Quality Management and Planning
The module will enable the student to understand: how quality principles can improve business performance;
the use of the ‘Plan, Do Check, Act (PDCA) cycle with management systems; process design and improvement;
the quality management function within an organization and how to assess and report on quality costs.
The module covers key concepts of quality management, including the principles of quality, the PDCA cycle,
process design, quality management function and quality related costs, new product development process and
product lifecycle management.
Management Systems and Legislation
The module will enable the student to gain a broad view of: the purpose of 1

party auditing; the
role of audit and its importance in an organizations management system; the content of standards for auditing
practice; legislation and liability relevant to quality; how conformity assessment and quality management can
reduce liability.
The module covers a foundation in: the auditing process; methods and techniques for auditing; auditing
related standards; legal principles; statuary requirements; product conformity testing and management of
legal risks.
Using Quality to Improve Business Performance
The module will enable the student to gain a basic understanding of: continual improvement and its
application to business; the process for identifying and prioritizing areas for improvement; how to manage an
improvement project.
The module covers a foundation in: the principles and benefits of prioritizing projects for quality improvement;
the improvement process; managing improvement projects; lean process improvement concepts; managing
business improvement.
2. People and Systems in Quality
The module will enable the student to gain a basic understanding of: organizational values and culture to the
achievement of quality performance; behavioural approaches for getting results through people; the
importance of communication for managing quality; the use of quality models in business; the use of
integrated management systems within organizations.
The module covers a foundation in: principles of leadership and motivation, group dynamics; influence of the
quality gurus on work organization; organizational support for team activities; communication; management
system models and standards; standards; integrated management systems; assessment of conformance with
models and standards.
Monitoring and Measuring for Quality
The module will enable the student to gain a basic understanding of the role of monitoring and measuring in
making decisions related to quality and the use of methods for data collection and analysis.
The module covers a foundation in: fundamental principles of monitoring and measuring for quality; criteria
for section; types of data collection; tools for data collection; monitoring and measuring quality.
A Quality Project
The module will enable the student to gain a basic understanding of the process for acquiring new information
using research.
The module covers a foundation in: research methods; terms of reference for a research project; developing
and testing theories; application of data collection to business research; use of libraries, the internet,
interviews, questionnaires and other sources of information; case studies of research projects; drawing
conclusions, comparing results with the aims and presenting the results; presentation of inconclusive results
and organization of references to the work of others; dealing with copyright material, risks to research
findings; referencing methods
