Law Enforcement Careers Essay
Introduction To be perfectly honest, when I found out we would be working on a research paper I was a bit nervous because I know I
procrastinate. I tend to leave things for the last minute which just adds unnecessary stress. I had an idea of what I wanted my future career to be but
was still not 100% sure at the time. It was not until I did more research that I decided law enforcement was the career path for me. I feel as though
that's what my destiny is, what I was meant to do. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else, except for the military which also ties into law
enforcement (MP–military police). Recently I was looking through some of my old yearbooks. I came across a page in my fifth grade yearbook. The
title of the page was...show more content...
What made it so easy was that the teacher provided us with a website called Bridges.com. In that site was all the information you were going to
need for the research. If not for that website this project would've been a lot tougher because of the fact that our sources had to be appropriate. For
example, we could not use Wikipedia. There are many websites out there that cannot be trusted to get information from. I have to admit I wasted a
lot of time. We had three weeks and I left it for the last couple of days. I used Bridges.com to find most of my information like salary, training, skills
etc. To my surprise Bridges also provided outside sources in the "connections" tab which we needed for the research. I used Bridges.com, BLS.gov,
myfuture.com and goarmy.com. These sources provided me with everything I needed in order to write this essay.
The Find Law enforcement officers have a variety of tasks that are completed on a daily basis including but not limited to enforcing laws and
ordinances, regulating traffic and controlling crowds. In order to keep us safe and protected they prevent crimes, arrest offenders, patrol the streets
and quickly respond to calls for assistance. They also issue citations or warnings, investigate accidents and testify in court (What They Do). Military
Police officers and civilian police officers are similar in that they must complete the same daily tasks. Unlike civilian police officers MP's also guard

Reflective Essay On Law Enforcement
Law Enforcement is a major part of every society, some people encourage it and some are against it and these people has their own opinion and/or
experience. My position is with Law Enforcement, because I was in situations that made me rethink about my position of police. Having "Guardians"
makes the society safer and better for citizens. My first ever interference with Law enforcement was in the United States, San Diego. I work for a
self–contracting company called "Postmates" which makes you earn living by delivering food from merchant to customers just like "Uber Eats,
Door Dash, Etc...", so I had a late delivery at around 12:30 am on a Friday night, it was a six miles delivery that took around thirty minutes from Point
Loma to Mission Valley and I was going on Friars Road which has a speed limit of fifty miles per hour, and I was going forty–seven miles per hour,
and there it was the sound of the sirens vibrating in my ears, I pulled up to the curb and felt like the night has turned into day because of the bright
top fog light, I can feel the thumping of my heart against my chest. My fingers are curled around the steering wheel as he was walking towards my
car, the Officer: Do you know why I pulled you over today?, I replied by saying: Yes sir, I was speeding, he asked: is there a reason to why your
speeding?. As the Fear torturing my guts, I can't hear my rapid breathing, but I can feel the oxygen flooding in and out of my lungs. I explained to him
my situation and how

The Duty Of Law Enforcement Essay
Every day, law enforcement officers face danger while carrying out their responsibilities. The primary duties of law enforcement officers are to serve
and protect the citizens of the United States. For the most part law enforcement agencies do this effectively. However, many people come to view law
enforcement officers as the enemy. As an enemy that has the sole purpose of oppressing and harming the very people they are tasked to protect. The
people need to be better informed about the police and why an officer will take certain actions in a given situation. In our society, police are in a very
precarious situation when it comes to the amount of force they can apply when dealing with a civilian suspect. Whether it be physical force,
persuasion, or coercion; they must use discretion when deciding what course of action best suits the situation. They must take the precise course of
action to fit the time, because if they are too lenient or to forceful, even when dealing with the pettiest things, they can be chastised by superiors and
public, even laid off. Must police use force? If so, under what circumstances and what should define the limits of force they can use? These questions
can guide the police when using the force they sometimes must exert on civilians.
The majority of the populace has many misconceptions pertaining to law enforcement agencies. Some people believe police should not have the power
to use force, no matter what the situation. They believe

Role Of Culture In Law Enforcement
The challenge for law enforcement and cultural awareness worldwide, more unique than in any other profession because of the power held by police,
creates a special need for understanding a pluralistic, multicultural worldwide society. The very success of the many facets of community–based
policing is dependent on this awareness. Understanding the importance of culture and the role that police play is not new. Law enforcement agencies
throughout the world are becoming more concerned with their image within their own countries as well as their reputations for professionalism with
the rest of the world. Now more than ever agencies are looking to fill their ranks with a diverse officer corps that reflects the populations they serve.
This includes...show more content...
Such discriminations impedes effective policing in these communities by breaking down trust, inhibiting communication, and preventing officers
from effectively protecting and serving the community. Departments are now requiring officers to go through sensitivity training on how to
properly handle and communicate with those who are transgender. The training will help law enforcement agencies improve their understanding of
the transgender communities they serve and improve their work with those communities. Many gay and lesbian police officers still fear the
consequences of revealing their sexuality as they rise through the ranks, according to new research. The police service has come a long way, as has
society, and that has to be acknowledged. But there is more to be done. Sadly, some police officers and staff are not confident being out in their
police forces, particularly as they rise through the ranks, and some fear homophobia still exists in areas of policing. The police should reflect the
public they serve and more gay and lesbian role models are needed, to help improve the confidence of some LGBT communities in policing. To have
diversity among departments, proper steps must be taken in order to recruit those who want to serve for the right

