1. Tea with Negativity
Is negative emotion really a bad thing? What if all emotions are signs?
You and I have been told that we shouldn’t cry, shouldn’t shout at someone or shouldn’t disturb
people since young. We have been taught to suppress behaviors that are troubling others
however we’ve never been taught how to manage the root of those behaviors, i.e., the
emotions.
Have you seen someone who just flipped and goes crazy out of a sudden? That’s what happens
when suppressed emotions explode, like a nuclear bomb.
I know you want to manage your negative emotions better, that’s why you’re here. In this post,
you’ll not only become friends with all your emotions but also turn them to your favor.
My mentor, Marisa Peer, Britain’s No. 1 Hypnotherapist, shared this method with me and I
named it as Having Tea with Negative Emotions (Malaysian version: Yamcha with Negative
Emotions).
The truth is, there are no ‘bad’ emotions at all. Emotions are just body signals telling us that
something is happening. Untrained people who don’t listen to their emotions will react instantly
without going through the rational brain. They’re commonly known as ‘short-tempered’ people.
By using this method, you’ll learn to listen to your emotions, understand the purpose of their
existence and use them to calm yourself down.
This method flipped my mood from anger to calm, at will.
My girlfriend and I were late for an event and she needs a long time to prepare. I started to get
frustrated and angry because I hate being late. At that moment, I caught myself feeling angry so
I had a tea session with ‘anger’. I asked him 3 questions,
KarFei: Why are you here? What are you here to tell me?
Anger: I’m here to tell you that you’re late! You won’t have time to finish your work!
KarFei: What are you teaching me today?
Anger: You need to learn to manage your time better, finish all of your work before going out
and plan for a specific agenda!
KarFei: What can I learn about myself?
Anger: Huh!? How would I know? Ask yourself.
KarFei: Okay, I realized I’m angry for the sake of angry. In fact, we’re not late at all.
2. Notice the third question is slightly different? It’s to show you that you are not your emotion, nor
they are you.
From anger to calm. That’s the power of Having Tea with Negative Emotions. Suppression and
ignorance don’t work and never will, you know it best. Face them from a place of curiosity and
understanding helps you to make negative emotions work for you.
