Re-Paint?
Overcoat?
Clean?
Pressure Wash Cleaning
 Is tank simply “dirty”?
 “Mildew/Mold” = Fungus (microbe)
 Cleaning
1) Disable fungus
2) Heated pressure wash
3) Microbe inhibitor

Overcoat Existing System
 Advantages
– 30%-40% cost savings
– Fast! No exterior blasting & containment
 Disadvantages
– Less useful life
– Total DFTs too “heavy”
 Surface Preparation
– Low Pressure (<5,000 psi) Water Clean (SSPC LP WC)
– Hand/Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP2 or SP3)
 Primer - Epoxy (low viscosity; penetrating)
Surface Preparation
&
Coatings
Standards & Regulatory

Editor's Notes

  1. Like picking out a car! What model? HP? Options?
  2. CB&I; Caldwell; Landmark (CETs only); Phoenix Fabricators. For tanks around .75 MG, spheroids become less expensive than CETs; The rental cost for the concrete formwork and hoisting equipment is similar for all composite sizes. As the tank gets larger these prices get diluted. Also, field construction labor gets diluted as capacity increases.
  3. Like picking out a car! What model? HP? Options?
  4. Consumer Products Safety Commission
  5. Specialized cutting tool and tape, or use regular
  6. Fungus attachments and reproduction keeps paint surface wet; breaks down paint
  7. Adhesion testing results are favorable. For LP WC use Oscillating tip; Biodegradable alkaline detergent
  8. SSPC Steel Structures Painting Council
  9. For SSPC 5-10-6, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products. Difference is % staining/shadowing/discoloration that remains.
  10. Flexible reflective metal jacket
