4. There are two types of self-awareness
1.Internal self-awareness: also knows as “private self-awareness”
how aware we are of our internal state i.e. how clearly we see our own values,
passions, aspirations beliefs, reactions (including thoughts, feelings, behaviors,
strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others.
2. External self-awareness: also knows as “public self-awareness”
understanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors listed
above.
Self awareness is looking into yourself;
the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or do
not align with your internal standards.
6. Various researches and studies have found
that people who tend to have high self-
awareness are
• secured (confident),
• nurture better relationships and
• lead happier life in general.
7. more about yourself? Now that we know how important self awareness is, lets
talk about some ways we can heighten our self-awareness. What are some of the
ways or things that can help you learn/know about yourself
1.Feedback: asking others about you. Feedback serves as a great source of
information when it comes to understanding oneself from others point of view
and learning what can be done to be or do better.
2.Diary writing or journaling: helps you reflect back on your daily experiences and
gain in-depth understanding about your thought processes, triggers, reactions
(emotions) etc.
3.Mindfulness practice: enhances our overall awareness of our state within and
our environment. It promotes our ability to monitor and understand thoughts
and emotions as they arise
4.Another effective activity that can help boost our self-awareness is, “Johari
window”, an activity that we will do now.
10. Facilitator to briefly explain the four quadrants in the worksheet. Each participant will
reflect on themselves and fill the quadrants with the adjectives from the previous slide.
1.From the 20 words you have, choose those that are common and put them in the
OPEN quadrant (Worksheet). This Arena is your traits of which everyone is aware.
2.Whichever words you – and only you – chose, are your hidden traits. Put them in the
HIDDEN quadrant. This is the hidden information about you that your friends might
not know about. It’s totally up to you if you want to share these.
3.The words that your friends chose, that you did not choose? These are your blind
spots. Although you may not know this about yourself, your friends and family do. Put
them in the BLIND SPOTS quadrant.
4.All the rest of the words from the list are unknown to you. Of course they are within
you somewhere, they just haven’t come out to play yet. You can choose few that you
aspire to develop and put them in your UNKNOWN quadrant.
Editor's Notes
Facilitator instructions:
Facilitator will display the question or write the term, “Self-awareness” on the board and ask participants their understanding of the term.
If it helps, write down the answers contributed by the participants on the board as and when they contribute.
Self awareness is, knowing one’s internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. Simply put, it is understanding or knowing about oneself.
