1. Survival 101 .... Who Makes the Cut?
Scenario: The Avian Flu has just wiped out the entire planet's population, except for 13 people who find
themselves to be the only people left on the earth. They manage to all make it to a safe bunker. In order
to outlive the virus, they need to survive 2 years. Only 4 can be accommodated in the bunker. Eight will
have to be expelled because there are not enough resources for all of them to survive.
If all stay, resources will sustain them for a maximum period of six month.
In the bunker, there are the following facilities:
sewage system
water
seeds
some cloths
a few books
some medical facilities but no operating material
a green house
Explain who you think should live, and present your case to the rest of the group. Argue for their life
unless you want to sacrifice them for the others. Listen to the arguments from the rest of your group as
well, and challenge them define their positions.
a. scientist
b. priest
c. married couple who are hippies and drug addict
d. a single pregnant woman with a 5 year old girl
e. a army officer who has mental instability of some sort but is useful nonetheless
f. an elderly person
g. a disabled person
h. lawyer
i. lazy welfare independent
j. doctor
k. university professor
If I have to pick 4 of them from people above, I would choose scientist, a single pregnant woman with a 5
year old girl, a army officer and doctor. The reason why I chose these people is that because firstly,
scientist. There are water, seeds and a green house available in the bunker. These are the only food
resource from available facility and I think only scientist can handle them in terms of producing food.
University professor might have knowledge about it but I believe scientist can still work the best even
though if it is out of his profession. A single pregnant woman bring the next generation and give a hope in
terms of a baby and 5 year small girl. She may also be able to create something valuable by using some
cloths.
You should always think about worst scenario that possibly can happen. What if the flu suddenly mutated
and make infected people aggressive? You never know what is going to happen. If humans could have
handle it, it would not spread entire world and let only 13 people alive. Anyway, what I want to say is that
2. if infected people become "zombies", you definitely need someone to protect. Therefore if there is a army
officer it is probably great to rely on. He should have survival skills and knowledge and he could teach
how to defend against zombies. Lastly, doctor is significantly important for surviving in this situation. He
knows well about medical facilities even though if there is no operating material, he could take care of
minor injury. Moreover, to handle for a pregnant woman when she gives a birth, there is no one else in
the group you can trust more than doctor for this.
