2. Essentials of communication
The sender & the receiver use the same
language & express the ideas in commonly
understood words, with brevity &
completeness.
Avoid technical words & abbreviations that are
not in use.
There should be clarity in the expression of
ideas. The sender clearly states what, why, how,
when, who, where etc. of any specific event.
Pay attention to the non verbal messages
accompanying the verbal messages. Non verbal
messages are much closer to the truth than
verbal messages.
3. Cont…
One should be aware of both relevance & timing
when communicating with others.
Eg: A client who is in physical & mental agony may
not listen to the explanations of the nurse.
There should be adjustability & adaptability.
Spoken messages need to be altered according
to the behavior pattern of the receiver which
may change hour by hour or day by day.
The sender should have a thorough knowledge
of the subject being discussed & the information
that is given by her should be accurate in order
to create confidence in others.
To be really helpful, a nurse continuously
develops her skills of effective communication-
by listening, problem solving & self disclosure.
4. Cont…
To be a good listener means:
Face the person who talks.
Maintain good eye contact.
Maintain a natural, well-relaxed posture that
indicates your interest.
Eg: Leaning forward towards the other. If the
listener repeatedly looks at the watch, it
indicates that she is neither interested in the talk
nor relaxed.
Getting & giving feedback is essential for
effective communication.
5. Barriers of communication
A message may be distorted by the following:
Emotional factors such as
Fear
Suspicion
Jealousy
