2. Project Overview/Purpose
The purpose of this project is to find out which
method is better for memorization.
I was learning multiplication tables at school. I just
wanted to read the tables. But my mom told me
that I will have the tables memorized faster if I
write down the tables.
This experiment helps me find out which method
is better for memorizing.
3. Hypothesis
I think ‘reading’ will be a better method than
‘writing’. Because when you say over and over
again, you remember it better.
Writing will not be as effective as reading because
your brain does not remember movements from
your mouth.
5. Variables and Constants
Independent variables
• Memorization method
Dependent variables
• Number of words memorized correctly
Constants
• Set of 10 random words chosen for reading
• Set of 10 random words chosen for writing
6. Procedure
1. For the reading test, write 10 random words on an
index card
2. For the writing test, write 10 random words on an
index card
3. Ask participant to read the reading index card for
reading test and memorize the words
4. Ask the person to say out the words they memorized
5. Note down their name, age, and number of words
successfully memorized using the reading method
7. Procedure (contd.)
6. Ask the same person to read the writing index card
for the writing test and copy them on notebook
paper
7. Then, ask the same person to say out loud the words
memorized for writing test
8. Note the person’s name, age, and number of words
successfully memorized using the writing method
9. Repeat steps 3 through 8 with multiple participants

13. Conclusion
Many people have different strategies to
remember things. Through my experiment, I
found the writing method to be more effective
than the reading method. I concluded that my
hypothesis was partially right as the reading
method was still effective, although not as
effective as the writing method.
14. Research
I researched books about how memories are
formed. I learned that brain records things with
things around it based on hearing, seeing, and
others.
I also researched the internet and found some
really good information. Your brain memorizes
things that are reasonable. People are able to
recall things if they are put in groups.
15. Future Research
During my experiment, I found that some
people memorize by listening (e.g. audio
books). Hence in future, I would include
listening as a memorization method in addition
to reading and writing. Also, I found that some
people took a long time to memorize words.
Hence, in future, I would limit the amount of
time used for memorization.
