2. Introduction
Thomas E. Tate has spent the last 33 years designing and
constructing homes as owner and president of Tate
Builders, Inc., based out of Martha's Vineyard. Thomas
(Tom) Tate also lives in Martha's Vineyard and contributes
to the community.
In regards to the film industry, the small Massachusetts
island of Martha’s Vineyard is best known as the location of
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. Despite being set in the fictional
town of Amityville, a number of the movie’s locations are
instantly recognizable to locals or any individuals who have
spent time on the island.
3. Martha’s Vineyard
On the other hand, a number of Hollywood movies have
been set on fictional versions of the island, with scenes
taking place on the Vineyard being shot off location.
The 2003 comedy Stuck On You, directed by Rhode Island
natives Bobby and Peter Farrelly and starring Matt Damon
and Greg Kinnear, for example, begins with a pair of
brothers living on the island and includes several
references to the town of Oak Bluffs. The majority of the
Vineyard scenes were filmed elsewhere, though the movie
includes scenes in Oak Bluffs and shots of Edgartown,
Menemsha, and the iconic Martha’s Vineyard ferry.
4. Conclusion
More recently, the 2011 Angela Bassett picture Jumping
the Broom takes place over the course of a wedding
weekend on the island. Similar to Stuck On You,
filming on location occurred infrequently for director
Salim Akil. However, the film crew captured extensive
shots of Vineyard Haven’s scenic harbor while a
number of scenes take place on the Vineyard ferry and
at the Vineyard Haven ferry terminal.