Law Enforcement and Ethics Essay
Ethics play a huge role in a police officers line of work. Since police are given such a high degree of trust and authority, it can unfortunately be very
easy for an officer to fall into some unethical behavior. This can range from just minor acts that are frowned upon, to actual downright illegal activity.
Even though there are a countless number of acts and behaviors that can be considered unethical, in the following paper I will focus primarily on those
incidents involving police officers who steal for their own personal gain, and discuss my position on the issue.
An event that definitely can be seen as being unethical involves a twenty–three year old former Phoenix, Arizona Police Officer. While on–duty and in
full uniform, Officer...show more content...
After successfully committing both thefts, Wren and Mardjaee went their separate ways for a year and a half. At some point, the Avondale Police
Department used Mardjaee as a confidential Informant. There the department asked him if he knew about any police corruption. Mardjaee revealed his
secrets and discussed Wrens involvement in the thefts. The police later used him to set–up Officer Wren in an undercover sting. They had Mardjaee
call Wren and he told him about a "Big One" that he wanted to pull off. The two men then made their plans to pull over another dealer.
On June 10, 2010 at around 10 p.m. Officer Wren stopped a vehicle that he thought was the suspected drug dealer at the 6300 block of West
McDowell Road (1). He spoke briefly with the driver, who was unknowingly an undercover officer that had $40,000 inside the vehicle. The driver
claimed that he didn't know English. Officer Wren became suspicious about whether or not the driver was actually a drug dealer, and had a gut feeling
that it was in fact an undercover officer. Once Wren had run the vehicle identification number (VIN), the computer returned the company's name that
was used for unmarked vehicles. Wren's Stomach was turning and he asked the driver what was going on. The undercover officer would not break his
character and Wren just told the driver to leave. At that point Officer Wren was under surveillance by both a helicopter and numerous other

Police Training: A Modern Approach
This research paper will examine the idea that traditional police training methods are inefficient for modern adult learners and new methods and
techniques need to be utilized to ensure that today's police force remains highly trained, professional and effective. The theory behind my thesis
statement is that police officers are starting their law enforcement careers later in life (Mineard, 2006), are more diverse, have higher education and
more life experiences. In the past, police officers were minimally trained, entered their careers at...show more content...
Many of those drawn to police work had spent time in the military during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, so it was a natural progression to take into
account the background of law enforcement applicants and for police agencies to apply military style training to their officers. Law enforcement
agencies knew that they could review a veteran's military background and know what type of person they would be hiring, instead of hiring someone
with no measurable background. The new police officers came from a background of rank structure and following orders without question
(McCafferty, 2003, p.79). While this training approach made it easier for the law enforcement leaders, it was not the perfect approach for law
enforcement and public interaction. Since police officers expected the public to respond as they were trained to respond – without questioning
authority – pressure was put on law enforcement agencies to take on a less militaristic approach when dealing with the public. When the public refused
to respond to law enforcement without question, conflict arose. Conflict erupted with riots in the south and in areas such as Watts, California. There
were two diametrically opposed groups; law enforcement who expected compliance without question and the public who expected accountability and
explanations on the part of law enforcement. Change

How To Respect Law Enforcement Essay
The world of Law Enforcement is something that often gets laughed at, especially in this day and age. People don't respect Law Enforcement, or
even care about them, as much as they actually should. After all, who comes to find the culprit if your home has been burglarized? Or what about a
loved one being killed, who finds the murderer? There are so many things that everyday citizens forget about, things that happen more often than
we'd like to admit, and we should be thankful that we have people to deal with all of it for us. Why would you let the action, poor judgement, or
any mistake of one single person affect the way you see an entire group? That's like saying every German is a Nazi, and they all hate Jews. At what
point did respect for Law Enforcement change, and why? I think that partially, it has changed because of how the world all...show more content...
They were trained to serve and protect, but that doesn't mean that they won't mess up from time to time. Now, I am not sticking up for those who
don't deserve it, and I will admit that there are some Officers in the world that shouldn't have a badge anymore. But when you look at the whole of
Law Enforcement, people have to realise that not every single Officer is racist. Not every Officer has the same exact mindset, or opinions of
things. We are all people, and every single person is different in their own ways. There are no reasons for you to judge a single Officer, because of
the actions and words done by another Officer. If you were a waitress at a diner, and your fellow waitresses are very rude and disrespectful.. How
would you feel, if every customer that came in, assumed that you were just as rude? Or what if you worked for the Department of Homeland Security,
and people automatically assumed that you just wanted to make their day horrible? It isn't great to be labeled, and thrown into a group of people when

The Principles of Police Leadership Essay
All organizations, especially law enforcement agencies, require leadership. Maintaining a dependable leadership structure is key to the success of any
organization. The philosophy of the modern style of police leadership involves a leader who is strong, competitive and unreceptive to change. Police
leadership is based from an autocratic style which is founded on integrity and courage, embracing teamwork, involvement and shared leadership
(Cordner & Scarborough, 2010). This style of leadership works well in an emergency situation in which rapid decision making and strict control is
needed. The negative aspect to this style of leadership is the inability of the organization to function with the absence of leadership. A...show more

This method of crime prevention gave way to the idea that it was better to be proactive than wait until after a crime has been committed. The strategy of
using preventative patrol was how law enforcement eventually achieved deterrence. This English method also contributed three features: limited police
authority, local control of the police agency, and a fragmented system of law enforcement (Walker, 1983). A fragmented system of law enforcement is
very evident today. The United States currently has approximately 15,000 different police agencies. These individual police agencies are subject to
little coordination with minimal national regulation (Walker, 1983).
Research / Analysis The style of police leadership has gradually changed over the last several years. The traditional belief that the solitary leader
who possessed the wisdom, integrity, and courage to manage a police department, or a shift of officers has been replaced with the concept of
teamwork (Wuestewald, 2013). The idea of using a team to manage an organization is nothing new in the private sector, however, replacing the old
idea of a solitary leader has taken time and is slow to take hold in some organizations. A 2006 case study of the benefits of shared management in
police agencies was conducted on the Broken Arrow Police Department (BAPD). The BAPD is a police department which employs 165 persons in
Oklahoma. A focus of the study was to shift the police

