Site Constraints
 Modular Home Community
– Move 45 structures?
– Temporary relocation for residents?
– Valve vault under home
 Pavement and MOT
 Located along bank of detention basin
 Deflections?
 Open-Cut Excavation vs. Trenchless?
Site
 Insert pictures showing proximity to lake and
homes

DESIGN
Preliminary Design Considerations
 Minimize “headaches”!
– Time pipe is out of service
– Disturbances to residents
– Pavement restoration & MOT
 Rehabilitation Goals
– Quick/simple installation
– Jointless
– Good corrosion resistivity = long life
– Known/Familiar material
Rehabilitation Method
 Trenchless Method
– HDPE (slip-lining or “swagelining”)
– FPVC (slip-lining)
– CIPP (inversion & cure)
 Selection Criteria
– Staging area(s) & access
– New pipe is “stand-alone” – minimal reliance on host pipe
– Installation of valves & fittings
– Allows use of known/familiar material
– Resultant interior pipe diameter
– Cost
Slip-Lining
 New pipe pulled inside existing host pipe
 Smaller ID required for new pipe (4” diam reduction typ.)
 Grout annular space (stabilize; minimize thermal expansion)
HDPE or Fusible PVC?
 24” DR21 C905 Fusible PVC (FPVC) selected
– Stronger (2x greater tensile strength)
– Lighter weight (2/3)
– Utilize standard DIP/MJ fittings (known/familiar)
– Larger ID (23.19” vs. 19.72”)
Hydraulic Impacts

Design Considerations
 Pre-installation explorations
– Visual observation
– CCTV inspection w/inclinometer
– Test pull 40-ft section FPVC
– Project team consensus
 PCCP reconnection
– Coordination with Hanson
 Host pipe annular space
– Low density cellular grout
Existing 30” Steel Pipe
Test Pull
 Pulled 40-ft length of FPVC pipe

Editor's Notes

  1. 220 miles (3.5 hrs) from Elyria Between Dayton and Cinci, off US75
  2. Steel plate welded over plug….got to point where city would have 2 custom fabricated plates sitting ready for use.
  3. 1900s-1950s = Interurban or radial railway era. The rise of the automobile and the creation of roads paid for by public vs. railways that were privately funded/taxed, ended the interurban era. 1938 last run was between Cleveland and Lorain.
  4. Looking North – approx 15’ width between basin and homes
  5. Approx 6 feet still under the home.
  6. Based on above the project team is beginning to realize that “Trenchless” will likely be the installation method…
  7. Based on costs, ease of installation, and level of comfort – slip-lining is selected by the project team.
  8. So what is slip-lining? Generic pulling rig shown, multiple options to pull pipe….contractor on this project used a HDD rig.
  9. FPVC offered the least reduction in ID using standard sizes with a material that the City was familiar and comfortable with in terms of fittings/connections.
  10. So to backtrack just a little,
  11. Insert cut pipe pics and test pull pics
  12. 10% thickness surface gouging depth allowed, typ for sliplining projects.
  13. Ended up with long/extended length transition coupling
  14. Engineer’s estimate; 4 bidders
  15. 16 or 28 rod magazines. Rods 15-ft long.
