathering of information to validate the...show more content...
Therefore, gender inequality affects performance of female employees because of their social stance in the institution.
Benefits and Risks of the Approach
Consequently, the approach of gathering information has its benefits and risks. The advantage of following the approach is that it encourages equal
participation of all departments, which considers different ways of solving the problem at hand. The approach is also beneficial to leaders in different
departments. These leaders have a privilege to share their experiences of gender inequality, and hence, shed extra light on its existence in diverse
departments of the institution. The group discussion will also help in determining the perceptions and attitudes of leaders about the issue. Hence, from
the perspectives of leaders, the vice president can have an enhanced understanding, and thus, can make an informed decision on whether the leadership
team needs orientation on gender equity or not. The group discussion will also help to get the insights on whether the leaders can be trusted as agents
of promoting gender equity among their subordinates.
There are also risks associated with the approach of gathering information. Essentially, there is a higher probability that men dominate the leadership
team, which can be a problem in disseminating the issue of gender equity. In most cases, men are satisfied and comfortable as they are superior and

Gender Issues In America
We first decided on one thing: an issue in American society. America has been an underdeveloped country since the beginning and has now risen up to
the most powerful economy. What society need not forget, in our thoughts, is the desperate times of America; where all hope was lost and chaos was
onboard. Looking deeper into the topic at hand, we realized that women had experienced much prejudice and we in fact were that gender. Scanning
through possible topics, we reached the National Organization for Women with their dedication from the start and start of the modernfeminism wave.
Our first step in conducting research was the use of the available books in the local public and school library which we received background
information on our topic before we became specific. Next, we scanned the VRC databases for specific information that we could use and pasted it
into a document of the specific searches we could look at. After coming together to create our specific topic, the searches that we created earlier
became in handy. Next we seperated into our own areas of major so that one of us searched the internet for new information and...show more content...
Our teachers and advisors helped us incorporate exploration, encounter and exchange into our project as we listened and followed their expertise and
instructions. Creating a rough sketch of our exhibit board, we found relevant images that collaborated with our writing. When we thought about the
color scheme we thought about the "sad times" of history where women were treated unequally to men but then the "rebellious times" in which women
would start to use their voices for their rights. This is where we started to understand the positives and negatives of color and also our exploration,
encounter, and exchange. With the theme in mind and guidance from our advisors, we finished our exhibit

Essay about Gender Issues in Religion
Gender Issues in Religion
Amongst the world religions are many different attitudes towards gender issues and sexuality. A hundred years ago, or even a lot less, these different
perspectives did not exist, as they were often considered unimportant, as King noted 'until recently little attention has been paid to gender differences
and their impact on religious teaching and practice.'[1] With some religions, their scriptures are considered to be infallible and therefore not to be
questioned. So the question itself 'are religions sexist' is a fairly new one. Some religions are thought of as being more sexist than others, but then there
are also religions that that do not share the shame ideas...show more content...
Women are still not allowed to be priests, despite the fact that there are many examples in the Bible of Jesus telling people through parables and
other means that everyone is equal. Some Catholics just accept the fact that women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church, as this is the Pope's
orders and he is infallible. Nobody seems to dispute that the Pope must be male, firstly because 'Pope' means father and maybe because they know
that the idea of a woman becoming Pope is just too unlikely. However there are Catholics that exist who believe in the authority of the Pope but,
'are convinced that the Pope and his advisors in Romeare making a serious mistake by dismissing women as priests.'[3] This website details the
reasons for women not being accepted for ordination, but also reasons why this is wrong. Evidence is given that there were a few heretical sects in
existence that allowed women to be priests, as well as passages written by various saints that do not condemn the idea of female ordination. It does not
seem that the Vatican are going to change their minds on this subject anytime soon, so this is a valid example of a religion maintaining a sexist attitude
even when there is opposition.
Fortunately, not all of the Christian denominations have taken this stance. The Anglican Church has proved that they take the idea of equality
seriously, as in 1992 The

Gender And Sexuality Reflection Paper
In the first reflection essay that I wrote for this class, I explained that while I have had a few classes on gender and sexuality, this class has really
helped me further my understanding of the topics and has opened my eyes to many other topics and ideas that previous classes were not able to cover.
This class really helped me understand other cultures views on gender and sexuality and how not all cultures view gender and sexuality as we do.
One idea that I was able to really see and understand is what different cultures expect of males and the traditional gender roles and stereotypes that a
lot of males have to deal with. Some of the main roles and stereotypes that males are pushed into include being fertile and having children, being...show

his wife (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 316). He is worried that he and his wife will end up experiencing "the stigma of childlessness" (Wentzell & Inhorn
2011: 317).
Along with the ability to reproduce, a man's virility is seen as a large part of his masculinity. Wentzell and Inhorn wrote about a 68–year–old Mexican
man who became depressed and suicidal after he had to have his cancerous penis amputated (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 307). The man claimed that
"without my penis, I feel that now I'm not a man" and even though he already had many children, not being able to continue having sex makes him
unmanly (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 307). In Mexico, men are seen as wanting to dominate and have sex with all women and possibly lower–status men
that are available (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 309). The 68–year–old barber Pepe wants to be seen as vigorous and having a lot of sex so he uses Viagra
and has sexual relationships with women other than his wife (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 311). The 40–year–old construction worker JosГ© believes that
his erectile dysfunction was partially caused by his inability to have successful dating experiences, a successful marriage, or be successful at work

