information. If you backup
daily, you may have lost a
day’s worth of
information. Both of these
options result in time and
money spent on
reconstructing data.
If your backup system
backs up every thirty
minutes, the industry
standard I recommend,
you’re in good shape. If
you don’t have a recent
backup, then you’re SOL
(Sadly Out of Luck…. What
were you thinking it
meant?)
In this particular case, I
didn’t recommend paying
the ransom, since we
were able to clean the
infected computers and
restore the files from our

“I can’t open my files and I
can’t run payroll today… and
it’s asking me to pay a
ransom!” -A client in Texas
with the CryptoWall virus.
Well, what do we do now?
After looking at the ransom
note, I did a quick search
and realized my client was
dealing with the CryptoWall
virus. Not fun.
CryptoWall is very much like
its predecessor,
CryptoLocker. It is a
ransomware virus, putting
the victim in a difficult
position of paying a ransom
to retrieve their files or lose
them forever.
CryptoWall is distributed by
e-mails with attachments
disguised as PDF files. It’s
really a ZIP file with a
payload of program files. It
scans your computer and
the network and encrypts
data on anything in My
Computer with a drive letter.
In other words, it locks your
data and makes it unusable
except when a certain
decryption key is entered.
You have to pay a ransom to
get the key.
Sorry, that’s not going to
happen on my watch… not
as long as your backup and
data recovery system is one of
our recommended solutions.
Once infected, the computer
should be scanned with an
antivirus scan or other utility
designed to clean the virus from
the infected computer. We
usually have to use a utility
because the CryptoWall has
mutated and managed to get
past the antivirus. By the time
it’s discovered, it’s already done
its damage.
Once CryptoWall is cleaned from
the infected computer and
various files containing the
ransom notices have been
deleted, you’re still left with files
that cannot be decrypted. The
only sure method you have of
ever getting your data back in
whole is with a good backup.
If you back up weekly, you may
have lost a week’s worth of

News And Commentary:
The Mid-Term Elections
November 4, 2014: It was a
miserable night to be a Democrat.
The pollsters and the news outlets
said the Senate was too close to
call. Really?
The 2014 mid-term elections
weren’t even close… not even the
so called close races. The liberal
policies of the Democrat Party and
the president have been rejected.
As a result, there are Republican
majorities in the U.S. House and
Senate.
Close to home, Texas has a new
Republican Governor in Greg
Abbott. His Democrat challenger,
Wendy Davis, was a pro-abortion
candidate who did not resonate
with the people in Texas. She was
easy on the eyes, but that’s all she
had going for her. Her moral fiber
was, shall we say, lacking.
Arkansas was an interesting study
in the power of Bill and Hillary
Clinton. They campaigned with
Democrats running for the House,