Essay on Law Enforcement and Leadership
Introduction
Police leadership uses standardization and procedure as a way to create consistency and predict¬ability in law enforcement operations (Batts, Smoot,
& Scrivner, 2012). The San Diego Police Department, like nearly all law enforcement agencies uses leadership models mimicking the United States
military. Paramilitary organizations use highly structured framing to conduct business operations. The structural frame creates compartmentalized
specialization, and predictable, uniform task performance desired by police executives. The tightly designed rank–and–file structure delineates locus
power and control based on position (Bolman & Deal, 1991). Power rests at the top. Contained with this structure is top–down control of personnel,

Line–level law enforcement officers, investigators supervisors, and police executives are more educated and sophisticated with technology in their
arsenal to enhance job performance. Despite having better education, training, equipment, access to specialized resources, and information, law
enforcement agencies struggle with sharing power with their workforce. The result of this failure to modernize leaves law enforcement officers going
through the motions and working at less than maximum efficiency.
Purpose/Assessment of the need
The goal of project was to adapt an existing work group with the purpose of comparing and contrasting task oriented leadership communication models
utilized in paramilitary organizations to relationship based leadership communication. Paramilitary structured organizations use outdated leadership
models. Transformative leadership model utilizing shared power and collaboration was used to answer the question of relationship based leadership is
as effective within a highly structured work groups accustomed to top down, high direction, low–task oriented leadership.
Law enforcement agencies in the United States reliance on the paramilitary structure model of the industrial and manufacturing era has become
increasingly outdated and ineffective (Batts, Smoot, & Scrivner, 2012). Despite the change law enforcement agencies remain slow to adapt to

Women in Law Enforcement Essay
Gender inequality still plays a huge role in today's society. Women comprise only a small percentage of the local law enforcement agencies across
the nation. Women have been a part of law enforcement since the 20th century but have only been noticed within the last 40 years. Back in the 1970's
women rarely held positions in law enforcement and if they did it was mainly clerical/desk positions. Even though the amount of women in law
enforcement today has increased, women still only make up roughly around 13 percent of the law enforcement work force (Public). Women can make
such an impact in the Law Enforcement field if given a fair chance but they may face many problems when doing so. Some say that women don't
belong, while others suggest...show more content...
Although physical strength has not been studied as a downfall for law enforcement, it merely weeds out potentially good women (Challenges). The
physical comparability is one of the issues that cause the most concern. A lot of people will immediately look at a strong male versus a strong female
and suggest they feel safer with the male officer. Society made us believe that a male will be more protective in many if not all incidents of criminal
behavior. "However, women offer an underlying physical advantage making them just as competent as their male competitors. Women tend to use a
style of policing that relies more on communication rather than physical force. Women have been accredited for a more community–oriented style of
policing and thus more effective at handling domestic disturbances or violent incidents. Women are better at diffusing a situation; they tend to listen
more before they react, women have also been recognized for using less excessive force than men. Although men may look bigger and stronger women
have a different strength and just as productive way of protecting people. Women tend to use more speed and technique instead of the physical route
that men typically turn too (Challenges)." Aside from the physical aspects, most argue that another big issue with women in law enforcement is they
can't handle the emotional aspects this job brings. Most people assume that women have less of a tolerance when it comes to the

social demands of the public with the crime becoming more organized and showing new challenges ahead. This paper will go over the three common
functions police perform such as crime control, order maintenance and social work.
Crime Control Crime control is one of the major things police are responsible for in my option." In textbooks, college courses, and police training

The social media has become a way for criminals to contact each other and coordinate their criminal acts. By this happening it creates another place
that police departments around the country have to find ways of policing it. While this becomes harder for law enforcement, luckily they have
technology out there that will help in doing this. When criminals use the internet they leave a trail that law enforcement can follow in the apprehension
or conviction by using their trail as evidence against them. The police can also identify threats and patterns of the criminals using the internet. Even

Why Law Enforcement Is Important? Essay
By 1631 a group of men was organized to conduct patrols throughout the night in the colony of Boston. During the nightly patrols, the men were
intending to provide safety and security to the community by maintaining order, raising the alarm for hazardous fires, and apprehending those guilty of
criminal activities (Hess, Orthmann, & Cho, 2014). These men formed the earliest known policing organization in America's thirteen original colonies,
a foundation for modern policing in the United States. Today, law enforcement officers strive to protect and serve a community through monitoring and
responding to criminal activities; conducting both motorized and foot patrols to deter crime; issuing tickets; responding to emergency calls;
investigating crimes that have occurred and arresting those who are reasonably suspected of a crime; and testify in court as needed.
Law enforcement is undoubtedly a unique profession. Like few other occupations, law enforcement is a profession with a culture of its own developed
through socialization exclusive to its members only. Socialization can be used to describe the social interaction and the adaption of a new culture that
occurs from the moment a recruit begins training at the Police Academy that is carried on through that individual's career within law enforcement.
Police culture characteristics include the shared beliefs, customs, ways of life, particular ways of thinking, and standards that govern behavior that

Why Law Enforcement Is Important Essay
This information is important because without cooperating law enforcement wouldn't be able to exist because cooperation is what builds up the team

challenges. Police officers are required to get 120 hours of training and the most specific required one is firearms shoot don't shoot scenarios use of