Gender Issues Within The Society Essay
Gender issues in society have incited growing debates and an analyzing or in a sense "a calling out of" of writers, books, movies, celebrities,
historical figures on their views. It is really not a surprise that C.S. Lewis being a popular figure back in time has found his work under scrutiny
over his views and writing off women. It is quite easy to dismiss his views as being a product of that time and therefore dismissing any claims on
labeling him .To some it is not so easy to simply dismiss him as a product of his time, acquiring him different labels. Lewis because of his beliefs
and writing has been too labelled as either a misogynist or a sexist. These two labels while from the same "grouping" there is a distinction between
the two. An argument can arise from this, which is was Lewis merely a sexist or was he a misogynist based on his writings and beliefs?
Sexism is usually defined as a discrimination based on gender (in this case women), while misogyny comes from two Greek words, "misein", to hate,
and "gyne" woman. Sexism is reflected views of socially constructed views of gender like girls cannot be leaders. Misogyny, on the other hand, isn't
merely a strong version of sexism it is a "feeling of contempt or anger" one can express at women for challenging the norms of what women should
look and act like. As pointed out before different scholars saw his work from this view. In the Daughters of Lilith text, the author represents a view
that shows Lewis to be a

Gender Inequality : A Social Problem
Gender inequality is a social problem that is widespread in society. It is referred to as the unfair treatment of individuals based on one 's gender.
Historically, laws have opposed women to go to school, access certain jobs, and purchase property. Gender inequality has been experience through
culture – honor–killing, sex–selective abortion, and society – occupation, gender roles, and education. The social expectations of men and women differ
between cultures that are constructed socially and culturally. These expectations are displayed in roles, and behavior believed both by men and women
and their interdependent relationships. Gender inequality can be further understood through the structure of sexism. Discrimination takes place in
gender inequality for the reason that men and women are treated on the basis of gender alone (Amjad, R., Ashfaq, M., Kousar, R., Saghir, A., 2010).
Gender is the socially– constructed role and explanation of relationships between men and women. (Sport & Dev) In my opinion, I define Gender
inequality as the unfair treatment amid both sexes. According to Sage Knowledge, "Gender inequality is allowing individuals of different
opportunities due to perceived differences based solely on issues of gender."
How is it an issue? The source and level of gender inequality differs across the world. Crime against women of gender inequality inhere violence,
murder, and rape. Evidence of this social problem is based on history, cultural belief and practice.

Sexual Harassment And Gender Inequality
Social inequality is a pressing issue in society today. It is a problem that is embedded deeply in society and has a harmful and negative impact. It
creates an uneven distribution of resources and opportunities in society thereby causing people to be marginalized. There are many categories
associated with social inequality. Examples include race, ethnicity, age, gender, power and social class. This paper will examine gender inequality in
society. Using an article from the Toronto Star, I will focus on sexual harassment as an issue of gender inequality in the workplace and the impact it
has had on the self–esteem as well as opportunities and achievements of women. Gender Inequality can be defined as the unequal treatment and
prejudice of a person on the basis of sex and gender roles. Sexual harassment is further defined as any unwelcome sexual advances, request for
sexual favours of verbal, gestural or physical nature and with objectionable overtones which cause discomfort, humiliation, fear or anger (I.L.O,
1958). Gender Inequality is mostly affected by women. In the workplace, schools, political positions and even in families, women are seen as the
inferior sex. In Canadian history, it was not until the 1900s women were given equal rights to vote and the 1920s before a woman was elected in
parliament. (Smith, 2011) This is to show that gender discrimination has been embedded in society for a very long time and although laws have been
made to make sure males and females are

Gender Inequality : Today 's Society Essay
Gender inequality has become an ongrowing issue in today's society. This issue begun in early history and has grown over time. In early days it
simply began as women not being able to vote or not being able to work. This has improved over time and now women have gained those rights, but
there are still inequalities in today's society between genders. When most people think of gender inequality they automatically think of women. Men
have also started to become victims of gender inequality. Men are expected to be tough and show no emotion. They are also expected to live up to
the standards of other men by doing work that is considered "manly." Having this type of gender gap is impacting today's society greatly. Gender
issues are affecting men and women in today's society and a change needs to happen. Women began as the first victims of gender inequality.
Gender issues began when women were expected to clean and take care of their families. Chores were also gender oriented; children that were
girls were expected to help wash dishes and learn to cook. Women also did not work at all. The very few women who did work were often school
teachers, but they did nothing more than that. A woman's main priority was to care for her family and take care of her home. This expectation of
women changed over time once women began to work. In today's society it is more common for a woman to work, but she is still expected to take on
the motherly role of the house. This role