CryptoWall Virus Message
In the Christmas season, we should all
spend time counting our blessings… at
home and in business. I have a lot to be
thankful for.
We cherish our children and our
grandchildren. It has always been a
blessing to be a part of my children’s,
and now my grandchildren’s, lives. We
had a great Thanksgiving with family
and we’re looking forward to Christmas.
I owe a debt of gratitude to God, my
parents, my wife, my children, my
grandchildren, and my family. I’ve also
had a few friends and mentors along the
way who took an interest in me.
Let’s not forget, too, the people we do
business with. I’m talking about you, my
valued clients, particularly those who
have trusted my advice for many years
and implemented software and systems
to effective operate your businesses. I
take great pride in my client base. You
are the best people around to work with.
As we give thanks in the Christmas
season, we begin to look ahead to next
year. Do you currently have a system in
place that tells you exactly where you
are at any given time or do you struggle
with knowing your profitability, costs,
costs per unit, who owes you, and your
projected cash flow?
Does your computer network run
smoothly, or are you plagued with speed
problems, viruses, and downtime?
Is your backup system capable of
keeping your business running in the
event of a disaster? Or, are you not sure
if you could recover your data and keep
operating if you had a hacker or virus
attack, hurricane, flood, fire, or tornado?
After the disaster happens is a bad time
to start figuring these things out.
Aside from all this talk of business, I
would simply like to wish you a Blessed
Christmas and a Happy New Year. It’s
not about Black Friday and shopping.
It’s about family.
Sometimes I feel like George Bailey of
the movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” I feel
overwhelmed, overcommitted, and
overworked. Then, I think about George
(Continued on page 4)
system in a couple of
hours.
Looking forward, there are
some things you can do to
prevent CryptoWall and
other forms of ransom-
ware. There is a Crypro-
Guard tool available to all
our clients to monitor your
browser for unusual
behavior and stop
CryptoWall in its tracks.
In addition, there are three
things you can do to
(Continued from page 1) prevent CryptoWall and
other viruses:
1. Learn to recognize
suspicious e-mail activity.
Is the sender legit? Is the
attachment legit?
2. Stay informed by
following our security
updates on Twitter
@vichemard and at
www.hemard.com.
3. Make sure your antivirus
is current, your web
protection software is in
force, and your firewall is
up and running.
Finally, if CryptoWall does
find its way into your
system, your safety net is
your backup and disaster
recovery system. There is
no substitute for
maintaining business
continuity and minimizing
downtime when disaster
strikes.
Don’t let these cyber-
criminals lock up your files
and take your money. Be
smart, protect yourself,
and have a good business
continuity system.

Time Well Wasted: Our Sweet Clara
October 6th came and,
well... still no baby. That
was Stephanie’s due date.
For the uninitiated, my son
Brandon and wife
Stephanie were expecting
their first child on October
6th.
They knew, from
ultrasound technology,
she was a girl and was
developing normally. One
unique thing about their
journey was they had
chosen a name, but
decided to keep it a secret
until she was born.
We supported their
decision wholeheartedly.
As a result of the secrecy,
however, we referred to
her as “Secret” until she
was born on October 18th,
12 days after her due
date .
Brandon and Stephanie
were well organized and
prepared, particularly
since they had the extra
12 days to mentally work
through the whole
process.
So, the 18th being a
Saturday, I was at home
but Nancy was running
errands. She called to ask
me about some special
batteries for a flashlight
and I had to break the
news to her. “Brandon
called me a few minutes
ago. They’re at the
hospital.”
Of course, she then said,
“I’m coming home!”
At 7:32 PM on October 18,
a healthy Clara Grace
Hemard was born, 7 lb 2
oz, 20 1/4 inches. Well,
Stephanie did great with
natural childbirth and
Brandon was there for the
coaching and support, to
cut the cord, and all the
rituals new parents do to
bond with their newborns.
We’re very proud of both
of them and how well they
were prepared to navigate
through childbirth as new
parents.
Respecting their plan to
spend time with Clara right
after the birth, we were
waiting for the high sign as
to when we should appear
on the scene. I bet the
Bernhards, Stephanie’s
parents, felt the same
way.
We arrived at Presbyterian
Hospital of Dallas with an
early lunch the next day
and celebrated Clara’s
arrival. Such a sweet baby!
The Bernhards arrived
later that day from
Boerne, Texas and we had
a nice reunion at the
hospital in addition to
spending time with Clara.
We have since re-visited
Brandon, Stephanie, and

I just added swaddling to my
skill set as a baby whisperer.
Sometimes nothing works
and you just have to nurture
her as best you can.
There’s nothing wrong with
holding your baby and
comforting her when she is
fussy. As parents, we lost a
lot of sleep trying to comfort
our infants. I have no regrets.
I always felt it would make
them feel more secure. A

Clara in Dallas to help out in
any small way we could.
They were here for
Thanksgiving, too, giving us
quantity and quality time
with Clara. Babies sure grow
quickly!
No matter how you prepare,
you can’t anticipate all the
small challenges you will
encounter after you take
your baby home. Every child
different.
Swaddling. We never really
swaddled our children when
they were infants. I was
introduced to it when Juliet
was born in June and
learned how it was done.
Brandon and Stephanie
showed us a video on
swaddling that seemed to
make a lot of sense and why
it helps calm infants. It
definitely helped with Clara.
The concept, of course, is to
duplicate what it was like to
be in the womb, calming the
baby when she is fussy.

