INFO AT A GLANCE: THE MOVEMENT WEST
What? The movement West was a mass migration of farmers from the Great Plains who had lost their farms and were searching for better opportunities in the West.
Where? The movement West mainly revolved around Route 66, a two lane highway that stretches from Oklahoma to California.
When? The movement West took place throughout the course of the Dust Bowl (1931-1939).
Why? The combination of both the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression caused many farmers to be without fertile land or means to support themselves. Many were forcibly evicted from their land, so they started travelling West in search of better opportunities.
Who? Family farmers from Middle to Eastern United States mainly participated in the movement West.
Effects: The massive amount of people that migrated caused an overabundance of workers in the West of the U.S., causing a drop in wages and a large number of homeless people with no work that congregated into makeshift establishments on the sides of the road. Western locals were threatened by these people and tension between the two groups mounted.