Gender Equality : A Well Discussed Issue Essay
Joseline Santizo

Women in STEM Gender equality has been a well–discussed issue in recent years. By some people, women are not treated on the same level as men
because of preconceived stereotypes and gender roles. However, others have been fighting tirelessly to increase the amount of people who treat women
and men equally. Although women are treated more fairly with regards to men today than in the 1950's, there are still many discrepancies between the
sexes. One main concern is that the amount of men and women going into science, technology, engineering, and math, STEM, majors and occupations
is disproportionate, with the larger amount of entrants being male. Despite the hard work of feminists, women are not pursuing STEM careers because
of stereotypes and a specific idea of their gender role, both of which females are exposed to from a young age throughout adulthood. As females grow
into women, they are exposed to stereotypes about their own gender and are given one specific mental image of what a female should look and act like.
Being a female is most commonly associated with growing up, getting married, having children, and becoming a housewife. If women are reared in an
environment where this idea is constantly being reinforced, then those girls are in danger of believing that that is what they must do in order to be
viewed as a "woman." This type of environment causes a type of self–fulfilling prophecy for women because

Gender Issues In College Essay
Out of all the fields offered to incoming freshmen in college, I chose engineering. To me, it was an easy choice; I excelled in my high school STEM
classes and I'm a problem–solver, which is essentially what an engineer is, just on a bigger scale. In those classes, I took pride in the fact that I was one
of few females, and never felt like my gender affected my performance or my opportunities. It wasn't until my civil engineering class that I noticed a
change. As one of only two girls in the class, I wasn't treated as an equal by my male classmates. I was faced with both comments on my shorts, body,
and personal life, and lessened workload because I "wasn't cut out for the manual labor." I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that I was treated
differently though, since only 25 percent of the labor force in STEM fields are women, and only 18–20 percent of engineering students are women.
The numbers were, and still are against me,...show more content...
Colleges always market their zero tolerance for sexual misconduct; so why is it that these situations are kept secret until a media outlet grabs hold of
the story? University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology are prime examples, as they both recently failed to publicly
acknowledge their findings that prominent male science professors have harassed female students until the stories had been discovered by news
media. When presented with situations like these, colleges seem to default to covering it up and keeping it secret in order to keep their reputation.
Personally, I would respect a college more if they acknowledged that one of their professors had sexually harassed students and then were fired, than if
they hid the fact until it inevitably came up in the

Gender Discrimination : An Ethical Problem Essay
Abstract: Gender Discrimination is a type of discrimination where basing on a particular person's gender (or) sex a person is discriminated, majorly
this type of discrimination is faced by women and girls. In this globalized world, where interaction between two individuals became easy as seams of

Gender, Gender And Sexuality Essay
Gender and Sexuality
Gender and sexuality are problematically understood and represented in Australian classrooms because of the presence of gender bias and the
marginalisation of sexually diverse students, which reflects the patriarchal society that we live in. It is important to acknowledge that issues related to
gender and sexuality are not just issues for older children and teenagers. They are just as applicable to young children who are at a very
impressionable and susceptible stage of their lives and are going through the process of forming their own notions of what is acceptable behaviour
for males and females (Gobby, 2016b). Carolyn Hannan, Director of the Advancement of Women Division of the United Nations Department of
Economic and Social Affairs, describes the concept of 'gender order' in her opening keynote speech titled "Challenging the gender order". She states
that 'gender order' "could be very simplistically defined as the way society is organised around the roles, responsibilities, activities and contributions
of women and men, in other words, what is expected, allowed and encouraged in relation to what women and men do in different contexts" (Hannan,
2006). This notion is linked to the binary perception of gender and sexuality where the ideals and beliefs surrounding masculinity oppose those of
femininity (Gobby, 2016b). For example, males are aggressive, females are gentle; females are emotional, males are rational; and males are tough

The Issues Of Gender And Sexuality
In "Hookers at the Point," the issues of gender and sexuality clearly play an important role in prostitution. Prostitution is one of the most controversial
and complex subjects in many parts of the world. Some feminist theorists believe that prostitution is a form of violence against females and others
believe is a way for females to be in control of their sexuality. According to sociologist Susie Jacobs, who explores the link between sexuality and
gender control, "women's sexuality is regulated in most or all societies and regulation is maintained through the legal sphere, social constraints and
punishments" (Jacobs, 2014). Thus, the idea of selling sex is considered linked to a system of male power that represents "the absolute embodiment of
patriarchal man privilege" (Kesler, 2002). This cultural stereotype of prostitutes is complicated because the motivation behind prostitution varies.
Prostitution cuts through all education levels and classes of life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how prostitution is a gendered paradigm and
how its "actors" (prostitutes, johns, and pimps) are "doing gender." Several points will be discussed; first, the lives of prostitutes and how they are
doing gender within this patriarchal society will be explored. Second, the reasons johns seek prostitutes and the double standards which
disproportionately harm prostitutes and the culture of acceptability of violence. According to feminist theorist, Jane Scoular,