Baptism at Saint Justin Martyr Catholic Church
More Time Well Wasted: Juliet’s Baptism
Both the Hemard and
Horansky families were there
in force for Juliet’s baptism at
Saint Justin Martyr Catholic
Church in Houston.
Juliet was about two months
old, around the age when most
children in Catholic families
are baptized. It’s an occasion
for families to celebrate.
Juliet, of course, is my
granddaughter and her
parents are my daughter
Kristin and son-in-law Drew.
We had 22 family members
plus the pastor, Father Paul
Chovanec, for the baptism.
After, we met at the Lasagna
House restaurant for a great
Italian meal and time with
family. We later gathered at
Kristin’s house for more family
time and watched the LSU—
Wisconsin football game.
This was not only an important
day in Juliet’s life as a Catholic
and Christian, but a good
opportunity for us to get
together as a family.
and how he had to jump off
a bridge to finally realize
his life had meaning and
his family and the
relationships he formed
over the years were the
(Continued from page 2) most important things in
life.
So, when things really start
to look bad I stop and take
stock. I stop and say to
myself, “Yes, George
Bailey... Just like you, I am
the richest man in town!”
I know we’re all busy. But,
you know, come hell or
high water, I’m going to
enjoy the holidays and I
hope you do, too!
Merry Christmas!

Senate, and Governor. It was a close
race until they rolled into town. As a
result, every U.S. House seat, Senate
seat, and the Governor is a conservative
Republican. The state legislature is also
largely Republican in a state that was
strongly Democrat a few years ago.
If I’m a conservative candidate, I want
the Clintons to come to Arkansas to
campaign for the Democrats. Bring the
Obamas, too. Just having morally corrupt
politicians on the opposite side who
consider themselves elites who know
what is good for us more than we do is
all the information voters need not to
vote for their candidates.
The strategy of meeting elites head-on,
cutting taxes, and producing jobs
worked for Scott Walker in Wisconsin. As
governor of Wisconsin, he was elected
governor three times in four years by
going against the Clintons, the Obamas,
and the unions. Against all odds, you
might say. But, maybe they’re not as
popular as the mainstream media says
they are.
Obamacare is even less popular. Of the
Senate Democrats who voted for
Obamacare, 30 are no longer in office.
The last of the 30 was Mary Landrieu,
who bit the dust December 6. The
message sent in November was to
repeal Obamacare. Some say it was
repeal and replace Obamacare. I say just
defund, repeal, and don’t try to replace it
with another government program.
I trust letting the doctors be doctors and
letting the drug companies and the
insurance companies compete in the
free market more than I trust big
government. The best medical system in
the world is being ruined by socialists
and faculty lounge lizards in the
administration who haven’t the slightest
notion of how the free market works. Nor
do they trust it. They’ve never started a
business or had to make a payroll or
(Continued from page 1)

