2. Influenza (Flu)
The flu is a viral infection that can be caused by a number of
different influenza strains.
The flu affects the lungs, throat, nose, and other parts of the body.
Unlike the common cold, the flu comes on suddenly, can make
people very sick for a week or longer, and can send them to the
hospital.
3. Reasons for Getting a Flu
Vaccine
While how well the flu vaccine works can vary, there are clearly
a lot of reasons to get a flu vaccine every year.
• Can keep you from getting sick from flu.
• Can help protect those at greater risk
• pregnant women,
• older adults,
• people with chronic health conditions
• young children
• Flu vaccination also may make your illness milder if you do get
sick.
• Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of more serious flu
outcomes, like hospitalizations.
4. Avoid Getting or Spreading the Flu
• Sneezing and coughing etiquette
• Cover mouth and nose with a tissue
• No tissue? Use your elbow or sleeve
• Wash hands frequently
• Use soap, warm water for 20 seconds
• Drink fluids and get plenty of rest
