2. The Other Revolutions
It’s my goal that you understand how
much much of a break with the past the
French Revolution was. To do so I will
inform you of what the Glorious
Revolution and the Revolutionary War
were about and how their effects on
society differed to the results of the
French Revolution
4. James the ii Of House Stuart
● James the II was a member
of the Stuart Dynasty
● His conversion to
Catholicism had angered
important officials of the
state as England was a
Protestant nation and
deeply despised the
Catholic Church
● The birth of a son had
ignited fear in the
Protestant elite that if he
remained in power the
nation would be
reconverted to Catholicism
5. William and Mary
● To ensure that Jame legacy
would not continue
Parliament invited Mary
James daughter and her
husband William of Oranje
to overthrow James The
Second
● They agreed and launched
an invasion of England
James would flee into exile
and William and Mary
were offered the crown
● This change would reflect
a change of power from
the monarch to Parliament
6. Effects Of The Glorious
Revolution On British Society
● The Glorious Revolution
would lead to the
reduction of monarchical
powers
● In fact, it would be at this
point that England would
transition into a
constitutional monarchy
● It affirmed Parliament's
primacy over the
monarchy being able to
remove the king or queen
should they fall out of
favor with them
● It would also lead to
Catholics being barred
How would you have reacted if
you lived during the Glorious
Revolution and witnessed the
change?
Do you think Parliaments
reasons for supporting the
invasion valid?
How is different from what
happened to France's
monarchy?
9. Causes Of The Revolution
The American Revolution was
not set off by one spark but it
was a conflagration of causes
that caused dissatisfaction with
British Rule
● The people of the Thirteen
Colonies had grown used
to governing themselves
without direct interference
from Britain
● There was popular anger
against the Treaty of Paris
as limited their right to
settle more land
● The vast amount of debt
Britain incurred fighting
the French Indian war lead
to taxes being applied to a
variety of goods in
America to pay off the
debt
● The greatest cause
however, was their lack of
representation in the
British Parliament which
lead to anger when
Parliament drafted laws
which affected them
without consultation
10. Effects Of The American
Revolution
The American Revolution was
Revolutionary and also not at
the same time
● It would lead to a
republican based system of
Government an unheard
of proposition in Europe
● It lowered the bar for
public participation
allowing more people to
vote
● It created a separation of
church and state by
breaking with the Church
Of England
11. Effects Of The American
Revolution Cont
● Women would not obtain
any new rights but would
play a bigger role in the
home as they were seen as
important to in calculating
republican values into
their children
● Local colonial elites
remained in power and
charted the new nation
● It created the belief that no
American was better than
other merely because of
their birth
How would the Revolution have
changed the life you lived if you
alive during the period?
What do you consider to be the
greatest impact of the
Revolution?
How do you feel about the
differences between the
Revolutions rhetoric and it’s
actually effects?
14. Causes Of The French
Revolution
The revolution was brought up
about as it was thanks to
Enlightenment thought and
severe social deprivation here is
a list of them
● France had incurred severe
debt fighting supporting
the American Revolution
● The first two estates as a
result of their privileges
were not required to pay
taxes leaving the peasantry
to maintain the nation
● Crop failure as a result of
poor weather would cause
a severe food shortages
depriving Frances most
needy
● Enlightenment thinkers
like Kant would attack the
pillars French Society was
built on the monarchy and
the church
● The king and his nobility
continued to flaunt their
extravagant lifestyle and
refused to make cuts to
their spending
16. Causes Of The French
Revolution
The severe financial crisis
would force the king to call for a
meeting of the Estates General
to discuss taxes which would
directly lead to the Revolution
● The Estates General was a
three chamber parliament
which greatly angered the
Third Estate
● The First and Second
Estates were filled with
members of the clergy and
aristocrats a far smaller
portion of the population
than the third estate yet
they could them in power
● Being constantly
deadlocked the members
of the Third Estate would
break off and form the
National Assembly
● The National Assembly
would govern
Revolutionary France
before a 5 five person
Oligarchy known as the
Directory took over
17. Effects Of The French
Revolution
While the French Revolution
was the most Revolutionary of
the all the Revolutions
discussed its greatest effects
would happen till later as the
Revolution turned authoritarian
and later reverted into a
Monarchy under Napoleon
Bonaparte
● Frances Estates were
abolished as well as feudal
privileges reserved for the
first two Estates
● The monarchy was
abolished and King Louis
was executed through
● It would lead to the
creation of a secular state
as the revolutionaries
launched anti Catholic
policies
● The Declaration of The
Rights of Man would
delineate the rights both
political and social that
French citizens had a right
to