By the end of December,
you can expect to receive
an update for the Forest
Products Accounting (FPA)
system. One of the main
benefits of this update will
be an improved and even
more user-friendly
Accounts Receivable (AR)
module.
In the past, the AR was
somewhat unforgiving if
you selected the wrong
ticket and posted it. There
wasn’t an opportunity to
work with the complete
payment before posting to
the AR and the general
ledger.
In the new AR, you have
much more control over
how you apply payments to
invoices (tickets).
Basically, you can check or
uncheck the tickets you
wish to apply payment to
and then post them as
paid after you have the
proper tickets selected.
This is one of many
benefits you can expect in
the year-end 2014 update
as FPA continues its
ongoing mission of
innovation and process
improvement.
Sometimes we can learn a
lesson from our grand-
children, even if they’re
just five months old.
We just returned from a
visit to my daughter and
son-in-law and, of course,
my granddaughter Juliet.
We had a chance to hold
her and talk to her, take
her to church, and just
hang out, as they say.
She is at the age where
she has started to smile
and engage with us and
we enjoy talking and
singing to her as well as
even those quiet times
when she is getting tired.
One thing is for sure: it’s
difficult to multi-task
around a five-month old.
I don’t even try!
I didn’t spend much time
on the phone or do many
other things during our
recent visit with Juliet. If I
had, I would have missed a
lot.
I would have missed her
smile and her eyes telling
me to talk to her and make
her smile. Or, when she
was a little fussy, to
nurture her and help her
feel secure. Or, just during
the time we walked to
church or sat on a the
front porch on a sunny day,
I watched how she
absorbed everything
around her, taking in every
detail, every slight gust of
wind, every color around
her… everything… not
missing anything.
There is the lesson in this,
of course: Live within the
moment. Be present.
Engage with other persons.
Be where you are, not off
in the land of constant
distractions with e-mail,
smart phones, and small
talk on social media.
This means staying away
from smart phones at the
dinner table. Have a
conversation. Look
someone else in the eye
and listen. Get off of
facebook when engaging
with your family. Get
outside and experience all
the newness nature has to
offer. I repeat, be present!
You might then actually
have a real life to talk
about!
Books I’ve Read Recently
Valedictorians provide us with a life lesson.
I’ve known quite a few high school
valedictorians. Most of them graduated
from the high school in our school district,
Pleasant Grove High School, from 1999 to
2005. In our school district, there can only
be one. There are no ties. I know one
especially well, my daughter Laura, who
was valedictorian of the class of 2003.
As a friend of mine and Laura’s godfather,
Billy Smith, once said, “Not everyone has
the ability to be number one in their class.”
Billy was right, there has to be a gift of a
certain level of intelligence. I don’t deny
that. It’s a given. Sometimes a valedictorian
has the highest IQ. Sometimes not. From
my experience, valedictorians have a lot
more going for them.
First and foremost, valedictorians are very
consistent. While they may not make the
very highest grade in every class, they are
consistently at or near the top of an
individual class. They may struggle with
certain subjects, but seem to be able to
bear down and press harder when the
going gets tough. They are relentless and
not easily discouraged.
All of the high school valedictorians I
know have a high level of motivation... not
to be valedictorian, but motivation to
succeed. Being number one in their class
is not on their mind, at least through the
11th grade. They simply give it their best
shot and let the chips fall as they may.
The unique thing about Laura’s
experience was she was ranked No.1 in
her class after her junior year and
purposely avoided telling anyone. She
did not want to put any undue pressure
on herself. The unofficial class rankings
during a student’s career in high school
are only made available to the parents
upon request, so it wasn’t public
knowledge.
I watched Laura move up from 10th to
4th to 1st in 2 years. She just pressed on
and consistently kept taking the hard
courses and doing the assignments. Just
giving it her best shot… with no regrets
and no excuses.
Now that’s a life lesson!
Page 5
American Sniper by Chris Kyle
American Sniper, Memorial Edition, is the
second book I’ve read by Chris Kyle. The
first was American Gun. I recommend both
books.
American Sniper is particularly timely since
there will be a movie based on the book
coming to theaters on January 16th. I
suspect the movie will be something to
see.
Chris Kyle was a Navy SEAL and American
war hero who, from 1999 to 2009,
recorded the most career sniper kills in
United States military history. Kyle was
tragically killed as a civilian in February
2013 at age 38 by a fellow veteran
suffering from post traumatic stress
disorder.
What really prompted me to buy and read
this book was the news that former
wrestler, Navy SEAL, and governor of
Minnesota Jesse Ventura won a lawsuit
and was granted a $1.84 million award
against Kyle’s wife Taya, his children, and
his estate.
Ventura claimed his character was
defamed in this book, even though he was
not even mentioned by name. Hey Jesse, if
you don’t want your character defamed,
how about not suing the wife and children
of an American hero and taking $1.84
million in the process!
In any case, the memorial edition of this
book is an autobiography of Chris Kyle as
boy growing up in Texas, as a Navy SEAL,
and as a husband and father. It also has
additional photos and memorial tributes
from family and friends.
The book is written in plain English. It’s just
like you were sitting right across from Chris
Kyle, having a conversation. I think you’ll
enjoy the book and Kyle’s personal insights
as a SEAL and as a family man.
If your company running Microsoft