Diversity In Law Enforcement Essay
Diversity is a key ingredient for law enforcement agencies to be effective in policing society today and in the future. For agencies to increase
recruitment of minorities and women, policies and perceptions must change. Militaristic styles, disparity in testing, discrimination, and continued
barriers for reporting harassment must be changed in order for agencies to recruit women and minorities. One factor in recruiting women and minorities
is that agencies must actively recruit them. The agency should promote community policing efforts to build stronger relationships with all people
groups that are in the agencies' jurisdiction. Enhancing officer relationships within the community would likewise positively effect minority
perceptions and distrust of law enforcement. Many industries actively recruit minorities and women using many types of incentives, law enforcement
must learn to employ those same techniques. Another barrier to hiring minorities and women is...show more content...
Women are made to feel inadequate in comparison to their male counterparts due to the militaristic image that has dominated the profession. Although
research has proven that women officers are as effective as their male counterparts, women continually face open discrimination inside the department.
Promotions for women are limited despite an ever increasing need for women to fill supervisory positions. Women identify the promotion as image
enhancement for the department and not performance based; perceiving that other officers would not respect this advancement for its merits.
Minorities also face the same barriers despite legal advancements to the contrary. To ensure the future of law enforcement, barriers and biases must be
broken. Women and minorities should be viewed as valuable assets and equals in the department and equal opportunities based on merit should be

Researching the cause, effect and treatments of PTSD within law enforcement is important because not only are these officers members of the
community that deserve to live a happy life but they also have a family and they risk their lives daily, even hourly to make sure that everyone around

Introduction: Causes and Effects Posttraumatic Stress Disorder also known as PTSD is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event,
either experiencing it or witnessing it. When one experiences PTSD, symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as
uncontrollable thoughts about the event (Mayo Clinic). It is easy to take a look across the occupational spectrum and see that Law Enforcement is a

Although some officers do not seek or receive help and never end up developing PTSD, there are some officers that receive treatment that doesn't come
close to helping. After traumatic events occur while on the job, police departments need to implement treatment so that the officers involved can
relieve their overwhelming feeling after the event, "if this is not discharged, then people become habitually distanced from their emotions, and do not
have the full range of emotional breadth and depth (Rese and Smith 274)". This is where departments fail, by dismissing trauma counseling and
overlooking the seriousness the effects some of these calls and events that their officers go through only hurt the department in the long run. If an
officer doesn't receive the therapy or debriefing after an event they can lash out, use excessive amount of force in the future while on the job or even at

Police officers pull drivers over for a number of reasons, ranging from driving recklessly to suspicion of possessing illegal substances. Traffic stops
pose stress onto police officers because of its hazards. First, police officers risk the chance of getting hit by incoming traffic. According to the
National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, over 150 U.S. Law enforcement officers were killed since 1999 by getting struck by
vehicles along America's highways (National Safety Commission, 2012). When a police officer pulls over a driver, he or she is focused on
documenting information on the incident report, leaving him or her open to the risk of getting hit by incoming vehicles. Second, police officers are
caught in a dilemma when making a traffic stop. Chances are that drivers stopped try to injure or even kill the officer. Yet, officers are expected to
maintain friendliness at best or neutral at worst. Police officers lower their guard when they approach the driver in a friendly manner. If the officer
adopts a continuous friendly approach, they may find themselves attacked by hostile citizens or worst, killed because of losing one's guard. Though,
the friendly approach has its risks, the defensive approach has its consequences. When a police officer approaches the driver with a guarded attitude,
the officer will most likely forget the goal of cooperating with the driver. Instead

Essay On Centralized Law Enforcement
Over the years, the debate on whether the Department of Law Enforcement in U.S. should be centralized or not continues to be a contentious issue.
Both centralized and decentralized forms of administration have their own advantages as well as disadvantages. The U.S. currently has a decentralized
police administration structure, which has received equal measure of admiration as well as criticism. As a member of Congress, my staff assistant's
proposal to nationalize law enforcement throughout the United States brings with it meaningful insights which need to be analyzed before coming up
with an informed conclusion. This essay will therefore analyze some of the benefits of such a proposal, as well as the shortcomings, not forgetting how
different groups will perceive it.

This will lead to accountability problems whereby the police can misuse the public funds. The public need to have their say on police operations in

corruption activities, abuse of power and indiscipline as the public is not holding them accountable as much as it should be. Another crucial problem
will be exploitation and manipulation from the central government. Since a centralized police department will be receiving funds and other resources
from the national government, the political leaders at the top of the federal government might start using their influence and power to manipulate
police operations.
Positive Aspects Nationalizing Law Enforcement

Women in Law Enforcement
There are many stereotypes that women in the law enforcement field have to face. In order to recruit more women into policing, law enforcement
agencies should attempt to overcome the idea that policing is a "male–oriented profession". This paper will cover parts of the history of women police
officers, some views and stereotypes of the female officer, job related issues, life outside of the workforce and job satisfaction.

