Speech On Servant Leadership
When I decided I was going to run for Senior Patrol Leader for the first time, I had no idea whether anyone in my troop respected my authority or
my potential to lead the troop for the next 6 months. The former SPL's in the troop were very good in this position and I had a lot of respect for
them because of what they did for the troop. Running against Parker, who had already been SPL, was going to be tough as well because the adults
and scouts in the troop liked him a lot. He had already proven himself to be a good leader and I looked up to him as well. Although he and I may
not have realized it, the role of the SPL was teaching us how to be leaders but more importantly how to serve those that we were leading. As I stepped
to the podium to make my campaign speech, I thought to myself "could I see myself as the next leader of this troop?"
Since that troop election, I've come to learn that leaders aren't born with great leadership qualities like patience, confidence, commitment and a positive
attitude. It is the works of their hands and the experiences in which they partake that build the skills and knowledge they need to lead others. This is
the essence of what I now know as Servant Leadership.
Robert Greenleaf, the founder of the modern servant leadership movement said that "the servant–leader is servant first." "By that he meant that the
desire to serve, the "servant's heart," is a fundamental characteristic of the servant–leader. It is not about being servile, it is about

I had the opportunity to serve on a hiring committee for a large financial firm. The CEO, when he had the opportunity to mingle with his employees,
was personable, and made it a point to know something specific about each employee during these rare encounters. Being a larger firm, the CEO used
newsletters, emails, and various other tele–communications as the only methods to correspond with his employees. He reasoned that some outreach
was better than none, and the employees would instinctively know he cares; to him, this was the formula to a successful business and great

Servant Leadership Journal The concept I found most interesting from the Servant Leadership lecture was when he said that it was possible that we
would not learn anything new in this class. He said that student leadership hasn't changed, there's nothing new and exciting about it. This was

The Servant Leader discusses the importance of leaders who adopt a service oriented attitude in which they care for the needs of others before their
own. A servant leader need not be an actual servant or have ever been a servant to become a servant leader. Rather, a servant leader is born with or
adopts an "others first" disposition. Climbing through the ranks may help to create a servant leader, though it is not necessary. When leaders choose to

The servant leader relies on intuition creativity. One of my favorite quotations appears in this section: "Others will depend on him to go out ahead
and show the way because his judgment will be better than most. Leaders, therefore, must be more creative than most; and creativity is largely
discovery, push into the uncharted and the unknown. Every once in a while a leader finds himself needing to think like a scientist, an artist, or a
poet" (15). Ultimately, I find that Greenleaf would say that a combination of intellect and instinct make the best leaders. This quotation also suggests
that a leader must be versatile rather than an expert in one or two areas. He or she should be able to step into the shoes of others and find new

Speech On Servant Leadership When I decided I was going to run for Senior Patrol Leader for the first time, I had no idea whether anyone in my troop respected my authority or my potential to lead the troop for the next 6 months. The former SPL's in the troop were very good in this position and I had a lot of respect for them because of what they did for the troop. Running against Parker, who had already been SPL, was going to be tough as well because the adults and scouts in the troop liked him a lot. He had already proven himself to be a good leader and I looked up to him as well. Although he and I may not have realized it, the role of the SPL was teaching us how to be leaders but more importantly how to serve those that we were leading.