about a dangerous security threat to

In short, all machines running Windows

Microsoft has officially announced it will

Once support ends for this product, all

These attacks are aimed at taking

crashing your system, and inflicting
other business-crippling problems.

If your backup system backs up every thirty minutes, the industry standard I recommend, you’re in good shape. If you don’t have a recent backup, then you’re SOL (Sadly Out of Luck…. What were you thinking it meant?) In this particular case, I didn’t recommend paying the ransom, since we were able to clean the infected computers and restore the files from our recommended backup (Continued on page 2) “I can’t open my files and I can’t run payroll today… and it’s asking me to pay a ransom!” -A client in Texas with the CryptoWall virus. Well, what do we do now? After looking at the ransom note, I did a quick search and realized my client was dealing with the CryptoWall virus. Not fun. CryptoWall is very much like its predecessor, CryptoLocker. It is a ransomware virus, putting the victim in a difficult position of paying a ransom to retrieve their files or lose them forever. CryptoWall is distributed by e-mails with attachments disguised as PDF files. It’s really a ZIP file with a payload of program files. It scans your computer and the network and encrypts data on anything in My Computer with a drive letter. In other words, it locks your data and makes it unusable except when a certain decryption key is entered. You have to pay a ransom to get the key. Sorry, that’s not going to happen on my watch… not as long as your backup and data recovery system is one of our recommended solutions. Once infected, the computer should be scanned with an antivirus scan or other utility designed to clean the virus from the infected computer. We usually have to use a utility because the CryptoWall has mutated and managed to get past the antivirus. By the time it’s discovered, it’s already done its damage. Once CryptoWall is cleaned from the infected computer and various files containing the ransom notices have been deleted, you’re still left with files that cannot be decrypted. The only sure method you have of ever getting your data back in whole is with a good backup. If you back up weekly, you may have lost a week’s worth of Hemard & Company December 2014 Client Connection Inside this issue: CryptoWall 1 News and Commentary 1 I’m Grateful 2 Time Well Wasted 2 FPA’s New AR Interface 4 A Lesson From Juliet 4 Books I’ve Read Recently 5 From the desk of Victor E Hemard Jr, President News And Commentary: The Mid-Term Elections November 4, 2014: It was a miserable night to be a Democrat. The pollsters and the news outlets said the Senate was too close to call. Really? The 2014 mid-term elections weren’t even close… not even the so called close races. The liberal policies of the Democrat Party and the president have been rejected. As a result, there are Republican majorities in the U.S. House and Senate. Close to home, Texas has a new Republican Governor in Greg Abbott. His Democrat challenger, Wendy Davis, was a pro-abortion candidate who did not resonate with the people in Texas. She was easy on the eyes, but that’s all she had going for her. Her moral fiber was, shall we say, lacking. Arkansas was an interesting study in the power of Bill and Hillary Clinton. They campaigned with Democrats running for the House, (Continued on page 4) CryptoWall Virus Message
  • 2. In the Christmas season, we should all spend time counting our blessings… at home and in business. I have a lot to be thankful for. We cherish our children and our grandchildren. It has always been a blessing to be a part of my children’s, and now my grandchildren’s, lives. We had a great Thanksgiving with family and we’re looking forward to Christmas. I owe a debt of gratitude to God, my parents, my wife, my children, my grandchildren, and my family. I’ve also had a few friends and mentors along the way who took an interest in me. Let’s not forget, too, the people we do business with. I’m talking about you, my valued clients, particularly those who have trusted my advice for many years and implemented software and systems to effective operate your businesses. I take great pride in my client base. You are the best people around to work with. As we give thanks in the Christmas season, we begin to look ahead to next year. Do you currently have a system in place that tells you exactly where you are at any given time or do you struggle with knowing your profitability, costs, costs per unit, who owes you, and your projected cash flow? Does your computer network run smoothly, or are you plagued with speed problems, viruses, and downtime? Is your backup system capable of keeping your business running in the event of a disaster? Or, are you not sure if you could recover your data and keep operating if you had a hacker or virus attack, hurricane, flood, fire, or tornado? After the disaster happens is a bad time to start figuring these things out. Aside from all this talk of business, I would simply like to wish you a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. It’s not about Black Friday and shopping. It’s about family. Sometimes I feel like George Bailey of the movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” I feel overwhelmed, overcommitted, and overworked. Then, I think about George (Continued on page 4) system in a couple of hours. Looking forward, there are some things you can do to prevent CryptoWall and other forms of ransom- ware. There is a Crypro- Guard tool available to all our clients to monitor your browser for unusual behavior and stop CryptoWall in its tracks. In addition, there are three things you can do to (Continued from page 1) prevent CryptoWall and other viruses: 1. Learn to recognize suspicious e-mail activity. Is the sender legit? Is the attachment legit? 