In many communities, women never have the opportunity to see female officers as role models. For this reason, most women had not really
considered policing as a career. "But policewoman's presence was still not wholly welcome, they were there because chiefs succumbed to pressure
from outside reform groups, not because male administrators or officers saw any need for them. Policewomen's allies remained other male and female
social workers, progressives, clubwomen, and other reformers." (Miller, 1999)
Employment opportunities for the female police officer are large. Women will be recruited for many jobs in the field to expand the pool of
potential sworn officer. It should be a goal off policing to recruit females so they can be recognized on the streets, making it more of a position that

Law Enforcement Careers Essay

  • 1. Law Enforcement Careers Essay Introduction To be perfectly honest, when I found out we would be working on a research paper I was a bit nervous because I know I procrastinate. I tend to leave things for the last minute which just adds unnecessary stress. I had an idea of what I wanted my future career to be but was still not 100% sure at the time. It was not until I did more research that I decided law enforcement was the career path for me. I feel as though that's what my destiny is, what I was meant to do. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else, except for the military which also ties into law enforcement (MP–military police). Recently I was looking through some of my old yearbooks. I came across a page in my fifth grade yearbook. The title of the page was...show more content... What made it so easy was that the teacher provided us with a website called Bridges.com. In that site was all the information you were going to need for the research. If not for that website this project would've been a lot tougher because of the fact that our sources had to be appropriate. For example, we could not use Wikipedia. There are many websites out there that cannot be trusted to get information from. I have to admit I wasted a lot of time. We had three weeks and I left it for the last couple of days. I used Bridges.com to find most of my information like salary, training, skills etc. To my surprise Bridges also provided outside sources in the "connections" tab which we needed for the research. I used Bridges.com, BLS.gov, myfuture.com and goarmy.com. These sources provided me with everything I needed in order to write this essay. The Find Law enforcement officers have a variety of tasks that are completed on a daily basis including but not limited to enforcing laws and ordinances, regulating traffic and controlling crowds. In order to keep us safe and protected they prevent crimes, arrest offenders, patrol the streets and quickly respond to calls for assistance. They also issue citations or warnings, investigate accidents and testify in court (What They Do). Military Police officers and civilian police officers are similar in that they must complete the same daily tasks. Unlike civilian police officers MP's also guard military bases Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflective Essay On Law Enforcement Law Enforcement is a major part of every society, some people encourage it and some are against it and these people has their own opinion and/or experience. My position is with Law Enforcement, because I was in situations that made me rethink about my position of police. Having "Guardians" makes the society safer and better for citizens. My first ever interference with Law enforcement was in the United States, San Diego. I work for a self–contracting company called "Postmates" which makes you earn living by delivering food from merchant to customers just like "Uber Eats, Door Dash, Etc...", so I had a late delivery at around 12:30 am on a Friday night, it was a six miles delivery that took around thirty minutes from Point Loma to Mission Valley and I was going on Friars Road which has a speed limit of fifty miles per hour, and I was going forty–seven miles per hour, and there it was the sound of the sirens vibrating in my ears, I pulled up to the curb and felt like the night has turned into day because of the bright top fog light, I can feel the thumping of my heart against my chest. My fingers are curled around the steering wheel as he was walking towards my car, the Officer: Do you know why I pulled you over today?, I replied by saying: Yes sir, I was speeding, he asked: is there a reason to why your speeding?. As the Fear torturing my guts, I can't hear my rapid breathing, but I can feel the oxygen flooding in and out of my lungs. I explained to him my situation and how Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Duty Of Law Enforcement Essay Every day, law enforcement officers face danger while carrying out their responsibilities. The primary duties of law enforcement officers are to serve and protect the citizens of the United States. For the most part law enforcement agencies do this effectively. However, many people come to view law enforcement officers as the enemy. As an enemy that has the sole purpose of oppressing and harming the very people they are tasked to protect. The people need to be better informed about the police and why an officer will take certain actions in a given situation. In our society, police are in a very precarious situation when it comes to the amount of force they can apply when dealing with a civilian suspect. Whether it be physical force, persuasion, or coercion; they must use discretion when deciding what course of action best suits the situation. They must take the precise course of action to fit the time, because if they are too lenient or to forceful, even when dealing with the pettiest things, they can be chastised by superiors and public, even laid off. Must police use force? If so, under what circumstances and what should define the limits of force they can use? These questions can guide the police when using the force they sometimes must exert on civilians. The majority of the populace has many misconceptions pertaining to law enforcement agencies. Some people believe police should not have the power to use force, no matter what the situation. They believe Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Role Of Culture In Law Enforcement The challenge for law enforcement and cultural awareness worldwide, more unique than in any other profession because of the power held by police, creates a special need for understanding a pluralistic, multicultural worldwide society. The very success of the many facets of community–based policing is dependent on this awareness. Understanding the importance of culture and the role that police play is not new. Law enforcement agencies throughout the world are becoming more concerned with their image within their own countries as well as their reputations for professionalism with the rest of the world. Now more than ever agencies are looking to fill their ranks with a diverse officer corps that reflects the populations they serve. This includes...show more content... Such discriminations impedes effective policing in these communities by breaking down trust, inhibiting communication, and preventing officers from effectively protecting and serving the community. Departments are now requiring officers to go through sensitivity training on how to properly handle and communicate with those who are transgender. The training will help law enforcement agencies improve their understanding of the transgender communities they serve and improve their work with those communities. Many gay and lesbian police officers still fear the consequences of revealing their sexuality as they rise through the ranks, according to new research. The police service has come a long way, as has society, and that has to be acknowledged. But there is more to be done. Sadly, some police officers and staff are not confident being out in their police forces, particularly as they rise through the ranks, and some fear homophobia still exists in areas of policing. The police should reflect the public they serve and more gay and