60’s Tourism Malaysia started in the 1960s and one of the new forces in the economic sector but
the growth was slow
70’s A tourism master plan was added into the country’s Master Plan 1971-1975 and this marked
the beginning of tourism as the country’s economic contributor
In 10 August 1972, the Tourist Development Corporation (TDC) was established as an agency
under the former Ministry of Trade and Industry
80’s On 20 May 1987, with the inception of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism, TDC was
moved to this new ministry; and became the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB)
through the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Act 1992
90’s In 1992, TDC was replaced by Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) and this originated “
Tourism Malaysia” internationally.

1970s Malaysia hosted the PATA 21st Conference in 1972 which helped propel Malaysia into the
international stage
Transformation of regional airports to into international status resulted in an increase in number
of inbound tourists
1980s Malaysia hosted the PATA 35th Conference in 1986 and this boosted Malaysia’s credibility in
attracting tourists
Greater interest was generated through the highlighting of facilities and services to delegates
1990s Visit Malaysia Year (VMY), a major tourism event was launched in by MOCAT. It was a huge
success. More than 7 million international tourist arrivals were recorded with a growth of 53.6%
More funds were made available to effectively market Malaysia as a destination
MTPB was made responsible of promoting Malaysia and using tourism as a medium to
advance Malaysia’s social-economic wellbeing
4. Visit Malaysia Year 1990

YEAR (VMY) EXPLAINATION
VMY 1990 Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) was first launched in 1990 with the theme “Fascinating
Malaysia. Year of Festivals”
The campaign was a huge success with Malaysia charting 7.4 million in tourist
arrivals compared to 4.8 million in 1989.
To enable tourists to easily recognize Malaysia, the “Orang Utan, the
endangered species found in East Malaysia was used as a mascot and it was
named “Wira”.
Apart from it, Kuala Lumpur’s famous landmark, Sultan Abdul Samad building
was featured as the official Visit Malaysia Year 1990 logo
Malaysia Independence Day in August 31 was the anchor for 84 major
events, 14 festivals and nine exhibitions during VMY 1990.

VMY 1990 Organised by Tourism Development Centre (TDC)
Concept : ethnic celebration, culture, arts, performance, exhibition and sport
Objectives:
1. To increase 10% of tourist arrivals for each year since 1990
2. To encourage tourist to stay longer and spend more money in Malaysia
3. To encourage domestic tourism
Impacts:
1. 7.4 million tourist arrivals
2. Tourist receipt increase from RM2800m to 4800m

VMY 1990 The impact of VMY 1990 not only reflected the development of infrastructure
but also could be seen in the development of tourism industry through:-
1. The increasing number of tourist arrival from 5 million to 7 million in 1993.
2. Main arrivals from Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, United
Kingdom, United State of America, Australia, India, Korean and China.
3. Tourist receipt increase around 16% a year with total income of 5.06 million
in 1993.
4. Percentage of ‘Long-haul’ tourist in Malaysia increased to 40%.
5. Occupancy rate was increased to70% - 80% in 1993.
7. Visit Malaysia Year 1994

VMY 1994 Three years after the successful story of VMY 1990, the government of
Malaysia through Ministry of Culture Art and Tourism decided to held the
second VMY which is the VMY 1994. The purpose of VMY 1994 was:-
1. To increase tourist arrival around 10% a year.
2. To increase domestic tourism especially in historical, culture and nature
tourism.
3. Income opportunities for the local.
4. To increase foreign exchange.
The success of VMY 1990 has spurred another VMY in 1994.
This time around, the theme was “Fascinating Malaysia. Naturally More”.
VMY 1994 maintained its words “Fascinating Malaysia” for the theme but
injected a punch line “Naturally More” to reflect more exciting things and
events lined up for that year.
“Orang Utan” was once again used as the mascot.

VMY 1994 IMPACT :
1. Visit Malaysia Year 1994, was successfully increased 14% of tourist arrival
(9.16 million).
2. The development of hotel industries and accommodation.
3. Increased in service sector and transportation.
4. More recreation park, culture and entertainment being introduced.
4. The development of any types of national industrial.
5. ‘Quality tourism’ has been introduced to encourage tourist to stay longer.
6. Development of new tourism product being introduce such as ‘mountain
tourism’, ‘island tourism’, ‘culture tourism’ and ‘agro tourism’.
7. ‘Naturally More in 1994’ was the activity which incude culture, handicraft,
national celebration and sport.

2007
The third VMY was launched in 2007 in conjunction with Malaysia’s 50th
Independence Anniversary.
Hence, the theme “Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood” was most befitting
to reflect this important anniversary celebration.
Efforts were also intensified in all advertising and promotional activities,
including the call for action “The time is now. The place is Malaysia” together
with its successful and impactful slogan “Malaysia Truly Asia.
The official launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign was officiated by
YAB. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the Deputy Prime Minister of
Malaysia, in Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur, at midnight on 2006 new year's
eve
In line with the 50th Independence Anniversary, over 200 events across the
country with 50 major events were held to showcase Malaysia’s wealth of
tourism attractions.
10. Visit Malaysia Year 2007

2007
The Visit Malaysia Year 2007 aims to promote Malaysia as a major
international tourist destination.
With various events held throughout the year, tourists are encouraged to stay
longer, thus increasing their expenditures as well.
It will also stimulate the growth of domestic tourism in Malaysia.
Many programs and activities are planned such as the eye on Malaysia,
World Rainforest Musical Festivals and ongoing Mega Sales Carnival
throughout the year.
Impacts: All in all, VMY 2007 charted a tremendous success beyond
expectations with 20.97 million in tourist arrivals and RM46.1 billion in tourist
receipts. This means a rise of 3.42 million and RM9.8 billion from the previous
year.
11. Visit Malaysia Year 2014

2014
In 2014, Malaysia will celebrate its fourth Visit Malaysia Year with the theme
“Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia” to reflect the diversity in unity of all Malaysians.
The Proboscis Monkey has been chosen as the mascot while the promotional
campaign has started in 2013 with a series of year-long special events and activities
leading to VMY 2014.
This time around, VMY 2014 will be the biggest and grandest ever tourism celebration
with hundreds of events and festivals all lined up to welcome the world.
Overall, it is hoped that VMY 2014 will contribute to the Government’s target to
receive 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in receipts by 2020, as outlined in
the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan (MTTP) 2020.