2. Stay informed by following our security updates on Twitter @vichemard and at www.hemard.com. 3. Make sure your antivirus is current, your web protection software is in force, and your firewall is up and running. Finally, if CryptoWall does find its way into your system, your safety net is your backup and disaster recovery system. There is no substitute for maintaining business continuity and minimizing downtime when disaster strikes. Don’t let these cyber- criminals lock up your files and take your money. Be smart, protect yourself, and have a good business continuity system. Page 2 Client Connection I’m Grateful Time Well Wasted: Our Sweet Clara October 6th came and, well... still no baby. That was Stephanie’s due date. For the uninitiated, my son Brandon and wife Stephanie were expecting their first child on October 6th. They knew, from ultrasound technology, she was a girl and was developing normally. One unique thing about their journey was they had chosen a name, but decided to keep it a secret until she was born. We supported their decision wholeheartedly. As a result of the secrecy, however, we referred to her as “Secret” until she was born on October 18th, 12 days after her due date . Brandon and Stephanie were well organized and prepared, particularly since they had the extra 12 days to mentally work through the whole process. So, the 18th being a Saturday, I was at home but Nancy was running errands. She called to ask me about some special batteries for a flashlight and I had to break the news to her. “Brandon called me a few minutes ago. They’re at the hospital.” Of course, she then said, “I’m coming home!” At 7:32 PM on October 18, a healthy Clara Grace Hemard was born, 7 lb 2 oz, 20 1/4 inches. Well, Stephanie did great with natural childbirth and Brandon was there for the coaching and support, to cut the cord, and all the rituals new parents do to bond with their newborns. We’re very proud of both of them and how well they were prepared to navigate through childbirth as new parents. Respecting their plan to spend time with Clara right after the birth, we were waiting for the high sign as to when we should appear on the scene. I bet the Bernhards, Stephanie’s parents, felt the same way. We arrived at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas with an early lunch the next day and celebrated Clara’s arrival. Such a sweet baby! The Bernhards arrived later that day from Boerne, Texas and we had a nice reunion at the hospital in addition to spending time with Clara. We have since re-visited Brandon, Stephanie, and (Continued on page 3)
  • 3. Time Well Wasted: Our Sweet Clara (continued) I just added swaddling to my skill set as a baby whisperer. Sometimes nothing works and you just have to nurture her as best you can. There’s nothing wrong with holding your baby and comforting her when she is fussy. As parents, we lost a lot of sleep trying to comfort our infants. I have no regrets. I always felt it would make them feel more secure. A (Continued on page 5) Clara in Dallas to help out in any small way we could. They were here for Thanksgiving, too, giving us quantity and quality time with Clara. Babies sure grow quickly! No matter how you prepare, you can’t anticipate all the small challenges you will encounter after you take your baby home. Every child different. Swaddling. We never really swaddled our children when they were infants. I was introduced to it when Juliet was born in June and learned how it was done. Brandon and Stephanie showed us a video on swaddling that seemed to make a lot of sense and why it helps calm infants. It definitely helped with Clara. The concept, of course, is to duplicate what it was like to be in the womb, calming the baby when she is fussy. (Continued from page 2) Page 3 December 2014 Baptism at Saint Justin Martyr Catholic Church More Time Well Wasted: Juliet’s Baptism Both the Hemard and Horansky families were there in force for Juliet’s baptism at Saint Justin Martyr Catholic Church in Houston. Juliet was about two months old, around the age when most children in Catholic families are baptized. It’s an occasion for families to celebrate. Juliet, of course, is my granddaughter and her parents are my daughter Kristin and son-in-law Drew. We had 22 family members plus the pastor, Father Paul Chovanec, for the baptism. After, we met at the Lasagna House restaurant for a great Italian meal and time with family. We later gathered at Kristin’s house for more family time and watched the LSU— Wisconsin football game. This was not only an important day in Juliet’s life as a Catholic and Christian, but a good opportunity for us to get together as a family.

