THE SPANISH MINISTRY OF ECONOMY AND
COMPETITIVENESS LAUNCHES A NEW €35M
VENTURE CAPITAL FUND FOR BIOTECH
COMPANIES
The Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, in
collaboration with the financial entity “La Caixa”,
has created the Caixa Innvierte BioMed Alliance, a
new €35m fund to invest in companies specialised
in the development of new methods for diagnosis,
therapeutics and medical technology.

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION REVIEWS
THE SPANISH SCIENCE SYSTEM
A group of nine experts from five countries of
the European Union (Belgium, Germany, Estonia,
France and Sweden), four independent and two
representatives of the European Commission,
held meetings with representatives of the
Spanish R&D and innovation system. Their
assessment will help to implement the future
Spanish Agency for Research and improve the
Spanish system of science as a whole.
MADRID WILL HOST THE FIRST EUROPEAN 3D
PRINTING CONGRESS
It will bring specialists from all over the world
together to assess the potential of 3D Printing. At
least 15 different experts and organizations
involved from Spain, The Netherlands, UK, Estonia,
Germany will share their professional views and
knowledge. Attendees from Europe will join the
conference to network, share ideas and create new
partnerships.

THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF MATERIALS,
MINERALS AND MINING (IOM3) AWARDS
SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY OF FOUR SPANISH
CEIT-IK4 RESEARCHERS
They have received the Charles Hatchett Award
2014, the most prestigious international prize
awarded by the IOM3, for the " most complete
and innovative scientific-technological work
relating to niobium and its alloys".

THE JAPANESE RED CROSS SOCIETY (JRCS)
CHOOSES A SPANISH SYSTEM TO ANALYZE
BLOOD DONATIONS
Grifols, a global healthcare company focused on
bioscience, diagnostics and solutions for hospitals,
will provide the JRCS with its innovative NAT
technology (Nucleic Acid Amplification Technique)
in order to help analyze the 5.3 million blood
donations that are made in Japan every year. The
JRCS chose the Spanish system after evaluating all
of the available options in the market.
SPANISH SCIENTISTS DEVELOP AND PATENT
A MICROFLUIDIC FUEL CELL ON PAPER
Scientists at the Instituto de Microelectrónica de
Barcelona (IMB- CNM) have developed a
microfluidic fuel cell on paper, which in the future
could replace the button-batteries in diagnostic
kits.

MEDICATIONS OF THE FUTURE FROM A
SPANISH MANUFACTURER
Manufacturing biotechnology drugs used to treat
colon cancer or multiple sclerosis is a very complex
process that is carried out in specialized production
centers. One of these, the only one of its kind in Spain
and one of the few in Europe, is owned by the
company 3P Biopharmaceuticals.

SPANISH BIOTECHNOLOGY COMPANY
ORYZON LICENSES TWO PATENT FAMILIES
TO ROCHE
Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Roche has licensed
the development and subsequent sale of two
patent families and molecules from Spanish
biotechnology company Oryzon Genomics, which
will be used in the treatment of oncological and
hematological diseases.
