The Survival Of
Indian Weavers
2. THE DESTINY
Starting from some big current news which are affecting Indian weavers and
despite all the policies. the outcome is still not up to the mark. There has to be
a loophole somewhere in the middle.
Previously, weavers were involved in the whole process starting from raw
materials to design executed by different internal units. Now, there include
some external factors too. Designers are hired to supervise the master weavers
to experiment with the designs as per new demands. Some experiments go
well and others are all in vain.
The business profits are dwelling only to one side which needs to be balanced.
Also, the basics of art have to be maintained so that it is at least recognizable.
Moulding the art as per the current trends won't let it run on a long journey.

3. THE UNUSUAL RAINFALL IN KERELA LED TO DAMAGES THAT CAN'T BE FIXED.
WEAVERS COMMUNITY THERE ALSO FACED A HUGE SETBACK WHEN THE WHOLE
MANUFACTURING UNITS DESTROYED. NOW, THAT THE STATE IS TRYING TO GET
BACK TO LIFE, WEAVERS ARE FINDING IT HARD TO START FROM THE SCRATCH.
RECENTLY, SOME SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS HAD THIS IDEA OF SELLING THE DOLLS
ONLINE MADE UP OF DESTROYED SAREES DURING FLOODS. WE CAN ACTUALLY
SEE A POSITIVE DEMAND OF THESE CHEKUTTY DOLLS DUE TO WHICH WEAVERS
CAN START THEIR SURVIVAL AGAIN.

4. IT IS INDEED AN APPRECIATING STEP FROM THE SIDE OF GOVERNMENT THAT
THINGS ARE STARTING TO BE ORGANIZED. SELL AND PURCHASE OF THE YARN WILL
BE CERTAIN. OPPOSITE OF WHAT USED TO HAPPEN IN THE PAST. SILK YARN IN
ASSAM COME FROM CHINA THROUGH BENGALURU AND PRICES ARE OFTEN
DIFFERENT LINKING TO THE INTERNAL PROCESS. THIS MAY TAKE A SETBACK AND
WEAVERS DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE ANY PAIN FOR THAT.
ONE THING THE CLUSTERS ARE AFRAID OF IS THE QUALITY OF THE YARN. IF IT
WOULD NOT BE UP TO THE MARK, WEAVERS MAY REFUSE TO WORK WITH IT.
ALONG WITH THIS BANK, EVERY WEAVER WITH 1 TO 5 LOOM WILL BE GIVEN
PASSBOOK LIKE USUAL BANK PROCESS.
ALONG WITH THE BANK, SOME TRAINERS WILL BE APPOINTED AS WELL TO TRAIN
THE MASTER WITH NEW DESIGNS TO EXPERIMENT WITH. THIS SEEMS A GREAT
INITIATIVE AND IF TAKEN OUT WELL, CAN LEAD TO A LUCRATIVE BUSINESS BOTH
FOR GOVERNMENT AND WEAVERS.

5. ASSAM MUGA SILK WASTE IS NOW REELED AND SENT TO HIGH-FASHION
DESIGNERS IN THE INDUSTRY. THE PROCESS OF EXTRACTING THREAD FROM THE
COCOON LEFT THE LAST THREAD AS IT IS VERY DELICATE AND IT TEARS APART.
NOW, A MACHINERY IS BEEN USED TO EXTRACT THE WASTE AND MAKE IT USEFUL.
GOOD PRACTICES ARE FINALLY NOW STARTED AND WE ARE GOING TO MAKE THIS
INDUSTRY MORE ORGANIZED. UP TO 40K WASTE CAN BE PRODUCED ANNUALLY
OUT OF WHICH 25% CAN BE MADE PRODUCTIVE. OTHER 75% IS USED AS FEED TO
POULTRY AND FISH.

6. THE BITTER SURVIVAL
There are many stories like Bodice winning
the 'Woolmark" Prize, Odisha's Kotpad
weavers going global and Khadi's re-inventing
the traditional wearables. And, despite the
global effect for handlooms, it is also taking
the front row in its own market.
Many of us in the market says its revival of
traditional wear and specially saree. And,
when we go through the figures, it only
contains the statistics of few states. Like if go
to rural India, Women still wear saree
regularly. It's a revival only for some or we can
say we are more likely to connect 'cool' with
tradition. It won't be called as boring anytime.
This is the reason brands are more inclined
towards the product of range they provide.
From bottom-line to exclusive and different
designs, patterns, textiles, handlooms are
going to capture every kind of consumer.

7. FASHION IN INDIA
MAINLY OF THREE KINDS
There exists different kinds of fashion in India and all of them are not
influenced by any. First is the Bollywood inspiration and particularly the street
style. Second, it is the fashion for the royal class which is completely different.
And, the third is rural Indian fashion which again is in a different zone. All
three have a different range in terms of preferences. These preferences are
specifically of the textile material because all of the above three have a
different lifestyle.
We can actually see there is so much to explore in it and handlooms can easily
capture the market as everybody can relate to it and it can perfectly adore the
Indian figures.
This much space to explore and still handloom weaves have to survive for
their living which is clearly disappointing. One thing that is satisfying is the
whole weaving community is trying to be organized. It will take time for
people to think, accept and trust the business but with their intellect
growing in a right direction and a zeal to upgrade will surely crave a path of
positivity for both.