The Issues of Race, Class, and Gender Essay
The Issues of Race, Class, and Gender
Race, Class and Gender issues are commonly brought up. Throughout history many groups have been stigmatized not just for their race, but for their
sex, and class as well. People of lower class incomes get slandered for where they live and for not having the economical means to purchase most
common goods. Women have been considered the weaker sex for centuries, and currently, some of the old fashioned and ignorant theories on women
being subordinate to men prevail.
In the article " Rethinking Women's Biology" the author position appeared to be that society dictates what a woman means and teaches it from

Gender Issues in the Workplace Introduction Believe it or not women have had rights in the work force for over two hundred years. Women

Males and females are classed differently from the moment they are pronounced boy or girl. Gender determines the differences in power and control in
which men and women have over the socioeconomic determinants of their health, lives and status in their community. Our society moulds how men
and women should and should not behave and can be observed in all parts of our society. As a result of theseGender stereotypes men and women have
issues which affect their health which are unique to each gender. Males for example are perceived to be greater risk takers as a whole in our society
than that of females. We represent risk taking behavior with masculinity and violence, high speed driving and contact sport with the male gender.

Women in the last thirty years or so have fought for equality among the sexes in all forms. The Women?s movement have fought hard to change this
socially constructed view of our society. Due to this double burden placed on working mothers there is a far greater demand on their bodies and an
increasingly likelihood of illness in many forms as well as psychological trauma such as depression and anxiety due to the constant workload. Females
in the past were argued as having a less likelihood of illness because they were not as abundant in the workforce thus giving them more relaxation time.
When males retire around the age group of 55 to 65 many of them pass away early due to the dramatic change in lifestyle. They go from five days a
week working nine or ten hour days to completely nothing and because they have become so adapted to the working week they change their habits,
their lifestyle differs and they develop sickness and health problems.
As health is seen as a holistic concept we also have to focus on the psychological side of health. Mental illnesses affect around one in every three
people and an individual?s gender is a critical determinant of mental health and mental illness. Women are much more likely to develop mental health
problems then males do. The most predominant of these disorders are depression, anxiety and somatic complaints.

The potential barriers the children will inevitably face is racism, and possibly stigma, from their mothers same sex union. There is no ambiguity to the
children's ethnicity. Although, society has evolved in their perceptions towards same sex couples, there still exist stigma, and prejudices, towards this
population of individuals.
One skill a social worker would need to have and utilize in this situation with biracial children and a same sex couple is cultural competency. "The
knowledge and skills that a social worker must develop in order to be effective in dealing with multicultural clients" (Lum, 1999, p. 3). The NASW

