 The Kancheepuram silk industry, with its
500-year-old tradition, is known for
producing heavyweight stiff silk saris.
 Kancheepuram rose to eminence during
Krishna-Deva Raya's reign, when two
weaving communities - the Devangas and
the Saligars transmigrated to
Kancheepuram from Andhra Pradesh.
 . The Devanga and Saligar weavers were
reputed for their weaving silks.

7. Weaving techniques
 The process begins with the silk thread being
twisted, then dyed and dried in the sun after
which it is ready for the weaver's loom.
 The Kanchipuram silk sari is hand-woven with
dyed silk yarn with interleaved designs made
with 'Zari' .
 - a silk thread twisted with thin silver wire and
then gilded with pure gold.
 Technically, the silk thread used for weaving
Kanchipuram saris is made up of three single
threads twisted together called three ply.

 A weaver takes about
10-12 days to weave a

20 days.

time consuming method of interlocking its weft colours as
well as its end piece and in the process creating solid
borders and a solid "Mundhi".

 Interlocked Zari borders are common down both sides of
the sari and the garment is finished with matching gold
Zari Pallu.

woven in gold-dipped silver threads.

tribal designs.