lesbian role models are needed, to help improve the confidence of some LGBT communities in policing. To have diversity among departments, proper steps must be taken in order to recruit those who want to serve for the right Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Law Enforcement and Ethics Essay Ethics play a huge role in a police officers line of work. Since police are given such a high degree of trust and authority, it can unfortunately be very easy for an officer to fall into some unethical behavior. This can range from just minor acts that are frowned upon, to actual downright illegal activity. Even though there are a countless number of acts and behaviors that can be considered unethical, in the following paper I will focus primarily on those incidents involving police officers who steal for their own personal gain, and discuss my position on the issue. An event that definitely can be seen as being unethical involves a twenty–three year old former Phoenix, Arizona Police Officer. While on–duty and in full uniform, Officer...show more content... After successfully committing both thefts, Wren and Mardjaee went their separate ways for a year and a half. At some point, the Avondale Police Department used Mardjaee as a confidential Informant. There the department asked him if he knew about any police corruption. Mardjaee revealed his secrets and discussed Wrens involvement in the thefts. The police later used him to set–up Officer Wren in an undercover sting. They had Mardjaee call Wren and he told him about a "Big One" that he wanted to pull off. The two men then made their plans to pull over another dealer. On June 10, 2010 at around 10 p.m. Officer Wren stopped a vehicle that he thought was the suspected drug dealer at the 6300 block of West McDowell Road (1). He spoke briefly with the driver, who was unknowingly an undercover officer that had $40,000 inside the vehicle. The driver claimed that he didn't know English. Officer Wren became suspicious about whether or not the driver was actually a drug dealer, and had a gut feeling that it was in fact an undercover officer. Once Wren had run the vehicle identification number (VIN), the computer returned the company's name that was used for unmarked vehicles. Wren's Stomach was turning and he asked the driver what was going on. The undercover officer would not break his character and Wren just told the driver to leave. • 6. Police Training: a Modern Approach Essay Police Training: A Modern Approach American Military University CMRJ499 Criminal Justice Senior Seminar April 26, 2011 Police Training: A Modern Approach This research paper will examine the idea that traditional police training methods are inefficient for modern adult learners and new methods and techniques need to be utilized to ensure that today's police force remains highly trained, professional and effective. The theory behind my thesis statement is that police officers are starting their law enforcement careers later in life (Mineard, 2006), are more diverse, have higher education and more life experiences. In the past, police officers were minimally trained, entered their careers at...show more content... Many of those drawn to police work had spent time in the military during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, so it was a natural progression to take into account the background of law enforcement applicants and for police agencies to apply military style training to their officers. Law enforcement agencies knew that they could review a veteran's military background and know what type of person they would be hiring, instead of hiring someone with no measurable background. The new police officers came from a background of rank structure and following orders without question (McCafferty, 2003, p.79). While this training approach made it easier for the law enforcement leaders, it was not the perfect approach for law enforcement and public interaction. Since police officers expected the public to respond as they were trained to respond – without questioning authority – pressure was put on law enforcement agencies to take on a less militaristic approach when dealing with the public. When the public refused to respond to law enforcement without question, conflict arose. Conflict erupted with riots in the south and in areas such as Watts, California. There were two diametrically opposed groups; law enforcement who expected compliance without question and the public who expected accountability and explanations on the part of law enforcement. • 8. How To Respect Law Enforcement Essay The world of Law Enforcement is something that often gets laughed at, especially in this day and age. People don't respect Law Enforcement, or even care about them, as much as they actually should. After all, who comes to find the culprit if your home has been burglarized? Or what about a loved one being killed, who finds the murderer? There are so many things that everyday citizens forget about, things that happen more often than we'd like to admit, and we should be thankful that we have people to deal with all of it for us. Why would you let the action, poor judgement, or any mistake of one single person affect the way you see an entire group? That's like saying every German is a Nazi, and they all hate Jews. At what point did respect for Law Enforcement change, and why? I think that partially, it has changed because of how the world all...show more content... They were trained to serve and protect, but that doesn't mean that they won't mess up from time to time. Now, I am not sticking up for those who don't deserve it, and I will admit that there are some Officers in the world that shouldn't have a badge anymore. But when you look at the whole of Law Enforcement, people have to realise that not every single Officer is racist. Not every Officer has the same exact mindset, or opinions of things. We are all people, and every single person is different in their own ways. There are no reasons for you to judge a single Officer, because of the actions and words done by another Officer. If you were a waitress at a diner, and your fellow waitresses are very rude and disrespectful.. How would you feel, if every customer that came in, assumed that you were just as rude? Or what if you worked for the Department of Homeland Security, and people automatically assumed that you just wanted to make their day horrible? It isn't great to be labeled, and thrown into a group of people when that's not who you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. The Principles of Police Leadership Essay All organizations, especially law enforcement agencies, require leadership. Maintaining a dependable leadership structure is key to the success of any organization. The philosophy of the modern style of police leadership involves a leader who is strong, competitive and unreceptive to change. Police leadership is based from an autocratic style which is founded on integrity and courage, embracing teamwork, involvement and shared leadership (Cordner & Scarborough, 2010). This style of leadership works well in an emergency situation in which rapid decision making and strict control is needed. The negative aspect to this style of leadership is the inability of the organization to function with the absence of leadership. A...show more content... This method of crime prevention gave way to the idea that it was better to be proactive than wait until after a crime has been committed. The strategy of using preventative patrol was how law enforcement eventually achieved deterrence. This English method also contributed three features: limited police authority, local control of the police agency, and a fragmented system of law enforcement (Walker, 1983). A fragmented system of law enforcement is very evident today. The United States currently has approximately 15,000 different police agencies. These individual police agencies are subject to little coordination with minimal national regulation (Walker, 1983). Research / Analysis The style of police leadership has gradually changed over the last several years. The traditional belief