Gender Issues in Relationships and Society

  • 1. Gender and Relationships Essay Gender and Relationships The history of courtship and dating has evolved over the years and there are major gender differences that impact personal relationships dealing with males and females. Focusing on romantic relationships, we will look into Stewart's and Arliss's distinctive theories on views, expectations, and desires of being in a commitment with an individual. Some believe the longer the courtship, the better chance of being in a real relationship, possibly the rest of your life with this person. Today we live in a fast paced society were things like "being steady" is not the norm anymore and everything has sped up since the 1950's. "The Purpose of marriage has shifted from economic necessity to...show more content... In Science Direct's journal article they conducted experiments to see what makes a relationship work and what can make them fail. "We argued that the social construction of more serious sexual involvements requires time, energy, and resources. These costs have the effect of screening out individuals who are unwilling to invest in their partners. Alternatively, they encourage "we" identities and attachment in couples through social construction." (Paik 749) My mother dated my father fourteen years before marrying him and making that commitment to be there through thick and thin. Another wise decision my mother made was to try living together before getting married, so they could both adjust to the different settings of home life together. When I came along my mom and dad worked opposite shifts so they could have the opportunity of taking care of me separately in the earlier years. Both of my parents worked full time jobs and challenged the stereotypical role of the "stay at home mother" and "working father". "Aggression and Physical Violence is another appeal in Stewart's theory, which can lead to horrible emotion and mental problems." (Power Point Stewart) When conflict arose between the two my father never used any physical abuse towards my mother and she knew how to just walk away and talk about the issue later when things had calmed down. "Stewart reports reasons why men and women encounter conflict when together that can result in breakup. He Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Are gender issues as important as the media makes them to be, or is it as pointless as arguing over the correct pronunciation of tomato or tomatoes so to speak. While we can agree gender discrimination is not something to joke about, but is it that prevalent in today's society? Is enforcing gender roles as damaging as experts argue? Finally the "issue" of gender identity, is it important at all? Is gender identity a more complex form of gender roles? What is the difference between someone deciding to wear the opposite gender's clothes and identity as the opposite gender? Gender discrimination is the only real gender issue, while it is not as prevalent today it is still important. Gender roles and gender identity are not as prevalent as the media paints them to be, the idea of gender is an over analyzed human conception and has no real importance. Worldwide, most countries recognize that equal rights should exist between men and women. Many have produced regulations intended to fight discrimination and programs granting women access to health, education, and economic rights such as land ownership. However, the fact remains that women have fewer opportunities than men to benefit from economic development, with lower participation in the labor force (Johnson). While the principle of gender equity in the workplace is generally accepted, discriminatory practices persist in many organizations despite regulations to the contrary. It is important to create an open and friendly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay about Gender Issues in Schools Boys educational underachievement (Epstain et al, 1998, Reed, 1999), has raised nationwide and global apprehension and has been the main focal point of the current 'gender agenda'. Newspapers consist of headlines such as "It is right to worry about the future of our young men" (2010 The Observer), "Use sand to help young boys write, says government" (2009: Guardian), "Are co–ed or single–sex lessons best?" (2009: Guardian) and "Quarter of boys miss writing target at 7!" (2009: Guardian) In this essay I will present relevant statistics illustrating the current gender gap of boys underachievement. Further to this, I will also exemplify the social and political change in times in terms of how this has effected boys and girls educational...show more content... "The chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shown by man attaining to a higher eminence in what ever he takes up, than women can attain– whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands." (Charles Darwin, The Decent of Man, (1871)) This text was written over 100 years ago, fortunately the observation of women is now less ignorant . The reason behind this change in opinion over time, can also lead us to be au fait with and understand today's crises of boys underachievement in education. In the nineteenth century academic education for girls was undetermined and controversial to say the very least, parents where bombarded with the notion that their daughters learning mathematics and science would lead to their health and welfare becoming compromised, primarily jeopardizing their femininity and reproductive potential. Authorities at that time stated that: "in its full sense, the reproductive power means the power to bear a well developed infant, and to supply that infant with the natural food for the natural period. Most of the flat–chested girls who survive their high pressure education are incompetent to do this." (H. Spencer 1867) If girls Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Gender Equity Issues Gender Equity Issues Case study Gather Information Gathering information to validate gender issues in the workplace is a better approach than merely assuming the validity of information provided. Gender discrimination is a problem across different countries, organizations, and cultures. It is rooted in traditional patriarchal norms, which put women as minor people in their respective workplaces and homes. Gender discrimination negatively affects women because it harms their social health, lowers their output in the workplace, and makes them receive unfair and biased treatment from employers. In most cases, there are no clear policies in place to eliminate these problems. Hence, the gathering of information to validate the...show more content... Therefore, gender inequality affects performance of female employees because of their social stance in the institution. Benefits and Risks of the Approach Consequently, the approach of gathering information has its benefits and risks. The advantage of following the approach is that it encourages equal participation of all departments, which considers different ways of solving the problem at hand. The approach is also beneficial to leaders in different departments. These leaders have a privilege to share their experiences of gender inequality, and hence, shed extra light on its existence in diverse departments of the institution. The group discussion will also help in determining the perceptions and attitudes of leaders about the issue. Hence, from the perspectives of leaders, the vice president can have an enhanced understanding, and thus, can make an informed decision on whether the leadership team needs orientation on gender equity or not. The group discussion will also help to get the insights on whether the leaders can be trusted as agents of promoting gender equity among their subordinates. There are also risks associated with the approach of gathering information. Essentially, there is a higher probability that men dominate the leadership team, which can be a problem in disseminating the