In a rectangular bed it is easy to mix the
compost compared to when in a circular bed

16. Materials Needed
• Instead of using cement, use steel sheets plus
bamboos sticks for the support of rectangular
bed.
• Tools Needed: Hammer and punch, Cutting
plier, Crowbar, Rake, thin steel wire

19. How to do it
Step:1 Identify the location to set up the bed ,
Were the resources are freely transferable.
Step:2 Level that area by digging (or) spreading a layer of soil

20. • Mark the dimensions of the bed on the ground
using measuring a tape. (8Lx4wx3 cu ft)

21. • Put the markings for bamboos at regular
intervals (2ft apart) on the ground

22. Dig a deep hole with a
crowbar to put the
bamboos
Check if all the bamboos
are on the same
alignment and height.

23. • Put a mark on the steel sheet with a marker
for inserting the wire to be tied to the
bamboo sticks
• Create a hole at the marked place on the steel
sheet with a nail and hammer

24. • Put the steel sheet in place with the bamboo
sticks kept outside and tie it up (with the help
of the wire) to the bamboos

25. • When the bed is ready, fill half of the bed with
the waste (garden and kitchen waste)
• Water it properly
• Shift it to other side of the bed on the next
day and so on for better mixing

• Appoint a person for carrying out the below daily
composting activities and give him/her the required
training
a. Spend 15-30 minutes everyday for the upkeep of the
compost beds at a fixed time in the day

32. b. Carry out key tasks like
1. Ensuring right moisture level by watering
2. Tilling the compost pile at least twice a week (Wed &
Sat)
3. Shred larger pieces of waste before placing in
compost bed
4. Keep the compost bed and surrounding area clean
and tidy
5. Harvest the compost when ready