that the solitary leader who possessed the wisdom, integrity, and courage to manage a police department, or a shift of officers has been replaced with the concept of teamwork (Wuestewald, 2013). The idea of using a team to manage an organization is nothing new in the private sector, however, replacing the old idea of a solitary leader has taken time and is slow to take hold in some organizations. A 2006 case study of the benefits of shared management in police agencies was conducted on the Broken Arrow Police Department (BAPD). The BAPD is a police department which employs 165 persons in Oklahoma. A focus of the study was to shift the police Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay on Law Enforcement and Leadership Introduction Police leadership uses standardization and procedure as a way to create consistency and predictВ¬ability in law enforcement operations (Batts, Smoot, & Scrivner, 2012). The San Diego Police Department, like nearly all law enforcement agencies uses leadership models mimicking the United States military. Paramilitary organizations use highly structured framing to conduct business operations. The structural frame creates compartmentalized specialization, and predictable, uniform task performance desired by police executives. The tightly designed rank–and–file structure delineates locus power and control based on position (Bolman & Deal, 1991). Power rests at the top. Contained with this structure is top–down control of personnel, ...show more content... Line–level law enforcement officers, investigators supervisors, and police executives are more educated and sophisticated with technology in their arsenal to enhance job performance. Despite having better education, training, equipment, access to specialized resources, and information, law enforcement agencies struggle with sharing power with their workforce. The result of this failure to modernize leaves law enforcement officers going through the motions and working at less than maximum efficiency. Purpose/Assessment of the need The goal of project was to adapt an existing work group with the purpose of comparing and contrasting task oriented leadership communication models utilized in paramilitary organizations to relationship based leadership communication. Paramilitary structured organizations use outdated leadership models. Transformative leadership model utilizing shared power and collaboration was used to answer the question of relationship based leadership is as effective within a highly structured work groups accustomed to top down, high direction, low–task oriented leadership. Law enforcement agencies in the United States reliance on the paramilitary structure model of the industrial and manufacturing era has become increasingly outdated and ineffective (Batts, Smoot, & Scrivner, 2012). • 11. Women in Law Enforcement Essay Gender inequality still plays a huge role in today's society. Women comprise only a small percentage of the local law enforcement agencies across the nation. Women have been a part of law enforcement since the 20th century but have only been noticed within the last 40 years. Back in the 1970's women rarely held positions in law enforcement and if they did it was mainly clerical/desk positions. Even though the amount of women in law enforcement today has increased, women still only make up roughly around 13 percent of the law enforcement work force (Public). Women can make such an impact in the Law Enforcement field if given a fair chance but they may face many problems when doing so. Some say that women don't belong, while others suggest...show more content... Although physical strength has not been studied as a downfall for law enforcement, it merely weeds out potentially good women (Challenges). The physical comparability is one of the issues that cause the most concern. A lot of people will immediately look at a strong male versus a strong female and suggest they feel safer with the male officer. Society made us believe that a male will be more protective in many if not all incidents of criminal behavior. "However, women offer an underlying physical advantage making them just as competent as their male competitors. Women tend to use a style of policing that relies more on communication rather than physical force. Women have been accredited for a more community–oriented style of policing and thus more effective at handling domestic disturbances or violent incidents. Women are better at diffusing a situation; they tend to listen more before they react, women have also been recognized for using less excessive force than men. Although men may look bigger and stronger women have a different strength and just as productive way of protecting people. Women tend to use more speed and technique instead of the physical route that men typically turn too (Challenges)." Aside from the physical aspects, most argue that another big issue with women in law enforcement is they can't handle the emotional aspects this job brings. Most people assume that women have less of a tolerance when it comes to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Major Changes In Law Enforcement Introduction There have been numerous changes in law enforcement throughout the years. Law enforcement has had to meet the environment and the social demands of the public with the crime becoming more organized and showing new challenges ahead. This paper will go over the three common functions police perform such as crime control, order maintenance and social work. Crime Control Crime control is one of the major things police are responsible for in my option." In textbooks, college courses, and police training programs, it became common to find police work described as primarily involving order maintenance, services, or social work. The social media has become a way for criminals to contact each other and coordinate their criminal acts. By this happening it creates another place that police departments around the country have to find ways of policing it. While this becomes harder for law enforcement, luckily they have technology out there that will help in doing this. When criminals use the internet they leave a trail that law enforcement can follow in the apprehension or conviction by using their trail as evidence against them. The police can also identify threats and patterns of the criminals using the internet. Even though technology has its benefits within policing by helping with programs, the field officers, investigations, community relations and their safety and the wide spread of sharing information between different law enforcement. Law enforcement has to be able to come up with new technology to keep up with the advance technology the criminals come out with to use against society. • 14. Why Law Enforcement Is Important? Essay By 1631 a group of men was organized to conduct patrols throughout the night in the colony of Boston. During the nightly patrols, the men were intending to provide safety and security to the community by maintaining order, raising the alarm for hazardous fires, and apprehending those guilty of criminal activities (Hess, Orthmann, & Cho, 2014). These men formed the earliest known policing organization in America's thirteen original colonies, a foundation for modern policing in the United States. Today, law enforcement officers strive to protect and serve a community through monitoring and responding to criminal activities; conducting both motorized and foot patrols to deter crime; issuing tickets; responding to emergency calls; investigating crimes that have occurred and arresting those who are reasonably suspected of a crime; and testify in court as needed. Law enforcement is undoubtedly a unique profession. Like few other occupations, law enforcement is a profession with a culture of its own developed through socialization exclusive to its members only. Socialization can be used to describe the social interaction and the adaption of a new culture that occurs from the moment a recruit begins training at the Police Academy that is carried on through that individual's career within law enforcement. Police