So, when things really start to look bad I stop and take stock. I stop and say to myself, “Yes, George Bailey... Just like you, I am the richest man in town!” I know we’re all busy. Vic Hemard Page 4 Client Connection I’m Grateful (continued) News and Commentary (continued) Senate, and Governor. It was a close race until they rolled into town. As a result, every U.S. House seat, Senate seat, and the Governor is a conservative Republican. The state legislature is also largely Republican in a state that was strongly Democrat a few years ago. If I’m a conservative candidate, I want the Clintons to come to Arkansas to campaign for the Democrats. Bring the Obamas, too. Just having morally corrupt politicians on the opposite side who consider themselves elites who know what is good for us more than we do is all the information voters need not to vote for their candidates. The strategy of meeting elites head-on, cutting taxes, and producing jobs worked for Scott Walker in Wisconsin. As governor of Wisconsin, he was elected governor three times in four years by going against the Clintons, the Obamas, and the unions. Against all odds, you might say. But, maybe they’re not as popular as the mainstream media says they are. Obamacare is even less popular. Of the Senate Democrats who voted for Obamacare, 30 are no longer in office. The last of the 30 was Mary Landrieu, who bit the dust December 6. The message sent in November was to repeal Obamacare. Some say it was repeal and replace Obamacare. I say just defund, repeal, and don’t try to replace it with another government program. I trust letting the doctors be doctors and letting the drug companies and the insurance companies compete in the free market more than I trust big government. The best medical system in the world is being ruined by socialists and faculty lounge lizards in the administration who haven’t the slightest notion of how the free market works. Nor do they trust it. They’ve never started a business or had to make a payroll or (Continued from page 1) (Continued on page 6) By the end of December, you can expect to receive an update for the Forest Products Accounting (FPA) system. One of the main benefits of this update will be an improved and even more user-friendly Accounts Receivable (AR) module. In the past, the AR was somewhat unforgiving if you selected the wrong ticket and posted it. There wasn’t an opportunity to work with the complete payment before posting to the AR and the general ledger. In the new AR, you have much more control over how you apply payments to invoices (tickets). Basically, you can check or uncheck the tickets you wish to apply payment to and then post them as paid after you have the proper tickets selected. This is one of many benefits you can expect in the year-end 2014 update as FPA continues its ongoing mission of innovation and process improvement. Sometimes we can learn a lesson from our grand- children, even if they’re just five months old. We just returned from a visit to my daughter and son-in-law and, of course, my granddaughter Juliet. We had a chance to hold her and talk to her, take her to church, and just hang out, as they say. She is at the age where she has started to smile and engage with us and we enjoy talking and singing to her as well as even those quiet times when she is getting tired. One thing is for sure: it’s difficult to multi-task around a five-month old. I don’t even try! I didn’t spend much time on the phone or do many other things during our recent visit with Juliet. If I had, I would have missed a lot. I would have missed her smile and her eyes telling me to talk to her and make her smile. Or, when she was a little fussy, to nurture her and help her feel secure. Or, just during the time we walked to church or sat on a the front porch on a sunny day, I watched how she absorbed everything around her, taking in every detail, every slight gust of wind, every color around her… everything… not missing anything. There is the lesson in this, of course: Live within the moment. Be present. Engage with other persons. Be where you are, not off in the land of constant distractions with e-mail, smart phones, and small talk on social media. This means staying away from smart phones at the dinner table. Have a conversation. Look someone else in the eye and listen. Get off of facebook when engaging with your family. Get outside and experience all the newness nature has to offer. I repeat, be present! You might then actually have a real life to talk about!