issue of gender equity. In most cases, men are satisfied and comfortable as they are superior and leaders of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Gender Issues In America We first decided on one thing: an issue in American society. America has been an underdeveloped country since the beginning and has now risen up to the most powerful economy. What society need not forget, in our thoughts, is the desperate times of America; where all hope was lost and chaos was onboard. Looking deeper into the topic at hand, we realized that women had experienced much prejudice and we in fact were that gender. Scanning through possible topics, we reached the National Organization for Women with their dedication from the start and start of the modernfeminism wave. Our first step in conducting research was the use of the available books in the local public and school library which we received background information on our topic before we became specific. Next, we scanned the VRC databases for specific information that we could use and pasted it into a document of the specific searches we could look at. After coming together to create our specific topic, the searches that we created earlier became in handy. Next we seperated into our own areas of major so that one of us searched the internet for new information and...show more content... Our teachers and advisors helped us incorporate exploration, encounter and exchange into our project as we listened and followed their expertise and instructions. Creating a rough sketch of our exhibit board, we found relevant images that collaborated with our writing. When we thought about the color scheme we thought about the "sad times" of history where women were treated unequally to men but then the "rebellious times" in which women would start to use their voices for their rights. This is where we started to understand the positives and negatives of color and also our exploration, encounter, and exchange. With the theme in mind and guidance from our advisors, we finished our exhibit Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay about Gender Issues in Religion Gender Issues in Religion Amongst the world religions are many different attitudes towards gender issues and sexuality. A hundred years ago, or even a lot less, these different perspectives did not exist, as they were often considered unimportant, as King noted 'until recently little attention has been paid to gender differences and their impact on religious teaching and practice.'[1] With some religions, their scriptures are considered to be infallible and therefore not to be questioned. So the question itself 'are religions sexist' is a fairly new one. Some religions are thought of as being more sexist than others, but then there are also religions that that do not share the shame ideas...show more content... Women are still not allowed to be priests, despite the fact that there are many examples in the Bible of Jesus telling people through parables and other means that everyone is equal. Some Catholics just accept the fact that women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church, as this is the Pope's orders and he is infallible. Nobody seems to dispute that the Pope must be male, firstly because 'Pope' means father and maybe because they know that the idea of a woman becoming Pope is just too unlikely. However there are Catholics that exist who believe in the authority of the Pope but, 'are convinced that the Pope and his advisors in Romeare making a serious mistake by dismissing women as priests.'[3] This website details the reasons for women not being accepted for ordination, but also reasons why this is wrong. Evidence is given that there were a few heretical sects in existence that allowed women to be priests, as well as passages written by various saints that do not condemn the idea of female ordination. It does not seem that the Vatican are going to change their minds on this subject anytime soon, so this is a valid example of a religion maintaining a sexist attitude even when there is opposition. Fortunately, not all of the Christian denominations have taken this stance. The Anglican Church has proved that they take the idea of equality seriously, as in 1992 The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Gender And Sexuality Reflection Paper In the first reflection essay that I wrote for this class, I explained that while I have had a few classes on gender and sexuality, this class has really helped me further my understanding of the topics and has opened my eyes to many other topics and ideas that previous classes were not able to cover. This class really helped me understand other cultures views on gender and sexuality and how not all cultures view gender and sexuality as we do. One idea that I was able to really see and understand is what different cultures expect of males and the traditional gender roles and stereotypes that a lot of males have to deal with. Some of the main roles and stereotypes that males are pushed into include being fertile and having children, being...show more content... He has tried many different medications and a major operation to try and increase his fertility, but so far he has not been able to have a child with his wife (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 316). He is worried that he and his wife will end up experiencing "the stigma of childlessness" (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 317). Along with the ability to reproduce, a man's virility is seen as a large part of his masculinity. Wentzell and Inhorn wrote about a 68–year–old Mexican man who became depressed and suicidal after he had to have his cancerous penis amputated (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 307). The man claimed that "without my penis, I feel that now I'm not a man" and even though he already had many children, not being able to continue having sex makes him unmanly (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 307). In Mexico, men are seen as wanting to dominate and have sex with all women and possibly lower–status men that are available (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 309). The 68–year–old barber Pepe wants to be seen as vigorous and having a lot of sex so he uses Viagra and has sexual relationships with women other than his wife (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 311). The 40–year–old construction worker JosГ© believes that his erectile dysfunction was partially caused by his inability to have successful dating experiences, a successful marriage, or be successful at work (Wentzell & Inhorn 2011: 314). He thinks that because he was not able to do those things, he is being punished for his lack of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Gender Issues Within The Society Essay Gender issues in society have incited growing debates and an analyzing or in a sense "a calling out of" of writers, books, movies, celebrities, historical figures on their views. It is really not a surprise that C.S. Lewis being a popular figure back in time has found his work under scrutiny over his views and writing off women. It is quite easy to dismiss his views as being a product of that time and therefore dismissing any claims on labeling him .To some it is not so easy to simply dismiss him as a product of his time, acquiring him different labels. Lewis because of his beliefs and writing has been too labelled as either a misogynist or a sexist. These two labels while from the same "grouping" there is a distinction between the two. An argument can arise from this, which is was Lewis merely a sexist or was he a misogynist based on his writings and beliefs? Sexism is usually defined as a discrimination based on gender (in this case women), while misogyny comes from two Greek words, "misein", to hate, and "gyne" woman. Sexism is reflected views of socially constructed views of gender like girls cannot be leaders. Misogyny, on the other