RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
M. Sc., PROJECT WORK: Invitro Screening of salt tolerance in Vigna mungo L. (Black
gram)
Salt stress is a major abiotic stress adversely affecting the yield of Vigno munga
(Black gram), an important pulse crop. This study was focused on screening the salt tolerating
ability under in vitro condition, for callus induction, callus proliferation and screening the salt
tolerating callus. The calli were induced from embryo of Vigno mungo in MS media
supplemented with different concentration of 2,4-D (MSD20, 20mg/L;MSD30, 30mg/L; MSD40,
40mg/L). Increased callus induction was obtained in MSD40 when compare to other
concentrations. The growh calli were obtained from MSD20, MSD30 and MSD40 media and sub
cultured in MSD agar with different salt concentration (control, 50, 60 and 70 mM NaCl). There
was no response observed in 60 and 70 mM NaCl. The maximum tolerating ability was shown in
MSD40 with 50 mM NaCl then others. Finally conclude, the concentration of NaCl was
increased, the growth of callus was arrested. The Vigno mungo had the tolerating ability only in
50 mM NaCl.

Tree improvement programme experience in TNPL:
Six years experience in Tree improvement progamme as following criteria
1. Germ plasm assemblage :
1000 new clones including provenance, half sib progeny and inter and intra species
hybrids assembled in TNPL gene bank.
2. Development of Indoor/Outdoor Breeding Orchard:
1000 grafted plants assembled in Breeding Orchard. It’s including
E.camaldulensis, E.pellita, Urograndis, E.tereticornis, E.urophylla,
Corymbia citriodora, C. torelliana and Dihybrids.
3. Development of Inter and Intra species Hybrid seed lots:
150 full sib, both inter and intra species hybrid seed lots were produced and
progeny trials were established in various agro climatic zones. The hybrids were
produced by AIP crossing technique.
4. New Provenance and species:
TNPL has imported 36 new Eucalyptus provenances seed lots from Australian tree
seed center (ATSC), CSIRO, Australia and 24 Casuarina provenances seed lots
from various countries and established provenance trials in five agro climatic
regions within Tamilnadu.
5. Multi Location Research trial:
150 research trials including Provenance trial, Hybrid progeny trial, clonal
Evaluation trial and Clonal Testing trials were established in five agro climatic
zones in TamilNadu.
6. Seed orchards Establishment:
One acres of Eucalyptus seed orchard established by grafted plants and 2 acres of
Eucalyptus seed orchard established by 2nd
generation provenance seed lots
VENKATESAN BIO DATAVENKATESAN BIO DATA
6. Two acres of Casuarina seed orchard established by 3rd
generation provenance seed
lots
7. CPT selection:
250 Candidate Plus Trees were selected from Eucalyptus hybrid progeny trials
and Provenance Trials established in 2011 & 2012. The selected CPT ramets were
multiplied and used for clonal evaluation trials under different agro climatic
regions.
33 CPTs in Casuarina junghuhniana and 8 CPTs in C.equisetifoia species were
selected from provenance trials. These selected CPTs were multiplied and
established in clonal evaluation trials under different agro-climatic regions.
7 CPTs Khaya senegalensis and 1 Corombia hybrid CPT (C.citriodera x C.
torelliana) were selected from provenance trial and multiplied
In Indigenous species 26 CPTs in Melia dubia and 4 CPTs in Thespesia populania
were selected from provenance trial at Sennampatti and selected CPTs were
multiplied.
8. On-Farm Trial clones
Two hybrid clones were selected from clonal evaluation trial and mass multiplied.
These clones were established as On-Farm trials at various agro-climatic regions.
These clones details as below,
i) E.camaldulensis x E.camaldulensis - Drought & high pulp
ii) E.camaldulensis x E.pellia - High pulp & pest tolerant
9. Vegetative Propagation
TNPL has established Clonal Propagation and Research Center having production
capacity 15 million clonal plants per annum through mini cutting technology
without any rooting hormones. It includes Eucalyptus, Casuarina, Melia, Acacia
and D.Sissoo.
10. Seedling Production
TNPL has established seedling nursery which having production capacity 10
million seedling plants per annum both Eucalyptus and Casuarina through quality
seeds from second generation seed orchards.
11. Mobile documentation of Farm forestry plantation programme
VENKATESAN BIO DATAVENKATESAN BIO DATA
7. TNPL launch mobile based software. This mobile based mobile monitoring system
used for new farmer registration, Existing farmer registration, pre planting
monitoring, plants distribution, plot planting inspection, periodic inspection, pre
harvest inspection, pulpwood supply, plot harvest inspection and weather
information.
12. Molecular Biology Lab
Isolation and Quantification of DNA from Hybrid Eucalyptus clone and using
markers to identify hybridization pattern.
Contribution to TNPL
1. During 2011, Gall tolerant Eucalyptus camaldulensis EC 4 clone mass multiplied through
mini cutting technique and supplied to Farm Forestry farmers. Now these clone being
cultivated entire country and become as a National clone. Almost across the country, 12
States cultivating this clone.
2. Similarly, 2012 Cellulose rich and high productivity Casuarina junghuhniana CJ 9 clone
mass multiplied through mini cutting technique and supplied to Farm Forestry farmers.
Now this clone being cultivated entire south Indian farmers.
3. Apart from this, I have involved in developing Indigenous fast growing species Melia
dubia clone. During 2012 Cellulose rich and high productivity Melia dubia TNPL MD 1
clone mass multiplied through mini cutting technique and supplied to Farm Forestry
farmers. Now this clone being cultivated entire south Indian farmers.