culture characteristics include the shared beliefs, customs, ways of life, particular ways of thinking, and standards that govern behavior that exists in a police Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Why Law Enforcement Is Important Essay This information is important because without cooperating law enforcement wouldn't be able to exist because cooperation is what builds up the team and the team helps to fight crimes that are committed. Police officers face challenges on a daily basis, but sometimes they have to face deadly challenges. Police officers are required to get 120 hours of training and the most specific required one is firearms shoot don't shoot scenarios use of force and legal training this requirement helps them prepare for any deadly movement, they might have to have while in duty but many officers finish without having to use deadly force ("Myths/Facts"). • 16. Diversity In Law Enforcement Essay Diversity is a key ingredient for law enforcement agencies to be effective in policing society today and in the future. For agencies to increase recruitment of minorities and women, policies and perceptions must change. Militaristic styles, disparity in testing, discrimination, and continued barriers for reporting harassment must be changed in order for agencies to recruit women and minorities. One factor in recruiting women and minorities is that agencies must actively recruit them. The agency should promote community policing efforts to build stronger relationships with all people groups that are in the agencies' jurisdiction. Enhancing officer relationships within the community would likewise positively effect minority perceptions and distrust of law enforcement. Many industries actively recruit minorities and women using many types of incentives, law enforcement must learn to employ those same techniques. Another barrier to hiring minorities and women is...show more content... Women are made to feel inadequate in comparison to their male counterparts due to the militaristic image that has dominated the profession. Although research has proven that women officers are as effective as their male counterparts, women continually face open discrimination inside the department. Promotions for women are limited despite an ever increasing need for women to fill supervisory positions. Women identify the promotion as image enhancement for the department and not performance based; perceiving that other officers would not respect this advancement for its merits. Minorities also face the same barriers despite legal advancements to the contrary. To ensure the future of law enforcement, barriers and biases must be broken. Women and minorities should be viewed as valuable assets and equals in the department and equal opportunities based on merit should be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Introduction: Causes and Effects Posttraumatic Stress Disorder also known as PTSD is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event, either experiencing it or witnessing it. Although some officers do not seek or receive help and never end up developing PTSD, there are some officers that receive treatment that doesn't come close to helping. After traumatic events occur while on the job, police departments need to implement treatment so that the officers involved can relieve their overwhelming feeling after the event, "if this is not discharged, then people become habitually distanced from their emotions, and do not have the full range of emotional breadth and depth (Rese and Smith 274)". This is where departments fail, by dismissing trauma counseling and overlooking the seriousness the effects some of these calls and events that their officers go through only hurt the department in the long run. If an officer doesn't receive the therapy or debriefing after an event they can lash out, use excessive amount of force in the future while on the job or even at home that can result in an investigation or law suit on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Every occupation has its own work stress. What is unique is all the different stress found in one job. Aside from the heroic services police officers perform in their duty, they experience overwhelming stress in their daily duty.Police stress refers to the negative pressures related to police work (Police Stress, n.d.). Police officers pull drivers over for a number of reasons, ranging from driving recklessly to suspicion of possessing illegal substances. Traffic stops pose stress onto police officers because of its hazards. First, police officers risk the chance of getting hit by incoming traffic. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, over 150 U.S. Law enforcement officers were killed since 1999 by getting struck by vehicles along America's highways (National Safety Commission, 2012). When a police officer pulls over a driver, he or she is focused on documenting information on the incident report, leaving him or her open to the risk of getting hit by incoming vehicles. Second, police officers are caught in a dilemma when making a traffic stop. Chances are that drivers stopped try to injure or even kill the officer. Yet, officers are expected to maintain friendliness at best or neutral at worst. Police officers lower their guard when they approach the driver in a friendly manner. If the officer adopts a continuous friendly approach, they may find themselves attacked by hostile citizens or worst, killed because of losing one's guard. Though, the friendly approach has its risks, the defensive approach has its consequences. When a police officer approaches the driver with a guarded attitude, the officer will most likely forget the goal of cooperating with the driver. Instead Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Essay On Centralized Law Enforcement Over the years, the debate on whether the Department of Law Enforcement in U.S. should be centralized or not continues to be a contentious issue. Both centralized and decentralized forms of administration have their own advantages as well as disadvantages. The U.S. currently has a decentralized police administration structure, which has received equal measure of admiration as well as criticism. As a member of Congress, my staff assistant's proposal to nationalize law enforcement throughout the United States brings with it meaningful insights which need to be analyzed before coming up with an informed conclusion. • 20. Essay on Women in Law Enforcement Women in Law Enforcement There are many stereotypes that women in the law enforcement field have to face. In order to recruit more women into policing, law enforcement agencies should attempt to overcome the idea that policing is a "male–oriented profession". This paper will cover parts of the history of women police officers, some views and stereotypes of the female officer, job related issues, life outside of the workforce and job satisfaction. It used to be that only nursing, teaching, and clerical positions were open to women. For this reason, most women had not really considered policing as a career. "But policewoman's presence was still not wholly welcome, they were there because chiefs succumbed to pressure from outside reform groups, not because male administrators or officers saw any need for them. Policewomen's allies remained other male and female social workers, progressives, clubwomen, and other reformers." (Miller, 1999) Employment opportunities for the female police officer are large. Women will be recruited for many jobs in the field to expand the pool of potential sworn officer. It should be a goal off policing to recruit females so they can be recognized on the streets, making it more of a position that women not in the field of police work an option as a career choice. Allen (1973) States, about women police officers, "any question of the value of their contribution to the solution of police problems has long ago been relegated to the limbo of things proved and taken completely for granted." (p.213) The status of women police officers has grown since the beginning of women in the law enforcement field.
