Thomas E. Tate served as the manager at the Martha's Vineyard International Youth Hostel. As the owner of Tate Builders Inc., a home design and construction company, Thomas Tate uses biophilic design for construction. Biophilic design is a form of design and construction that seeks to connect occupants to nature by implementing natural elements into buildings. The goal of biophilic design is an environment that contributes to an individual's well-being. The biophilic design utilizes direct, indirect, and space natural elements. Some of the space elements used in creating a natural environment in biophilia are visual and non-visual connection with nature, the presence of water, such as a small water body or fountain, airflow, and thermal variability, non-rhythmic sensory stimuli, and cultural/ecological attachment. In addition, biophilia uses biomorphic patterns, a sense of refuge, a balance between simple and complicated forms, a sense of risk/peril, complexity, order, and mystery as direct and indirect elements to ultimately enable the individual to connect to nature.
