The document discusses various elements of the Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera". It describes the elaborate props used, including the chandelier's prominent role. It also discusses the extensive costumes used, with over 1,200 pieces and 14 dressers assisting. The musical score is generally sung-through with minimal dialogue. The choreography and blocking of the performers on the small stage is praised, as is the lavish lighting design including the chandelier. The accompaniment of the orchestra and 200 speakers used for surround sound is also highlighted. The lead actors are described as perfectly fitting their roles and singing beautifully, particularly Ramin Karimloo as The Phantom.

The Phantom's Chandelier: An Analysis of the Props in The Phantom of the Opera Musical
1. 2. PROPS
The props had
been displayed
already at the
beginning of the
show while the
orchestra played
their instruments.
As I watch the
show, I noticed
that they gave
major significance on the chandelier among all the props, and as I go on watching I
find out that it is because the chandelier has a major part on one of the significant
scene of the show.
You can really see inthe
movie that the props and
the set are well thought
out, that nothing seems
to be out of place and as I
done my research, I also
find out that the set of
The Phantom of the
Opera was indeed beyond
description for according
to what I have searched
online there are 120
automated cues, 22 scene changes, 281 candles, 250 kg of dry ice, 10 fog and smoke
machines that was used on the said show. Now isn’t that a lot. It is undoubtedly one of the
most budgeted Broadway show just by looking at their props.
2. 3. COSTUMES
Aside from the
performance of the
Phantom of the
Opera’s casts, I was
also astonished by the
costumes that been
wore by the casts of
this show. Their
costumes make the
show spectacular and
extravagant!
That you can
actually see just
by watching the
show, that their
production team
spent huge
amount of money
for their
wardrobe.
Each of the
characters’
costumes has a style of its own. According to what I have searched online, the show
used 1,200 Costume pieces in the show (some of which are over 25 years old and
were used in original performances), 50 mustaches in stock for the cast’s many
costumes and employed 14 dressers to assist the casts in changing their costume.

3. 4. MUSIC
Since I am not used on watching such an extravagant musical play, I cannot
evaluate the music that been exhibited in the show, aside from what I have watched
that it was accompanied by an orchestra. And I was really astounded while
watching a whole orchestra performed the ensemble music for the play. They’re one
of the reasons why I am so amazed all throughout the show. But to give more
credible evaluation, I have to look over the internet to share necessary information
about the musical score of the show and according to them The Phantom of the
Opera is generally considered a “sung-through” musical, in which there is little-to-
no-spoken dialogue. Meaning that there is a minimal spoken dialogue, that most of
the time the characters sing as they conversing with each other. Predominantly any
“sung-through” musical is considered more “operatic” in style. And we can see it
on The Phantom of the Opera, where the characters still sing evenon just a few
lines. Moreover, all original Andrew Lloyd Webber songs were performed by an
orchestra of 17 musicians. According to the article, the orchestrations of the “The
Phantom of the Opera” have been updated to reflect the production’s modern feel,
but the score and lyrics remain true to the original.

4. 5. CHOREOGRAPHY
The inclusion of Corps de Ballet in the show added unforgettable greatness to the
choreography of the show, and these ballerinas are amazingly good, because despite
of the smallness of the stage and the huge number of casts on it, they still manage to
execute they’re routine really well.
They’re contribution is a huge part why the show is great.
5. But there is something that I noticed while I am watching the show and I cannot help
myself not to include it here in my evaluation sheet. I noticed that unlike on “Joseph the
Dreamer” where the lead stars can also sing and do the choreographies, the leading stars of
“The Phantom of the Opera” were good more on singing than of dancing, you can see that
on the dancing part of the show, the lead stars were removed and place at the side of the
stage.
Particularly the scene of Christine Daae and Meg Giry when they’re supposed to be
included on the scene since they are the chorus girls who are dancing but they were at the
right side of the stage and do adlibs. They were just placed in front of the stage and do
minimal steps after the ballerinas finish the routine. Kudos to the Joseph the Dreamer’s
casts!
6. 6. BLOCKING
Despite of the smallness of the stage, the Stage director of “The Phantom of the
Opera” did not fail to determines the actors’ movement and position into the
platform, that eventhough the stage was filled with many characters in the story.
The performers manage to carry out the action or pattern that was needed to
effectively deliver their performance. It is doubtless that the Play director map out
the actor’s movement really well.
7. 7. LIGHTING
For a musical that seems to have an unlimited budget, what more can I say than to praise
the lighting effects and lighting designs of the show. It was also spectacular and lavish,
because based on what I have searched, there are 85 Moving lights used for the visual
effects (accompanied by 4 different kinds of haze/smoke effects) to create the dramatic,
dark feel that the “The Phantom of the Opera” is known for.
And the highlights of the lighting design: the chandelier, that according to the source it
holds 6,000 bead, it weighs 1,500 pounds and they incorporates it with pyrotechnics that
allow chandelier to light up, shake, explode, and drop., and the one who designed it is the
Howard Eaton Lighting Limited the same designer of the 2012 Olympic rings.

8. 8. SOUNDS- AUDIO & SOUND EFFECTS
Another thing that makes this musicale amazing, fabulous and staggering is the
accompaniment of the orchestra to do the audio and sound effects of the show. This
makes “The Phantom of the Opera” superb! Watching them playing their
instruments while the characters did their scene filled me with awe and
astonishment. I believe that they were among the reasons why this Broadway show
is famous. It is also worth to mention that they used 200 speakers in each
performance, to enwrap the audience with their surround sound technology music.

9. 9. ACTORS – VOICE, SINGING, UTTERANCE
Everything about “The Phantom of the Opera” is flamboyant, extravagant, excellent
and so much more. The casts are perfect for their characters as if the musical is
specially made for them.
Sierra Boggess the one who
portrayed as Christine Daae was
indeed an Angel of Music! She
gave justice to the character and
did no single mistake with her
lines and she’s just perfect for the
role because of her lovely face!
The Phantom, was portrayed by Ramin Karimloo, he was just as perfect as
Christine. The prosthetics
and the make-up which
needed 2 hours to put on
and 30 minutes to take off
added to the power of his
presence. His voice created
goosebumps in me. For me
he is the best singer among
all the singers on that
particular show, he is fit to
the character as a music
genius who possessedall the qualities to become the mentor of Christine Daae.
10. Viscount Raoul De Chagny, the
childhood sweetheart of
Christine Daae was portrayed by
Hadley Frase, he is indeed good
looking that makes him perfect
for the role as Christine’s
sweetheart. He is good in his
acting and he can also sing, but
not as good as the one who
portrayed as The Phantom.
Another character that is worth
praising for in the show is
Wendy Ferguson, the one who
portrayed as Carllota, the fact
that almost all of her costumes
are heavy and yet she’s able to
effectively execute her role is
surprising. She really did a
great job on this show.
I also loved what they did on the last part because you’ll get to see everyone that has
been part of the history of Phantom of the Opera. One thing I could say is the film
will surely give you the feeling that you’re with the audience there in the Royal
Albert Hall. Generally, everything in the film was excellently done. Everyone from
the production team to the artists really did their best in doing the show. What an
excellent production by Cameron Mackintosh! No wonder why this Broadway show
is among the famous one of all time.
