Asset management executive Thomas “Tom” Finke is involved with influential cultural institutions in Charlotte, North Carolina. Thomas Finke is a a board advisor for the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. Founded by the Bechtler family in 2010, the museum curates a 20,000 piece collection featuring some of the most important artists of the modernist period. Its permanent collection includes work by Barbara Hepworth, a sculpture best known for her direct carving technique. Born in Yorkshire, Hepworth attended the Royal College of Art in London and spent much of her youth traveling around Europe and studying art. During a three-month stay in Italy, she studied under the direction of master sculptor Giovanni Ardini. She eventually settled on the coastal town of St. Ives, England, where she produced her abstract yet intimate sculptures. Hepworth’s pieces have been displayed at art galleries across the world, including a retrospective show at the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Netherlands. Several years after her death, the Tate Museum established the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden in her adopted home of St. Ives.