hand, isn't merely a strong version of sexism it is a "feeling of contempt or anger" one can express at women for challenging the norms of what women should look and act like. As pointed out before different scholars saw his work from this view. In the Daughters of Lilith text, the author represents a view that shows Lewis to be a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Gender Inequality : A Social Problem Gender inequality is a social problem that is widespread in society. It is referred to as the unfair treatment of individuals based on one 's gender. Historically, laws have opposed women to go to school, access certain jobs, and purchase property. Gender inequality has been experience through culture – honor–killing, sex–selective abortion, and society – occupation, gender roles, and education. The social expectations of men and women differ between cultures that are constructed socially and culturally. These expectations are displayed in roles, and behavior believed both by men and women and their interdependent relationships. Gender inequality can be further understood through the structure of sexism. Discrimination takes place in gender inequality for the reason that men and women are treated on the basis of gender alone (Amjad, R., Ashfaq, M., Kousar, R., Saghir, A., 2010). Gender is the socially– constructed role and explanation of relationships between men and women. (Sport & Dev) In my opinion, I define Gender inequality as the unfair treatment amid both sexes. According to Sage Knowledge, "Gender inequality is allowing individuals of different opportunities due to perceived differences based solely on issues of gender." How is it an issue? The source and level of gender inequality differs across the world. Crime against women of gender inequality inhere violence, murder, and rape. • 10. Sexual Harassment And Gender Inequality Social inequality is a pressing issue in society today. It is a problem that is embedded deeply in society and has a harmful and negative impact. It creates an uneven distribution of resources and opportunities in society thereby causing people to be marginalized. There are many categories associated with social inequality. Examples include race, ethnicity, age, gender, power and social class. This paper will examine gender inequality in society. Using an article from the Toronto Star, I will focus on sexual harassment as an issue of gender inequality in the workplace and the impact it has had on the self–esteem as well as opportunities and achievements of women. Gender Inequality can be defined as the unequal treatment and prejudice of a person on the basis of sex and gender roles. Sexual harassment is further defined as any unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favours of verbal, gestural or physical nature and with objectionable overtones which cause discomfort, humiliation, fear or anger (I.L.O, 1958). Gender Inequality is mostly affected by women. In the workplace, schools, political positions and even in families, women are seen as the inferior sex. In Canadian history, it was not until the 1900s women were given equal rights to vote and the 1920s before a woman was elected in parliament. (Smith, 2011) This is to show that gender discrimination has been embedded in society for a very long time and although laws have been made to make sure males and females are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Gender Inequality : Today 's Society Essay Gender inequality has become an ongrowing issue in today's society. This issue begun in early history and has grown over time. In early days it simply began as women not being able to vote or not being able to work. This has improved over time and now women have gained those rights, but there are still inequalities in today's society between genders. When most people think of gender inequality they automatically think of women. Men have also started to become victims of gender inequality. Men are expected to be tough and show no emotion. They are also expected to live up to the standards of other men by doing work that is considered "manly." Having this type of gender gap is impacting today's society greatly. Gender issues are affecting men and women in today's society and a change needs to happen. Women began as the first victims of gender inequality. Gender issues began when women were expected to clean and take care of their families. Chores were also gender oriented; children that were girls were expected to help wash dishes and learn to cook. Women also did not work at all. The very few women who did work were often school teachers, but they did nothing more than that. A woman's main priority was to care for her family and take care of her home. This expectation of women changed over time once women began to work. In today's society it is more common for a woman to work, but she is still expected to take on the motherly role of the house. This role Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Gender Equality : A Well Discussed Issue Essay Joseline Santizo Mrs. Coogan English 101–4 9 December 2015 Women in STEM Gender equality has been a well–discussed issue in recent years. By some people, women are not treated on the same level as men because of preconceived stereotypes and gender roles. However, others have been fighting tirelessly to increase the amount of people who treat women and men equally. Although women are treated more fairly with regards to men today than in the 1950's, there are still many discrepancies between the sexes. One main concern is that the amount of men and women going into science, technology, engineering, and math, STEM, majors and occupations is disproportionate, with the larger amount of entrants being male. Despite the hard work of feminists, women are not pursuing STEM careers because of stereotypes and a specific idea of their gender role, both of which females are exposed to from a young age throughout adulthood. As females grow into women, they are exposed to stereotypes about their own gender and are given one specific mental image of what a female should look and act like. Being a female is most commonly associated with growing up, getting married, having children, and becoming a housewife. If women are reared in an environment where this idea is constantly being reinforced, then those girls are in danger of believing that that is what they must do in order to be viewed as a "woman." This type of environment causes a type of self–fulfilling prophecy for women because Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Gender Issues In College Essay Out of all the fields offered to incoming freshmen in college, I chose engineering. To me, it was an easy choice; I excelled in my high school STEM classes and I'm a problem–solver, which is essentially what an engineer is, just on a bigger scale. In those classes, I took pride in the fact that I was one of few females, and never felt like my gender affected my performance or my opportunities. It wasn't until my civil engineering class that I noticed a change. As one of only two girls in the class, I wasn't treated as an equal by my male classmates. I was faced with both comments on my shorts, body, and personal life, and lessened workload because I "wasn't cut out for the manual labor." I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that I was treated differently though, since only 25 percent of the labor force in STEM fields are women, and only 18–20 percent of engineering students are women. The numbers were, and still are against me,...show more content... Colleges always market their zero tolerance for sexual misconduct; so why is it that these situations are kept secret until a media outlet grabs hold of the story? University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology are prime examples, as they both recently failed to publicly acknowledge their findings that prominent male science professors have harassed female students until the stories