4. THE
WONDERFUL
KINGDOM
Placed in the interior north of Portugal, the city of Chaves is set in a
fertile valley in the region of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro - the Wonderful
Kingdom, as Miguel Torga wrote. Bathed by river Tâmega, the city is
found in the border of Spain and is integrated in an important
cross-border partnership with its Galician congener – Verín – forming
Eurocity Chaves-Verín.
Stage to the encounter of civilizations, the history of Chaves contains the
presence of the Celts in its surroundings. However, the Romans would
be the ones settling in the banks of river Tâmega, thus founding Aquae
Flaviae. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Chaves was successively
occupied by the Barbarians, the Arabs and, after the Christian
Reconquest, it would become a territory of the Reign of Leon, with Dom
Afonso being responsible for its reconstruction. Finally, in 1160, it
became a part of the Reign of Portugal, having been an important
bastion of the defense of our national identity throughout the centuries.
Nowadays Chaves is a landmark in the region and it is also an important
urban stand, thanks to its cultural vitality, its architectural heritage and
the promotion and development of its cultural and social identity.
5. THE
WONDERFUL
KINGDOM
Trajano bridge is the town’s ex-libris, preserved over the River Tâmega. The
castle and the typical urban medieval feature compose the painting of a
historical town. Famous by its thermal activity, Chaves owns the hottest
waters in the European continent, which flow at 76ºC on the surface, and it is
a famous thermal destination.
From the gastronomic richness, the taste and texture of the dishes and
delicacies highlighted, which characterizes the local gastronomy: the unique
Presunto de Chaves, the incomparable Pastel de Chaves (a product
recognized as geographical indication), the traditional Folar de Chaves and
the variety of Fumeiro, accompanied by the best wine, contribute to the
definition of Chaves as the best destination choice.
The community of Chaves – Flavienses - belongs to a region characterized by
its genuineness, the art of well-welcoming and the evident human warmth.
Land of opportunities, Chaves opens doors so that its history takes shape in
our - and now yours - community!

Module 1: An Introduction
to Blockchain Technology
30 In this introductory module will be given an overview of
Blockchain, where the trainees will learn how to
understand the general concept of the blockchain
technology and how it is generically being used today.
They'll also learn how to demonstrate the ability to
download and use the MetaMask plug-in to access
Etherscan and Ethereum (blockchain explorer and
platform, respectively), as well as to analyze the basic
information shown in the Ethereum user interface.
Module 2: Bitcoin 30 Evaluate Bitcoin as a specific application of blockchain
technology that solves a meaningful problem. Analyze
this cryptocurrency as a store of value, medium of
exchange and unit of account.
Module 3: Costless
Verification. Blockchain
Technology and the Last
Mile Problem
30 This module will focus on the impact of blockchain
technology on the economy and society due to its
ability to provide (almost) costless verification of
transaction attributes on a decentralized network.
Blockchain is a general-purpose technology with the
potential to disrupt intermediation in markets, but it is
subject to the “last mile” problem of bridging the
physical assets exchanged in transactions to their
digital avatars on the chain. The module will discuss
this problem building on the case study of managing
digital identities.
Module 4: Bootstrapping
Network Effects through
Blockchain Technology
30 This module will focus on the ability of
blockchain-based platforms to take advantage of
network effects to bootstrap their own growth.
Blockchain-based platforms can incentivize adoption
and reach scale through their own design, but their
growth is subject to performance trade-offs that may
limit their scalability. The module will discuss
technological solutions to these trade-offs building on
the case studies of the Bitcoin and Ethereum platforms.

Portuguese 300 These classes will provide an excellent opportunity for
students at different levels to improve their linguistic
proficiency while learning more about the Lusophone
world. The classes will include readings, grammar,
composition, discussion of articles relevant to current
topics, music and the use of film as the basis of
teaching vocabulary, strengthening oral and written
skills and presenting Lusophone culture.
French 230 The basic objectives of these classes are to help each
student attain proficiency in the four skills of
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The
language is presented within the context of the
contemporary French-speaking world and its culture.
Seminars 24 CIEIFM students learn by engaging with community
partners. Seminars and community life are part of
every course and involves authentic activities that
allow you to apply and hone your growing knowledge.
These learning experiences combine coursework and
assessment with practical application in real-world
settings.
