2. What is
pre-production?
Pre-production is a work done before actual shooting, it
is a planning stage, which includes:
Script writing
Location search and secure (script breakdown)
List of equipment and hiring crew
List of costumes and props (script breakdown)
Storyboarding and shot list the scenes
Budgeting and shooting schedule.
Casting actors
Most of producers consider pre-production one of the most
important parts in film production, it helps the filming part go
smooth and fast.
Pre-production starts after the script is worked into a viable
final draft.
3. People involved
in
pre-production
The two main positions within the film
production are producer and director.
Once the script is finalized, the director,
cinematographer, producers, first assistant
director, production managers, production
coordinators, and site scouts are frequently
involved.
Costume designer and possibly the make-up and
hair departments might also be required.
4. Story development & Costumes
One of the most important question in a process of story development are: is anything
in this story true? Is the screenplay going to work on set?
The more precise script will be written while pre-production the more chances of filming
going smoothly. Then comes work on the screenplay breakdown.
Breakdown – everything crew will need while filming, such as costumes, props, setting.
Costumes are prepared with costume designer for them to depict the time in which the
action takes place, the social status of the hero and his profession. Also copies of
costumes might be needed, because you never know what can happen while shooting.
5. Conclusion
Pre-production stage in filmmaking is needed to ensure fast,
easy and organized work during filming. Storyboarding and
shot list of scenes will help the actors understand how to get
up and play within the frame, and the script written in detail
will give them an understanding of the emotions and the
character that they are playing.
It appears that the script is the basis of the pre-production,
from which all the other steps of the pre-production are made.
Pre-production is used not only in filmmaking, but also
in commercials, music videos, short films, and feature films.