had been discovered by news media. When presented with situations like these, colleges seem to default to covering it up and keeping it secret in order to keep their reputation. Personally, I would respect a college more if they acknowledged that one of their professors had sexually harassed students and then were fired, than if they hid the fact until it inevitably came up in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Gender, Gender And Sexuality Essay Gender and Sexuality Gender and sexuality are problematically understood and represented in Australian classrooms because of the presence of gender bias and the marginalisation of sexually diverse students, which reflects the patriarchal society that we live in. It is important to acknowledge that issues related to gender and sexuality are not just issues for older children and teenagers. They are just as applicable to young children who are at a very impressionable and susceptible stage of their lives and are going through the process of forming their own notions of what is acceptable behaviour for males and females (Gobby, 2016b). Carolyn Hannan, Director of the Advancement of Women Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, describes the concept of 'gender order' in her opening keynote speech titled "Challenging the gender order". She states that 'gender order' "could be very simplistically defined as the way society is organised around the roles, responsibilities, activities and contributions of women and men, in other words, what is expected, allowed and encouraged in relation to what women and men do in different contexts" (Hannan, 2006). This notion is linked to the binary perception of gender and sexuality where the ideals and beliefs surrounding masculinity oppose those of femininity (Gobby, 2016b). For example, males are aggressive, females are gentle; females are emotional, males are rational; and males are tough where as females are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. The Issues Of Gender And Sexuality In "Hookers at the Point," the issues of gender and sexuality clearly play an important role in prostitution. Prostitution is one of the most controversial and complex subjects in many parts of the world. Some feminist theorists believe that prostitution is a form of violence against females and others believe is a way for females to be in control of their sexuality. According to sociologist Susie Jacobs, who explores the link between sexuality and gender control, "women's sexuality is regulated in most or all societies and regulation is maintained through the legal sphere, social constraints and punishments" (Jacobs, 2014). Thus, the idea of selling sex is considered linked to a system of male power that represents "the absolute embodiment of patriarchal man privilege" (Kesler, 2002). This cultural stereotype of prostitutes is complicated because the motivation behind prostitution varies. Prostitution cuts through all education levels and classes of life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how prostitution is a gendered paradigm and how its "actors" (prostitutes, johns, and pimps) are "doing gender." Several points will be discussed; first, the lives of prostitutes and how they are doing gender within this patriarchal society will be explored. Second, the reasons johns seek prostitutes and the double standards which disproportionately harm prostitutes and the culture of acceptability of violence. According to feminist theorist, Jane Scoular, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Issues of Race, Class, and Gender Essay The Issues of Race, Class, and Gender Race, Class and Gender issues are commonly brought up. Throughout history many groups have been stigmatized not just for their race, but for their sex, and class as well. People of lower class incomes get slandered for where they live and for not having the economical means to purchase most common goods. Women have been considered the weaker sex for centuries, and currently, some of the old fashioned and ignorant theories on women being subordinate to men prevail. In the article " Rethinking Women's Biology" the author position appeared to be that society dictates what a woman means and teaches it from childhood. The old concept of blue for a boy and pink for a girl starts out from birth and is...show more content... Only giving women 5% of television coverage opposed to men receiving 92%. Sports can trivialize women symbolically. For example, College sport teams may name the male team tigers and the women's team kittens. (Eitzen &Baca Zinn, 1989). Roles were also mentioned as "society's prescriptions for those of their gender status because the norms are expectations get built into their senses worth and identity as a certain kind of human being and because they believe that their society's ways are the natural way." (Lorber,1992, p.42). "Ah, Ya Throw Like a Girl" was similar to the above to articles. It suggested how roles of society predictfemale and male roles. He referred to personal childhood memories. He would be teased and taunted by friends and family if he did not play the sport hard and rough, because that's how boys do it. He also pointed out that his sister was more talented in sports than he but could not play. Basically, this authors position was traditional roles needs to be deleted with a new modern way of thinking. Women should be treated as equals with men in the work place, but that is not always the case. • 19. Gender and Sexuality Essay Males and females are classed differently from the moment they are pronounced boy or girl. Gender determines the differences in power and control in which men and women have over the socioeconomic determinants of their health, lives and status in their community. Our society moulds how men and women should and should not behave and can be observed in all parts of our society. As a result of theseGender stereotypes men and women have issues which affect their health which are unique to each gender. Males for example are perceived to be greater risk takers as a whole in our society than that of females. We represent risk taking behavior with masculinity and violence, high speed driving and contact sport with the male gender. (Doyle 2005)...show more content... Women in the last thirty years or so have fought for equality among the sexes in all forms. The Women?s movement have fought hard to change this socially constructed view of our society. Due to this double burden placed on working mothers there is a far greater demand on their bodies and an increasingly likelihood of illness in many forms as well as psychological trauma such as depression and anxiety due to the constant workload. Females in the past were argued as having a less likelihood of illness because they were not as abundant in the workforce thus giving them more relaxation time. When males retire around the age group of 55 to 65 many of them pass away early due to the dramatic change in lifestyle. They go from five days a week working nine or ten hour days to completely nothing and because they have become so adapted to the working week they change their habits, their lifestyle differs and they develop sickness and health problems. As health is seen as a holistic concept we also have to focus on the psychological side of health. Mental illnesses affect around one in every three people and an individual?s gender is a critical determinant of mental health and mental illness. Women are much more likely to develop mental health problems then males do. The most predominant of these disorders are depression, anxiety and somatic complaints. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

One skill a social worker would need to have and utilize in this situation with biracial children and a same sex couple is cultural competency. "The knowledge and skills that a social worker must develop in order to be effective in dealing with multicultural clients" (Lum, 1999, p. 3).
