1. DEPICTION OF HELL AND HEAVEN
IN PARADISE LOST BY JOHN MILTON.

3. DESCRIPTION OF HELL:
 In book one Milton describes what happened to the
fallen angels who dared to challenge GOD.
He states that:
“hurled headlong flaming from the ethereal sky
with hideous ruin and combustion down
to bottom less perdition there to dwell
in adamantine chains and penal fire
his horrid crew
lay vanquished, rolling in the fiery gulf”

4. DESCRIPTION OF HELL:
 The first description of hell is very clearly a place of
terror and torment.
 Hell in described as:
“Dismal situation waste and wild
A dungeon horrible, on all slides round
as one great furnace flamed, yet from those flames
No light but rather darkness visible”

5. HELL:
 Milton uses darkness and imagery to indicate the
horridness of Hell
 “fiery gulf (52)
 “dungeon horrible” (61)
 “No light, but rather darkness visible” (63)
 “discover sights of woe” (64)

6. HELL:
“Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace
And rest can never dwell, hope never comes
That comes to all; but torture without end
Still urges…
Such place Eternal Justice had prepared
For those rebellious, here their prison ordained
In utter darkness, and their portion set
As far removed from God and the light of Heaven”
(65-73).
 Physical torment- fiery yet dark
 Physiological pain
 “doom” “Lost happiness” “dismay”
 Eternal punishment
 Light and dark imagery

7. DESCRIPTION OF HEAVEN
 At the top of the universe is Heaven it is inhabited
by GOD and those angels who did not rebel against
GOD.

8. LIGHT:
 The primary quality of heaven is light, GOD is pure
light of such quality that the angels must observe
him through a cloud. The angels themselves are
also a type of stunning pure light but not
comparable to the light of GOD.
 Milton uses for this light heaven “Empyrean”
Which for classical authors was the permanent
kingdom of light or fire.

9. DESCRIPTION OF HEAVEN:
 With in heaven GOD sits at the top of a mountain
on his everlasting Throne, the Son at his side,
below GOD and Son are the angels.