  • 5. Books I’ve Read Recently Valedictorians provide us with a life lesson. I’ve known quite a few high school valedictorians. Most of them graduated from the high school in our school district, Pleasant Grove High School, from 1999 to 2005. In our school district, there can only be one. There are no ties. I know one especially well, my daughter Laura, who was valedictorian of the class of 2003. As a friend of mine and Laura’s godfather, Billy Smith, once said, “Not everyone has the ability to be number one in their class.” Billy was right, there has to be a gift of a certain level of intelligence. I don’t deny that. It’s a given. Sometimes a valedictorian has the highest IQ. Sometimes not. From my experience, valedictorians have a lot more going for them. First and foremost, valedictorians are very consistent. While they may not make the very highest grade in every class, they are consistently at or near the top of an individual class. They may struggle with certain subjects, but seem to be able to bear down and press harder when the going gets tough. They are relentless and not easily discouraged. All of the high school valedictorians I know have a high level of motivation... not to be valedictorian, but motivation to succeed. Being number one in their class is not on their mind, at least through the 11th grade. They simply give it their best shot and let the chips fall as they may. The unique thing about Laura’s experience was she was ranked No.1 in her class after her junior year and purposely avoided telling anyone. She did not want to put any undue pressure on herself. The unofficial class rankings during a student’s career in high school are only made available to the parents upon request, so it wasn’t public knowledge. I watched Laura move up from 10th to 4th to 1st in 2 years. She just pressed on and consistently kept taking the hard courses and doing the assignments. Just giving it her best shot… with no regrets and no excuses. Now that’s a life lesson! Page 5 American Sniper by Chris Kyle American Sniper, Memorial Edition, is the second book I’ve read by Chris Kyle. The first was American Gun. I recommend both books. American Sniper is particularly timely since there will be a movie based on the book coming to theaters on January 16th. I suspect the movie will be something to see. Chris Kyle was a Navy SEAL and American war hero who, from 1999 to 2009, recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. Kyle was tragically killed as a civilian in February 2013 at age 38 by a fellow veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. What really prompted me to buy and read this book was the news that former wrestler, Navy SEAL, and governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura won a lawsuit and was granted a $1.84 million award against Kyle’s wife Taya, his children, and his estate. Ventura claimed his character was defamed in this book, even though he was not even mentioned by name. Hey Jesse, if you don’t want your character defamed, how about not suing the wife and children of an American hero and taking $1.84 million in the process! In any case, the memorial edition of this book is an autobiography of Chris Kyle as boy growing up in Texas, as a Navy SEAL, and as a husband and father. It also has additional photos and memorial tributes from family and friends. The book is written in plain English. It’s just like you were sitting right across from Chris Kyle, having a conversation. I think you’ll enjoy the book and Kyle’s personal insights as a SEAL and as a family man.
